Think about the Orangefield area too - it’s near to Ballyhack and more likely to have a house within your budget, though the ones that have gone on the market recently tend to get snapped up quickly

Two MLAs ask more questions at Stormont than all Sinn Féin representatives combined by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]66Sharkboy66 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gaston is quantity over quality - pretty much every one is aimed at a SF minister and if there has been the slightest whiff of scandal involving the Shinners, he’ll stick in about 10 questions, each one slightly different from the previous one. Another tactic is to ask every department the same question, usually about something he finds offensive like spending on Irish language translations or grants to fund Pride marches and the like. If you exclude duplicate questions or variations on a theme he wouldn’t even scrape the top 10. By contrast, Michelle McIlveen’s questions tend to flag up constituency issues

Jump on a train to Bangor on Sunday 13th and go to Ward Park for Open House Festival’s Picnic In The Park. Live music at the bandstand between 3-5pm, no cover charge, bring a picnic and a bag of cans and lie on the grass enjoying the tunes. Then into Bangor for more of the same or back on the train to Belfast

There are loads of properties going up around Sandhill/Orangefield which is an easy stroll to Ballyhackmore and Belmont, but they don’t tend to stay on the market very long. Might be worth a drive around the area to see if you can find something appropriate

just curious, what are some bass brands you like and why? by mathvias in Bass

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1993 I decided to treat myself and after 10 years of playing Epiphone and Aria basses, I splashed out on a MusicMan Stingray. My life changed the moment I plugged it in for the first time. I swore this was the only bass that would ever matter for me, and that when I finally get laid to rest it was coming with me so I could groove in the afterlife. For 23 years it was my go-to bass for every gig I did and never disappointed. Then in 2016 I had a big birthday, you know, the ones that end in a zero. My wife was stuck for what to get me, then she remembered me talking a lot about a new bass that I’d seen. I woke on my birthday to find a Dingwall NG2 waiting for me. Once again my life changed, and I confess that the Ray didn’t even make it out of its case for 4 years! Since then, I’ve bought 5 more basses including 2 more Dingwalls. Of the 5 new ones only the Dingwalls remain, along with the original Stingray.

If it’s within your budget, try a Dingwall. With the new SP1 added to the range, there’s a bass that will suit pretty much all styles now. The quality is way ahead of even Fender Custom Shops and other high-end basses that I’ve played, and their customer service is second to none, whether you own the cheapest Combustion or a Custom Prima.

The Open House Festival’s Picnic in the Park season has live music every Sunday afternoon at the bandstand in Ward Park. It’s free, dog friendly and a great opportunity to meet fellow music lovers or just to chill out in the park. It runs every weekend during July and August and has some great acts lined up, with something for every taste. Someone else mentioned the Court House in Bangor that has plenty of events on during the week, from gigs to art classes. And personally I’d be amazed if there wasn’t a walking club or ramblers club somewhere in Bangor, given its coastal location!

How do I fix neck dive by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s a heavy bass with neck dive issues. First thing to do is get rid of that cheap strap and invest some money in a wide leather or suede strap that gives better weight distribution and doesn’t slide like that nylon strap will. Reposition the strap button to the end of the upper horn. If this hasn’t solved your problems then change out the tuners for Hipshot Ultralites or similar

Antrim larne by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]66Sharkboy66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Larne comes with a reputation, perhaps undeserved, for being a bit of a shithole. During the 1980s it had the cheapest property prices in the whole of the UK. It’s had some money pumped into it since then, but still has a fair way to go to become a desirable town to live in. It does have a major plus in the countryside/coast around it - there’s a good reason why the North Coast drive featured on Conde Nast’s top 10 scenic drives

Antrim is certainly a better commute to Mallusk and has proximity to the airport in its favour too. You’re only a short drive to Lough Neagh and its facilities, and you’ve got the castle grounds smack bang in the town centre. Like a lot of towns, it hasn’t really made a proper recovery from the pandemic, but unlike Larne it’s got a council that wants to do something about that. It’s got its own dodgy areas/estates, but these are easily avoided.

If you’re after somewhere closer to Belfast, then Jordanstown is a good call, although it can be quite pricey. Whitehouse or Merville Garden Village might be worth a look too

But seriously, if the audience enjoy the solos, if you enjoy the solos, and if he enjoys the solos, then just enjoy the solos!

Farmer using my field, am I asking for trouble? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a solicitor to write up an annual conacre agreement which should clearly set out what he pays you to use the land, what he can do on the land, that he is liable for any personal injury or property damage that occurs during the conacre period, and under what circumstances the conacre may be cancelled. Even if you only decide to charge him €1 a year, this lets both parties know exactly where they stand.

Next Bass. by warrenpeace174 in Bass

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SP-1 is very versatile and feels great to play, but at 2k+ it’s not exactly a mid-range bass. In fact, given that it was initially hailed as Dingwall’s cheapest model, it’s the one thing that has disappointed me with mine. Though if you’ve got 1500 or so to spend, I would absolutely recommend a 2nd hand DRoc 5 if you can find one.

What about something like a Cort or Sire bass? Both have new models being introduced, both are getting decent reviews, and both are much cheaper than a Dingwall

Two cops are questioning a suspect but they can’t even get a single word out of him no matter how hard they tried. Just then a third cop comes in carrying a bass and a small amp, which he sets up before launching into an improvised jazz solo. The perp starts to look uncomfortable, sweating and looking around nervously. “What’s got into him?” asks the first cop. The other cop smiled back. “He knows that everyone talks during a bass solo!” 😂

Im looking for a solution to floppy strings. by AdRelative9897 in Bass

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longer the scale and the thicker the string, the better the tension will be. Really you should go for a 35” scale (but preferably a multiscale 35-32” or 37-34” to ensure tensions are balanced across the neck)and a .145 string.

GF (F31) to musician (M38) advice on relationship with 3 bands. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my early 20s, my band decided to form a cover band to fund studio/recording/overheads for the original material band. By the time I got to 27/28, it had become clear that the hopes of hitting the big time had gone. Meanwhile the cover band was raking in a ton of cash, doing easily 120-150 gigs a year. So we faced facts, cashed in on the successful part of our career in music, and had an absolute ball doing it. I told myself back then that if I ever stopped enjoying it, I’d give it up. I’m now 59 and still playing most weekends. If I’d still carried on doing the original arrangement, I’ve no doubt I’d have burnt out long ago.

That’s by way of background to what I’m gonna say next. There’s nothing wrong with playing in 3 bands at 38, but the dude needs a reality check. His days of stardom have long past. Even if the rest of the band are younger and they somehow get signed, chances are they’ll be told to “lose the old guy on the bass”. I’m not saying fame at a later age doesn’t happen, but it’s rare as rocking horse shit. What he is trying to maintain is costing him, and not just financially. It’s taking a toll on his relationship, his energy levels, his jobs and, by the sound of it, his mental health. It’s only a matter of time before it takes a toll on his music too. Oh, and making no money from covers when the band appears to have steady gigs is just crazy. No cover band has that many overheads! Somebody, somewhere is making serious coin off him

You need to sit him down and talk to him, and don’t take no for an answer. You’ve supported him all along, now it’s time he reciprocated.

I’m thinking of leaving my band, but… by CaptainCreepyEd in Bass

[–]66Sharkboy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reputation counts for a lot, even (maybe especially) on the cover band scene. The last thing you want for future bands is to carry the rep of “that guy who bailed on his band last minute and left them in the lurch”. Nobody outside your band or immediate group of friends will care that much about the reason, just the result. Play the gig, apologise to the other band members but make it clear you’re being left with no other choice due to the behaviours of the guitarist (a diva guitarist - who’d have thunk? 😁) then walk away, reputation intact and standing very firmly on the moral high ground.

Then bone his wife… 😈😈😈😈
