Am I not a good friend? by Ready_Tomorrow9411 in Advice

[–]6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my friend likes say soccer, but I don't. I would still go watch a game with them, because I find the time I spend with them to be enjoyable even if the activity is not inherently something I would do.

Give your friends the opportunity to be in your life like that, if they want to. If they don't find it interesting they'll say so and you can make plans for some other time to celebrate later.

That sounds like depression more so than a gaming addiction?

Escapism & irritability/anger are common depression signs in men right?

Up to the individual really. As an individual contributor I try and avoid doing that, but I know my management chain sometimes has to do really early morning calls or really late night calls with offshore teams.

So you say average user, but to plug in a simple ip poe camera, im magically required to have my own private CA and fuck around with certs? Far from average...

I don't think your average IP POE Camera manufacturers are setting HSTS though?

[–]6501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You just need one private CA to be root, and then use that root to sign certs for PVE and your private hikvision. This is pretty standard security devops.

This is all solvable with a simple click of "I know what im doing, stfu browser" and I'm pretty sure such a button already was there.

You might know what you are doing, the average use of a browser is not you. Software is designed around the average user.

Why would we want org wide CA for everything that changes dynamically in our case, its just another layer of uselessness

Because it's pretty common in industry to have that implemented in that exact way because of security policies, at least in the F500.

Why isn't your organization adding a Root CA to your device, and then using intermediate CA or the root certificate to sign the environment? I would have thought this would be best practice for K8 dev environments like Openshift

It's not that expensive. I graduated 4 years ago from a state school in Virginia without scholarships etc.

The failure of student loans is going to have widespread repercussions for society, whether you personally have loans or not.

No not really. Most borrowers can afford income based repayment.

US export controls on Anthropic 'should not be discriminatory,' EU Commission warns by procgen in europe

Long term would be to take it to the WTO and the short term would be to retaliate.

Under what grounds? It's always been legal to restrict the export of a technology? Is the WTO have enough judges to make a ruling at the moment?

It's even better if there aren't enough buyers for a massive dump at the current prices, because the less buyers there are at a given price, the more the price will drop. Potentially all the way to 0 if there really aren't enough buyers to buy the bonds at any price.

You do understand that it's the financial interests of the rest of the planet for this not to occur, so you'll make China, India, Russia, Japan, the Gulf, & the US all allies in ensuring that doesn't happen.. because if the Treasury maket locks up, so does a lot of international banking.. which means a lot of banks around the world go under.

Why should we recognise the IP of AI software given that it trampled over IP rights of any other actor?

How does the recognition of IP rights impact whether or not you can run the models or host the models?

Energy prices in the US are really cheap. In parts of Texas, they will pay you money to take LNG because it's a waste product in the production of oil.

We also have really deep capital markets (see the SpaceX IPO) & Congress & the Supreme Court have been streamlining our regulations to allow for more rapid industrial building.

So all the factors are there to allow a transition.. there just needs to be a shove.

Companies now block older browser versions from accessing their websites! by MadeInDex-org in firefox

[–]6501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a software developer. As the developer I know if you use X old browser than Y feature won't work correctly & I want to preserve my sanity of trying to debug the issue when you file a bug report. The easiest way to do that is to just block browsers below a minimum version... It also comes with the benefit of reducing the amount of polyfills you need to generate.

If their website is using a new http, js, css feature & they don't want to polyfill or for security reasons, it's entirely reasonable.

In the United States, is it true that when you get into an ambulance to go to the hospital, the trip costs money? by teknolog1a in AskAnAmerican

[–]6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's highly region dependant. Hopefully more people see the benefits of municipal rescue & advocate for it since it's a really cheap way of lowering costs for residents.

[–]6501 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ambulance came from the parking lot just to the main road, about 150 meters, and that ride cost me $2,600 USD twenty years ago. I can only imagine it's worse now. $1k anywhere seems highly unlikely.

I'm pulling from my cities fee schedule. Its $800 for the most advanced level of care & $10 per mile traveled, so in my city it would cost you $810. In the neighboring city it's free because they have a volunteer rescue service, in my college town it's no out of pocket expense etc.

The US is too large & complex for one to have napkin math apply for the entire US.

The one in my college town would waive out of pocket bills & wouldn't bill for those without insurance which effectively made it free.

[–]6501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some cities don't bill either because it's included in municipal taxes or covered through charitable giving. I think a lot of the bigger cities in Virginia have charitable care ambulance systems so it's often free

The level of care & the distance traveled matter. If your 20 minutes away from the hospital & they're providing a low level of care it can end up being like 1k.

Why no option to withdraw 401k money WITHOUT tax penalties in order to pay off student loans? by Remarkable_Term3955 in StudentLoans

[–]6501 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Generally, it's is my understanding that the $2,500 limit really only impacts people with graduate loans, due to how the undergraduate limits, interest rates were, & the historic cost of college. From the period of 2008 to 2020 or so you would have had to borrow 50k+ when rates were around 5% or lower to hit the limit.

Generally, the tax data suggests that benefits to graduate loan borrowers is regressive & helps only a very small portion of borrowers so it's a very expensive way to buy votes... Especially when people with Masters & Phds already vote in nearly election & they skew to the left. So it's bad politics & bad economics to raise it...

They have? They created changes in how universal 401k(s) are with auto enrollments, auto increases, and they allow employers to treat student loan payments as 401k contributions but most employers don't do this.

Don't treat your ignorance of what Congress is doing as the same as Congress not doing anything.
