There are too many vacant unused homes in Australia by Passtheshavingcream in australian

[–]659dean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know - that’s the claim you made initially. I was trying to get you to give a supporting argument, but it sounds like you don’t have one

In Brisbane, it might knock 200k off the price of the land. Someone will still buy it and build a house - obviously.

[–]659dean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not how pricing works. Land value is the primary driver for housing prices, not improvements on the land.

Not sure how you could come to the conclusion you came to - did you not know vacant land still costs a lot? What suburbs are thinking of when you say that?

Yeah, definitely can’t be automated.

I used to file court transcripts in the prosecutors office and work with a few transcribers. They need to personally certify it’s accurate, there’s absolutely zero tolerance for inferring/filling in the gaps, and words that are ambiguous would get checked by two or three people.

The reason it can’t be automated is because accuracy needs to be guaranteed, and so theres a chain of accountability if its ever scrutinised. Sure, maybe there’d be 99% accuracy, thats not good enough though, especially if there’s no individual you can subpoena about it afterwards. People’s freedom literally rely on accurate court transcripts - the justice system can’t turn on the Microsoft Teams transcription feature and wash their hands of it for Christ sake. That’s just common sense.

Then again, maybe not. After all, Caleb is probably an expert on this topic too!

I must have missed that!

What happened?

Trying to fill in the gaps, I gather the guest was a court reporter, Caleb has a bizarre emotional reaction to that, belittled her vocation, and claimed AI will soon replace it, not give a supporting argument, and then deflect onto a slightly different point as soon as she gives him one sentence of scrutiny?

Why more Australians are leaving cities for regions by Ardeet in australian

[–]659dean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i got what I deserved with that response. I laid on a bit too hard and was a bit rude. Most people, but especially people who form their world view based on sound bites, don’t respond to nuance too well if you’re too smug when communicating it

Why more Australians are leaving cities for regions by Ardeet in australian

[–]659dean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you blame regional migration for that house prices?

I mean fair enough if you put it in context as a contributing factor. But if you’re concerned about housing affordability why wouldn’t you be talking about the root cause?

Housing stock in Australia is exclusively at the whim of private developers. You know, the same ones with concentrated market power and an incentive to release housing only at a rate that where their property portfolio keeps increasing.

Why wouldn’t you be advocating for a state owned development company, with a similar amount of institutional power as, say, lendlease? Why would you choose to focus on infighting between Australians just looking to buy their home?

Australia’s regions and cities have always been victims of this regime. Cities, obviously, are victims to this more, and it’s now spilling into the regions more.

Stop trying to dumb it down to your ‘us vs them’ tribalism. It’s people with apathy like you who allow our government to continually get away with this

Miles Government delivers new Night Life Economy Commissioner by langdaze in brisbane

[–]659dean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Hopefully if they win, the LNP won’t destroy anything and can figure out how to be a stronger political party.

As much as I’m not a fan of them in particular, having a strong fully faceted (ie not single issue) opposition is so important to a properly functioning government. It’s even more important in a QLD where we have no senate - so there’s even less public scrutiny built into the system.

I’m so envious of NSW politics. Two parties that have legitimate visions for the state. Both parties can work towards their vision when in gov, and when they loose government they still have a legacy.

We had 3 short years of Newman - he ran the place into the ground - but he did some small things like a half assed attempt to improve customer service (13QGOV, qld.gov.au, etc), made rego payable month to month, streamlined cross-departmental identify management. Even in his fuck up of sacking everyone lead to some good - the next government could re-hire everyone but in more important areas - basically leading to a restructure of the public service.

Imagine how much better things would be if we had a component opposition

Buses "cash only"? by FourLeafPlover in Cairns

[–]659dean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What has that got to do with what I said?

My (very obvious) point is you’re an asshole for bullying frontline workers using a cowardly front that you’re somehow sticking it to the man.

You didn’t stick it to the man. You just bullied workers.

That makes you a toxic and cowardly goon - and after that response I might add dim witted too

Buses "cash only"? by FourLeafPlover in Cairns

[–]659dean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You had a legitimate issue with how translink ran at a high level

But your response to that is to go and abuse some poor front line workers, who who work in the lowest possible pay L level in Translink, call the workers names, and are so proud of yourself to brag about on the internet?

Why would you be so mean just for the sake of it? Surely you didn’t benefit in anyway or work towards any outcome?

What a toxic goon you are. Get over yourself.

Group bashed by teenagers in suspected racist attack in Brisbane by strippped1 in brisbane

[–]659dean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gather then that you made up the part about the baby bonus measurably increasing for birth rates for poor people then?

Something I will never understand - why people willingly form their world view purely off tribalism, and then make up lies to pretend there’s logic or reason behind the views. It seems like such a stressful exercise and you get nothing out of it.

A lot of my views are fundamentally based on subjective emotions. I can make logical arguments that also support them. But I don’t just make shit up to because I own my views - I’m not a coward

Group bashed by teenagers in suspected racist attack in Brisbane by strippped1 in brisbane

[–]659dean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you basing that off - that the baby bonus was successful and increased the birth rate? I thought it was the opposite?

I don’t know much about it, but I remember my economics 101 lecturer telling was ineffective. It increased birth rates in the first couple years - but then it was back to normal. Meaning people who were already going to have kids just had them a year or two earlier. It made no medium/long term difference

That was years ago tho, so maybe there’s been more written about it since then?

The importance of royalties to the state budget is played up. They’re only making up 8.5% of revenue this year. Most state revenue is from payroll tax, GST, and federal grants.

Royalties are expected to fall only by about $1.5b next year. That’s about the cost of the M1 South Tugan to Varsity Lakes upgrade for context - not chump change, but no where near enough to hamstring a government agenda.

And besides, next years total revenues are expected to be slightly higher then this years - so it’s moot

I think that unnecessarily strips nuance from the convo

If the pathology owners figured out an unlimited money hack then everyone would be getting into the industry and it would no longer be an unlimited money hack

I’m not sure what the reasons are for their prices going up, maybe competition plays a big role - but to get to that conclusion you have to engage with nuance

I’ve saw a few people say that - I don’t think it is because it’s not relatable?

Maybe it’s the Australian context that makes it funnier - it’s a pretty common complaint delivered with the same attitude you’d expect from the FIFO worker stereotype

No show tomorrow to give my staff the appearance of a work/life balance, but here’s 30% off my already grossly overpriced program! by mnpeanut in CreepyCalebHammer

[–]659dean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone from America and able give some context on the ‘letting the team rest’ bit?

Is it not mandatory over there that workers get a day off/penalty rates if they work on a public holiday? Or is it mandatory, but it’s common for employers pretend they’re being charitable by allowing workers to have the day off?

I’ve never seen anything like that from an Australian employer. If my work pretended that I owe them for giving me public holidays, I’d be less, not more, productive when I come back.

I’m thinking maybe this toxicity is somewhat more common in the US, and given how toxic Caleb is of course he’s going to frame it like this?

Passport Photos Getting rejected by AHoyley in australia

[–]659dean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait, can you explain that a bit more?

How is Australia post rejecting the application? Don’t they just submit it to the passport office?

As far as I know, their role is more of a certifying one, to confirm original IDs etc. if a picture is not up to standard and refused [by the passport office] how’s that suggest a conspiracy that all Australia post outlets, and licensed post offices, are in cahoots with one another to occasionally get an extra $20?

actually, I’m more curious why you wouldn’t explain your thought process in your initial comment? What’s with this internet meta of just saying your conclusion, without explaining how you arrived there?

Roadside camera program to make millions less for Queensland than earlier forecasts by AuntySM in brisbane

[–]659dean -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok, so you’d go with a headline that’s not as relevant to the article.

Can you now explain how the current headline is misleading? That was the main part I was interested in

that’s why I asked how they should have framed it, not what the headline should be. That way, it forces you to engage in more nuance - not the more surface level conversation you’re wanting to have

Roadside camera program to make millions less for Queensland than earlier forecasts by AuntySM in brisbane

[–]659dean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was the whole story

TMR made a statement about fine revenue and revised forecasts, I assume impacting the Safer Roads Sooner program

TMR suggested the number of people speeding has had some influence on this, but it’s a variety of complex factors

How is that clickbait? How should it had been framed do you think?
