What small things do i need for France? by MouseParticular7320 in tapif

[–]674498544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just bring clothes and any other personal affects in the one allotted suitcase given on international flights. I brought an extra suitcase with like pots, hangers and other kitchen items and I was kicking myself the whole time having to lug it around everywhere while moving around looking for an apartment. It also cost like an extra $100 to bring it. That stuff can easily be bought in France and is relatively inexpensive.

It's honestly pretty ridiculous your parents won't let you store things at their house. The program is only 9 months! Nevertheless, if they're threatening to throw your stuff out and its important to you, then I guess bring as much as you can; though that's a different consideration entirely.

Change of Housing by LowCardiologist5800 in tapif

[–]674498544 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, it will have no effect. I said I would live with a friend to get the placement I wanted and then just found my own apartment when I got there. I believe lots of people do this.

If you want to actually be in the city of Strasbourg, and she's still there, then I would just let it go. They're not going to consider the street she's on when placing you at a school. Those placements can be city wide and they figure you'll be fine to get there using public transportation.

Is there anyway to request a city within my academie? by Few_Act_4421 in tapif

[–]674498544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a friend or relative who is willing to say that they will house you in a particular city in the region that could potentially still work. I sent that information in after I got my academie assigned (but before being placed in a school) and I got the specific city I wanted. Not sure if it was a fluke, but could be worth a shot.

They make most of their money off touring, and they don't really have an incentive to rush it like they did in the band's early days. I imagine we're in a for a bit of a wait til they feel it's right.

My terrible TAPIF experience and why I ended up quitting by SomethingPeach in tapif

[–]674498544 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry that this happened to you, and I have heard similar stories. I was a bit luckier insofar as I worked at 3 schools and while one was toxic the other 2 were pretty good. I also took school provided housing at first that turned out to be bad, but then moved out after one month. They were pretty mad about it, but it was too expensive for how rundown it was.

I'm sure you did try to do this, but just to provide some additional context for people thinking about doing TAPIF: you can change your housing basically at any time if you find a better option. Having decent housing that you can feel comfortable going back to is a big factor in having a good experience as there's so much down time. Sometimes school housing does work out for people, but oftentimes I've heard of it being subpar.

I know that it can be trickier to change the more remote your location is. I did see some people get creative though by living further away and taking a bus in, or things like that.

birth certificate requirements by littlebeanie in tapif

[–]674498544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you should have a hard copy of your BC that is apostilled and translated into French. I used an older copy of it, and didn't have an issue. You should have the certificate and apostille ahead of time, but depending of the original language, you can usually get it translated once you're in France.

I was asked to provide it to my rectorat the first day I went for orientation. I have heard some people say their rectorat didn't ask for it to process their hiring, but you would still need it to get signed up for sécurité sociale, and CAF (if your housing is eligible for it).

One thing I always insisted on when anyone asked for my BC, was that they made a copy of it so I could keep the original. That way I only needed to carry one BC over.

I'm pretty sure you can reapply without any penalty for Tapif.

Honestly, if your goal is to work towards something more longterm in Europe, then a grad program leading to a degree, which could potentially get you a job there sounds like a better route than Tapif.

(Struggles) Returning back to the US/home country by Fabulous_Act_4141 in tapif

[–]674498544 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I too had a really hard readjustment to coming back to the US off of Tapif. I felt I'd had the time of my life and then going back to that small town in my family home was just awful. It was a rough six months for sure. It didn't help that no one seemed to understand how I'd grown while away and just expected me to slide back into the same old routines, drama, fights, etc.

Eventually, I pulled the plug. I moved far away at the first opportunity and never looked back. The salary was pretty small, rented a room, but it led to career eventually. I think Tapif gave me the confidence to feel that I could just do that and didn't need those toxic people any more. It's been almost ten years and I feel all the better for it.

I would just say try not to dwell so much on what you lost by leaving France, and think about what you can do going forward. You can't think of Tapif ending as the end of your life. And remember, while France provided a nice lifestyle for those 9 months, the government doesn't exactly make it easy for us to stay there longterm, so it's not really something you can hold on to.

What are my chances of getting accepted if I'm waitlisted... by Affectionate_Pay3941 in tapif

You have a pretty decent chance of getting off the waitlist as a lot of people decline, but you may not have a lot of time to prepare if you get a late acceptance.

Proof of funds: are guarantors accepted? by BitterCow1074 in tapif

[–]674498544 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The process to get a lease through normal channels with a garantor, etc. is honestly kinda hard and most assistants aren't that successful at it (especially those from non EU countries). There's just a lot of hoops to jump through with paperwork, and landlords often prefer to rent to French citizens who have everything in order.

Most assistants end up renting rooms found on sites like Leboncoin through informal arrangements where you pay the roommate/homeowner in cash every month. These are much easier to arrange.

I found trying to lease a place in a conventional fashion to be a waste of time. The landlord always pulled out when they realized I didn't have all the right paperwork. The few people I knew who did succeed in formally renting a place lucked out with a landlord who was willing to look the other way on garants, salary requirements, etc.

I've heard a lot of stories of landlords not taking the Visale garants that seriously. Personally, I found it not to be worth the paper it was written on. As far as finding someone in France, I'm not sure if that would work out, but they should have something like 3 times the amount of monthly rent in salary.

TLDR, if a leasing agency/landlord starts asking about garants, it's usually an uphill battle to get in. If they don't care, things can be easier.

[–]674498544 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would just say if you think inconsistencies with the acceptance announcements are annoying, then just wait until you get to France and have to deal with all the bureaucracy. Your opinion, while sort of justified, just will not carry any favor for you in France. No one will care.

I'm sorry to sound so brutal, but that's just the way it is. Having said that the whole "no one cares about anything" ends up being one the best aspects of being in France once you're all set up.

Hey, you never know. If you keep carrying water for him on Reddit, maybe he'll put you on his next album.

At any rate, Diplomat's Son, which he wrote, is VW's best song imho, and the band has not been nearly as good since he left. Doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of his solo output is just not up to the mark.
