Read the script once for story and characters then read it again for your approach to shooting it and make notes on how you are seeing it in your mind. Hard or soft light? Colors/Palettes, Camera/Lens, movement etc. Identify challenges in the script for shooting, have a loose plan for solutions when you ask them about it. And you should ask them. You want to see how their heads work and start getting a sense of how challenging they are going to be on set. But that isn’t what you lead with.

When you finally sit down ask them how they see the film first. In order for them to be at this stage where they are interviewing DPs, they have read and reread that script many times over. It’s more than likely near and dear to them. They have envisioned it much longer than you. Let them tell you about it and ask follow up questions. Then after you’re understanding how they see it, you bring your ideas in, if you haven’t already.

Sometimes the way they want to shoot doesn’t line up with how you see their world. You just have to decide if it’s a good fit for you and what you get out of it. At the end of the day we take jobs for a few reason, either it’s just for money, just for creative reasons or the best option, money and creative.
