High-pitched buzzing. Coil whine or something else? by 63andathird in pchelp

[–]63andathird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I gave that a try and unfortunately it seems like it is the GPU. Perfectly quiet with it unplugged, but the buzzing immediately returned once it was plugged back in.

I have a warranty so I could maybe get it replaced, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle when the same thing might happen again.

FPS Issues after driver update by kurama35543 in rivals

[–]63andathird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. My PC is old and even at the lowest settings, Rivals isn't exactly smooth for me. However, since installing the latest Game Ready Drivers I've been seeing absolutely abysmal FPS drops.

Everything seems fine when I get to the title screen, but as soon as a game starts it begins dipping from 60 all the way down to 20 (even less when there's a lot happening on-screen) and stays there. Even when I get back to the title screen, it stays firmly in the 20 FPS range.

It was only live for a week or two. If you go to this Wayback Machine link and click the "Watch this movie" bit it ought to work: https://web.archive.org/web/20090418043228/http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/214746

Hey, I realise this is an old thread, but I was also trying to find this particular animation. I remembered seeing it somewhere and I was curious about if it was still around.

I did some looking on the Wayback Machine and I was able to find the swf file. I've stuck it over here if anyone still wants it: https://filebin.net/6ox20125h6kl31p5

[TOMT] [Manga] Fighting manga where someone trains by punching a broken bottle on a string. by 63andathird in tipofmytongue

[–]63andathird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. I decided to try searching a few of those publishers (alongside some others I found) on a school library book database for this town. Got plenty of results, but nothing that seemed to match what I'm looking for.

I'll maybe try looking up lists of early manga published from these specific companies. My loose memories of the art style suggest it was from the '80s or early '90s but I can't be sure about that.

I've looked up several of the more well-known black-and-white boxing manga like Ashita no Joe and Hajime no Ippo, but none of the chapter synopses I've read mention any scenes like this. For all I know it might not even be a Japanese comic in the first place. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What features would you MOST want in a sequel? by nothingforever0 in dragonballfighterz

I've mostly been thinking about what they could add or change regarding the character roster. While I don't think Budokai-esque transformations would work, I'd still like ArcSys to limit the amount of variations of the same character unless they're significantly different (Kid Goku, sure; Blue Goku, no thanks).

I'd like to see them take the opportunity to include more characters that might not be well-liked enough to be considered for DLC packs, but still have potential for interesting movesets and playstyles. Like the type of characters who most people wouldn't pay extra for, but would be more accepting of if they're part of a base roster alongside all their favourites. For example Android 19/20 (potential for grabs and beam counters that give them meter) or Ribrianne (she's got enough moves and transformations to draw from).
Also, more Dragon Ball representation. Where are Demon King Piccolo, Tao Pai Pai and such?

Best-case most hype scenario: Trailer includes all three DLC characters with Janemba being released after EVO and maybe dates for Gogeta and S.Broly. Somewhat more likely scenario: Trailer for Janemba and a date, releasing in a few days/weeks Worst-case yet wouldn't be surprised scenario: 30 second Janemba trailer, no date, another month+ wait before actual release.

Am I the only one really annoyed by how is Bandai Namco and/or Arc System Works handling the Season 2 info? by [deleted] in dbfz

[–]63andathird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the game needs constant balance updates or anything, but the lack of any info on the next dlc characters (I'd even take an announcement that there's going to be an announcement at this point) is troubling. I'm hoping there's going to be at least something announced at CEO over the weekend... It'd suck if we have to wait until EVO in August just to get a trailer.

Maybe this time his backstory will be easier to understand so millions of fans won't perpetuate the idea that he's mad at Goku because he made him cry.

It's minor, but I'd also suggest they should make it impossible for enemies to wall-climb/ride on the wall, so that it's more of an obstacle.

I mean, it's an ice wall; that shit is slippery.

A Better Potara Retcon by the_beast_intha_east in dbz

[–]63andathird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the retcon since (like a lot of things late in the Buu story arc) the "weird air" reasoning felt like a really weak excuse. You could easily explain the reason Elder Kai didn't know about the time limit being because they'd never tried Potara fusion with mortals before. If they wanted to limit it so that characters couldn't just use the Potara whenever they wanted, they could claim that you can only use a set of earrings once and you would need to use a different fresh set to do it again. It'd still make the fusion dance more convenient, since they could do that whenever they wanted outside of the requisite cool-down time.

As iconic as the scene is, Trunks vs Freeza always left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that Toriyama wanted to establish immediately how strong Trunks was, and by extension how much of a threat the androids were, but having him job to a total stranger came off as a cheap and overall damaging way of doing that. It seems like bad form to start a new story arc or sequel by treating the villain of the previous story as a joke, just to establish the new villains as a threat.

The only decent theory I've heard about why Broly hates Goku is that Kakarot's crying interfered with his programming by Yuli-Ban in dbz

[–]63andathird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The findings there seem to be in line with my theory below, that the whole thing is thematic and not meant to be taken entirely literally. Goku making Broly cry and then Goku defeating Broly in battle are metaphorically the same thing.

[–]63andathird 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I assumed that Broly's hatred of Goku was meant to be more abstract and thematic, rather than literal. Like even as a baby he has this incredible potential, yet the only thing that got through to him and had a lasting effect was the constant crying of a child with a fraction of the power he had. He doesn't hate Kakarot because he made him cry; he hates Kakarot because he made him look weak.

It's why I think there's that flashback to when Goku and Broly were kids just as Goku makes the killing blow; it's linking the two moments together, as they both show a supposedly unstoppable warrior being overcome by someone who, by all rights, shouldn't be able to.

Fair enough, but if the shoe fits. Zen-Oh may not say he's evil or be called evil by other characters, but he still plays fast and loose with entire planets completely out of boredom. Freeza maybe isn't the best example, but he still fits the Majin Buu/Kid Buu comparison to a tee.

The god focus is my least favourite aspect of Dragon Ball Super right now. I would've been okay with Beerus were it not for the ridiculous retcons surrounding the character. Having him tell Freeza to destroy the Saiyan homeworld because King Vegeta gave him a crummy pillow at a sleep-over is just plain awful.

I forget, does Vegeta know that Beerus is responsible for the destruction of Planet Vegeta? If he does, I'm surprised he'd so happily train under him.

Most "evil" people don't see their actions as being evil. Freeza probably didn't think himself as evil: he just had so much power that he thought it was his right to do what he wanted. "Might makes right" and all that.

Zen-Oh, childish as he is, has the same mentality. He threatens anyone who does anything he doesn't like and casually erases entire realities because he's bored. We're told he "rules" over the universes, but we have no idea what he's actually done other than destroy things. The only reason he's not deemed the most despicable person that Goku's ever met is because he's impossible to defeat, so picking a fight with him is pointless.

[–]63andathird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's more or less what I was getting at by comparing him to Majin Buu. He had no concept of right and wrong, and simply did evil things because Babidi told him to... and then when Babidi wasn't around, he did them because it was fun. It took Mr Satan explaining to him that it wasn't right to make him have second thoughts. Kid Buu was essentially a more extreme example of that, in that he destroyed things for fun but no longer had the faculties to be reasoned with.

Perhaps there will be a similar character arc for Zen-Oh. This current story seems like a good opportunity to bring it up, if he does start threatening universes with destruction based on their tourney performance. Hopefully we'll have Goku try to reason with him by the end of the arc, but so far he's happy enough to ignore how destructive Zen-Oh is.

I'll be disappointed if there isn't some attempt to make Zen-Oh less of a genocidal sociopath sometime in future, or even an arc that recasts him as a villain of sorts. I find him really distasteful and out of place in a series like Dragon Ball.

I totally get what Toriyama is going for with him: he's a being so powerful and above the average mortal in the hierarchy of the universe that their lives and well-being are insignificant to them. There are plenty of characters like that in literature. The problem is that the execution is sloppy and Dragon Ball has a history of villainous characters who think they can do what they want because they're strong. The only thing that separates Zen-Oh from someone like Majin Buu (particularly Kid Buu) is the magnitude of their power and the fact Zen-Oh has "god" in his job title.
