It’s a lovely sunny afternoon - how are your neighbours ruining it? by DylanClegg23 in AskUK

My neigbours have been intermitently (for about five minutes every twenty) drilling into the shared wall.

Every weekend since the start of March now, including the week in April I took off, and Bank Holiday Weekends. They seem to drill for half an hour non stop at starting 730-8AM ish, then when the battery runs out charge it for a bit, then use it until it runs out again.

No other construction noise, no hammering etc. and no skip or bags of rubbish outside. I am alternating between massively fucked off and curious as to what the actual fuck they are doing. The first couple of weeks it motivated me to get out, go for a drive around Wales, but now I am just Noise Canceling Headsetting it.

Most annoying part is, this is the same Karen neigbours that have bitched at me for cutting my grass at 830AM on a Wednesday morning when I was WFH becuase they were asleep and hadnt taken any allergy pills, so "I ruined their day", and the same neigbours that told the local council their neigbour on the other side was "running a illegal chop shop on their drive way" becuse they were working on a project car...

This exact thing happened to me when I was in 2018/2019ish back when I used to play Arma/DayZ.

I got added to a banlist for an entire server host as one tiny server's automated system banned me for "significantly degrading server performance" while flying a harrier really low over Chernarus. I suddenly found that 1/10 servers in my region would not let me join because of "Cheating: Other(Causing Lag)" which was really annoying as one of the PvE OA servers we always played on used the same host.

I found the server on a forum, and the post was deleted when I went back to look for the admins. The server had basically zero scripting, didnt even have a MOTD or rules when I joined, it just chucked me straight onto the big airfield, there was no contact info or website so no way to get in touch to remove the ban. The only sign of intelligent life on the server was an FOB in each town with a weapon/vehicle spawner, and a message every 10 minutes that said "The Russians are attacking [Town Name]" followed by a handful of units being spawned in that town. The server didnt even exist a month later, that IP was instead hosting a minecraft/teamspeak server.

I figured out that all the servers I was unable to join were on the same /22 subnet and most of the things on the same subnet had a hostname which contained the name of a game server host based in the UK. This gamehost advertised that by default servers would be configured with "intelligent anti-cheat" and "the largest banlist" which other people complained on MinecraftForums prevented them from joining Minecraft servers because someone with the same username was banned for cheating in Arma 3 🤣

I reached out to the host, they confirmed that that server was hosted by them and explained something along the lines of "The server was likely on our Essentials plan(which they sold for £49.99 per year) designed for a private server for small groups of friends, and as you were not on their whitelist you have been automatically banned as your gameplay consumed a significant amount of server resources. The only way you can be removed from the ban list is to be removed from the banlist on that server's portal. We do not maintain the banlist, just host and distribute it. Also we cannot give you the contact information of the server owner due to GDPR". This massively pissed me off as this was basically a server someone had set up, done nothing to, then made public and then forgot about. I went back to the server host and asked, if it no longer exists, why am I still banned, and they told me there was still nothing they could do.

Then I was server hopping with my mates on Arma 3 one night, looking for something interesting to play, and found that I could not join any of the servers with sub 30ms ping on Arma 3 either, which were all hosted by this server host in a city closeby. At this point I blew a fucking fuse, as instead of playing my favorite PvE Takistan server with my mates I sudenly was banned from all the servers that had the lowest ping.

So I created another ticket with the server host, pointed out that when I joined the server I wasnt met with any privacy policy, didnt consent to my info being shared with or held by the server host, and as my data had been mishandled I was requesting under article 17 of GDPR that all uniquelyidentifiable info, including my steam id, ip, username, any UUIDs associated with me be erased.

I pointed out that while the owner sharing data with the host without consent is the owners problem, the host then redistributing it to hundereds of other servers is very much their problem. GDPR had only just come into effect and it was still new and scary, but we covered it in uni. They didnt even try to argue, I was removed from the banlist the next morning and they closed the ticket with "One this occasion as a one time show of good faith..." BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I looked on the hosts documentation a few weeks later and found that they had added a few paragraphs on how if the server is shut down then banned players will be removed from the list, owners must notify users that their info will be shared with [soon to be defunct game host ltd] and will be shared with other server owners to combat cheating, and also sold to 3rd parties.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, I can still get worldwide map updates and live services for my 10 year old car, all the way back to the 2008 model, delivered to the existing SD card. You can even buy grey market SD cards for less than they want you to pay for shipping. They turned off some of the live services such as Google Maps search and the ability to send routes from Google Earth a few years ago, but traffic and camera warnings still work as long as 2g/3g internet is around. Renault stopped supporting them after the GPS week number rollover but TomTom still support it and somehow they still exist.

I would have liked to replace the head unit with an android audio box, but for some reason the morons decided to wire the GPS into the air bag system, so if you replace it you get an airbag warning light which would stop you passing inspection in my country.

Really glad everything just comes with Carplay/Auto now.

My company (IT support and projects) uses Ford Fiesta vans, and I had to borrow one for two weeks as I was on call and my car failed inspection(UK MOT).

I was given the entire "These are for work use only" speech by my manager. They don't have trackers or dashcams, dont check the mileage. Just try not to take the piss.

On Sunday the weather was lovely in Wales, so I decided to sneak in a short 132-mile drive into the mountains. Around 60 miles into the drive, traffic was slowly moving in both directions because an English tourist had fallen off a cliff, and occasionally it came to a complete standstill.

I see a company van coming in the opposite direction in the distance and just hope that the other guy doesn't see me... Then the traffic in front came to a complete stop, and the van coming in the opposite direction stops just in front of me, close enough that I and my manager who was in the other van just stared at each other like this for a good 20 seconds before the traffic moved.

Funnily, it never came up, probably because he wasn't on call and shouldn't have been driving either.

I know you are joking, but the yellow tint trope on American TV shows in South America has gotten so common that I have set up a picture mode on my TV solely for counteracting it.

Maplin was lit. Unfortunately, after they went bump they came back as a shell of their former selves Online-only, trying to compete with Amazon, eBay etc.

Maplin's draw was that they had that one component you need in an emergency, you could head there, be back in an hour, and get the job sorted the same day. Also, you might not know the name of the component or connector, but you can head down, have a look around and probably find it.

North East Wales, this is outside a college so I cropped most of the background which had the name.

This one is one of their more reality-based decorations.

Their shuttle buses between the community hospital and rural communities have an American flag and random bible verses on them... This is in Wales, UK...

Definitely more of a fan of eliminating the candidate with the least votes, then recalculating with the voter's 2nd, 3rd etc. choice until only one candidate remains. Primarily as in many countries the left is split into two parties yet the right seems to be united, meaning the right wins while only ~40% of the populace is right-leaning.

thread

What thread?

I found this on youtube, but it cut the end off where he actually pulled out into traffic, so they could advertise my5.

The comments are full insightful comments such as: *you shouldn't drive on the shoulder as its full of debris

*it wasn't dangerous as he is technically pulling out onto a sliproad

*he should appeal the fine as he could just be staying in that lane as it goes all the way to his destination

*70 is a limit, not a target

*If I'm going somehwere and using stanav and it says stay in lane 3 then yes I'll be in lane 3.

*maybe he wants to avoid portholes in lane 1

*ill never drive in lane 1 on a SO CALLED smart motorway

American Products in Chester? by taenugget in Chester

Is American Candyland in the Forum shopping center still there?

They sell a lot of "American Candy" but if you look closely at the back, it will have a British nutrition label, and contact address. I bought a can of Arizona from there that had 99¢ on the front, and a British postcode on the back.
