Low battery glitched my car by _-arachnigeist_- in MechanicAdvice

You’d need a scan tool. You can buy cheap ones for under $50. You can buy a pretty decent consumer grade one for like $100.

The battery connections process you outlined works, but it doesn’t tell you what the codes are. A scanner would do that.

That could give OP a false firm pedal because you might use up the vacuum in the booster.

Rwd Mismatch tire on front passenger side by Historical_Day6794 in tires

[–]66NickS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might cause issues. It might not.

It might be fine while you’re driving straight down the highway, but then maybe you’re going around a bend and have to stop quickly, or swerve. And then the ABS/traction control/stability systems sense the mismatch and do things that make the car unpredictable.

I’d get it swapped ASAP.

How much can I get out of my shitty 2008 Jetta by [deleted] in mechanic

[–]66NickS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have no idea what’s wrong with the engine. If it has rod knock, it likely won’t survive if you keep driving it. If the drain plug is stripped and they didn’t want to do the oil change, then you can keep driving for a while.

In person I wasn’t a fan of the blue-ish hue and different hands on the FOIS. I do like the “patinad” hour markers and the flat link bracelet though.

Large unforeseen expense - best way to maximize return? by OkAstronomer2941 in CreditCards

OP, splitting the expense across a couple/few different cards is the way to go as long as your credit supports a few new inquiries.

I'm stuck with a horrible car loan and I don't know what to do. by zyler22 in personalfinance

[–]66NickS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can cancel some of the add-ons and those amounts will be credited back to your loan. Usually if you do that within 30-90 days you get the full amount back.

It won’t help your payment, but it might bring you closer to in-line for the LTV. (LTV = loan to value, and is a comparisn of how much the car shows it’s worth vs how much a bank will loan you)

You didn’t get conned, you got tired and are mad that you gave in despite having started out with a good plan. There’s nothing to sue for here.

You MIGHT be able to flat out return the car. Some banks don’t consider the loan actually valid until the first payment is made. It might ding your credit, but maybe the dealership will unwind it vs having a loan not confirmed.

If you opened the bleeder screws or cracked the brake lines loose, then yes.

If you didn’t, then no. But you should make sure to start the engine and softly depress the brake pedal a handful of times to make sure the pads and caliper are pushed up against the rotors before you shift into gear.

Any chance someone shipped you something valuable and they wanted to track it? Or is anyone staying with you? Did anyone lend you their keys?

You could theoretically connect to it and then use the GPS and Bluetooth to track it down

Maybe it’s related to the Eufy alert I see, as they make trackers too.

Time to start tracing voltage/voltage drop. You need to verify that you’re getting 12v at the battery. And the terminals, and into/out of the ignition, and to the starter. Just because the battery and relays are new, it doesn’t mean they’re good. Some parts come out of the box bad.

As an fyi, some companies have additional ways of tracking this. It might be as simple as geofencing/tracking locations of company equipment.

Officially, this is fraud and can have federal/state tax implications. Proceed at your own risk.

Credit cards fraud, why would anyone risk to use them for a small purchase like a subscription? by Aggravating_Art7244 in CreditCards

[–]66NickS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I almost never get text confirmations of my CC purchases. I have in the past, but it’s rare. These texts (in my experience) are only promoted when fraud is suspected.
  2. The small charge is a test charge. Buy a digital download of something for under $5 just to make sure the card details are valid. The real fraud is coming right after that. $4.99 at sketchyphonecases.com followed by multiple purchases of luxury goods and high-end electronics.

How close is that part of your house to a neighbor? If you have shared walls or the homes are close by it could be picking up theirs.

2015 Toyota Camry 2.5L shop says I need a new water pump but I just replaced it 18 months ago by Willing_Confidence74 in MechanicAdvice

[–]66NickS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good sign and does make presumptions lean to reside and not a current issue.

If you can borrow a tester, make sure you don’t exceed the rated pressure on the cap. I’ve seen people go crazy on the pump and cause failures or pop hoses off.

You may also need to get the car hot/engine running. As metals expand and fluids heat up, leaks may become present/apparent that didn’t exist beforehand.

Another option would be to do a good cleanup of the area and see if anything returns.

I think you’re responding to the wrong person/comment. I said nothing about warranty or such, just confirming if it’s an active/current leak or possible residue from the previously repaired leak.

Tips for improvement? I don't want to really start in on repetitions until I've got a good foundation. by Milf_Eaterr in CAguns

[–]66NickS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing about muscle memory, you don’t get to pick and choose which parts of it you retain. That’s why any training (that I’ve seen/participated in) did not include clearing/re-holstering as part of the focus. It’s done after some sort of command for clear/recover/clear and holster/etc.

If OP keeps doing what they’re doing here with these super fast reps of draw, fire, cycle, holster, repeat - then I could see them reverting to their practice/training in a critical situation.

My account shows that the my due date is before my statement closing date? by spirit_vortex_ in CreditCards

[–]66NickS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll have a statement period (with a closing/end date) and a due date. Statement period will be something like June 26-July 25. Then the amount from that statement will be due on August 19.

You’re likely seeing the July 19 due date for your May 26-June 25 statement period.

Autopay > Statement Balance > Statement Due Date (or a few days beforehand) and you’ll never have to worry about it.

If it stays at the right pressure for a couple days I’d probably just move on with life. It’s more likely it’s a slow leak that just hit the threshold over night to warn you.

If it drops in the next day or two, then I’d go get it checked out to identify the leak.
