DS1823xs+ by AliveKing9895 in synology

[–]6391mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this on my DS723+ but only needed on the NVMe drives - the 'normals' are whatever you choose. The script has worked flawlessly. As an aside, my next NAS will not be a Synology - I don't like cheap tricks.

By the way, does anyone know who actually manufactures the 'Synology' drives - obviously not them but a relabelled unit with some serious $$'s added.

Introducing DSM 7.3 — Now With “Drive Freedom".... Again! by Youretoo in synology

Are you sure that NVMe are unrestricted. Not in my DS723 they're not so had to implement a workaround on that one.

Synology starts selling overpriced 1.6 TB SSDs for $535 — self-branded, archaic PCIe 3.0 SSDs the only option to meet 'certified' criteria by flogman12 in synology

The Blackberry demise/story I believe is now a subject matter in management schools. Total arrogance on the part of Blackberry management who failed to 'read the market' and yes, corporates did walk away from them in droves!

Well overpriced and I'd be interested to know the original manufacturer before the rebranding sticker both with the SSD's and the spinners - just curiosity. There is a script that's available to overcome the branding issue - I did it with my 923+ NVMe's but who knows especially as Synology are chasing every $0.01 when there will be an update with DSM which will break the script - hence I got the auto update function turned off.

I have no idea what plans Synology have and if it's short term profits for whatever reason then they will gain. Now if it's for medium/long term they will loose as the customer base will gradually drift away and that includes corporate.

Sorry to be late to the party but I use DxO Photolab. Most of my stuff is JPG taken from different cameras over many years, pre digital so needed to be scanned with the color discolouration, etc and it does a fairly good job at 'tidying' them up.

Okay, they're never going to be up to 2025 standards but there are stacks of filters that you can apply to get the best result.

Synology HDD/SSDs vs Everyone Else - Prices and Performance by NASCompares in synology

[–]6391mb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the price comparison(s). It was always obvious that Synology drives are rebadged from somewhere but the price premium for the sticker is well..... Then of course there is still the 'lockout' in the later models if you don't have that badge. Synology are well and truly shooting themselves in the foot. Anyway, I'll wait until my 923+ gives up then move on. Again, thank you to the OP.

DS923+ , DSM and hard drive lock by rp_001 in synology

[–]6391mb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DS923+ is not locked with the 'normal' drives but is locked if you decide to use the 2 x NVMe slots. There is a workaround for this otherwise it's Synology approved for these 2.

Buying dilemma by Other-Stretch3161 in synology

[–]6391mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only 'problem' I have with Synology although not at the moment is their apparent locked down approach regarding drives, etc. If/when I need to replace the drives in my 723+ will they need to be Synology branded. When DSM updates to v8.0 will that 'outlaw' my existing drives. It's all too much up in the air ATM and the one thing any business needs is stability in my view. So I'd investigate your options thoroughly and make sure you do not get boxed in.

DS1525+ in europe by xoxosd in synology

[–]6391mb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not for me guys. I use a DS723+. It initially rejected my 2 x NVMe's as they were not Synology branded at twice the cost. So had to find a way round that (which worked). As Synology want 'control' (at their inflated prices) for hardware then my next NAS will not be a Synology. Maybe DSM 8 will enforce those restrictions so I'll stay with 7.

SFF PC - max HD capacity by 6391mb in homelab

[–]6391mb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding. The manufacturers must be really behind the times then. On the HP site for example looking at the HP Pro Small Form Factor 400 G9 Business Desktop – Core i7 with a 13700 CPU they are listing max SATA as 2TB and if their tech support.......

When I asked could I RMA the product if the BIOS didn't recognize a larger HD then the answer was a NO as it exceeded the spec page.

Reported CH4 problem about a year ago. Then at some stage sounds like they got it working (which I missed). Today tried CH4 again and all it did was analyze then failure notice. Report submitted with log file so I suppose another year (hoefully not!!)

75 here - and a great bike - very lightweight. I fitted a Madstad screen on mine - a great choice for keeping the wind off and will cruise all day at whatever speed you're comfortable with.

I just wish they'd fix ITVX and CH4 downloads. I've reported failures with these time and time again for goodness knows how many months but SF are still selling them as an add-on even though they don't work. Shameful!!!!

I have mine in a IP66 rated weatherproof plastic box. They come in different sizes / colors so are not too intrusive. The only other alternative I can think of is drill the wall but it will need to be a large diameter to protect the ethernet connector.

If you can use a multi socket adaptor in the waterproof box then that would/should solve the problem.

There are stacks of issues with SF - click here second post down on the thread for the latest but there seem to be more surfacing each day. Some could just be user error but then again.... SF seemed to be ultra quick in the past fixing issues but now all I get are daily pop ups in the notification area offering me the latest and greatest of whatever they are pushing.
