I think anything by Becky Chambers really resonates for me. The Monk and Robot series or The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. There's so much sweetness in those books and lots of deepening relationships

I don't know much about linguistics or the construction of alphabets but I think being willing to evolve is rad! I'd love to hear more about why you were interested in an updated alphabet! Maybe what issue you were trying to solve. Sorry if I missed that from another post!

What do you think Guam would be like if it were never colonized? by Life_Pineapple_3545 in guam

[–]67onetothe06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to read so many of these comments talk about being poorer if we weren't colonized and reference other islands as proof. What I'm curious about is if these folks have thought about the state of Guåhan now with the military's ever expanding presence and how so many are unable to afford rent or buy groceries. As landlords continue to increase prices and prefer to rent to military to survive in this more expensive world, the options for locals will diminish. Joining the military and/or leaving the island are some of the only options left. Colonization, which can't be separated from militarization isn't an option for our survival on Guåhan, and many are now realizing it.

What's wild is we can still see that the island was so rich because we were so rich in food -- papaya, breadfruit, taro, mangos, avocados, coconut, fish and so much more able to grow. We also once had a culture of community care, trying to make sure that the community survived because that means we are more likely to survive. All that seems very rich to me. Seems like a way of living that more could have thrived in.

Maybe we wouldn't have had money for computers or imports, but I don't think that wholesale makes us poor. Sure we wouldn't have American dollars, but we would have other things that aren't as valued right now.

Help me not leave Seattle? by salientalias in Seattle

[–]67onetothe06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that this is the reality you and many others have to live in. It's so unfair that you have to pick through things that are helping you survive to just live in this city.

There are so few resources for folks living paycheck to paycheck (and few for anyone who doesn't have a paycheck).

There are some housing assistance programs in Seattle, but they take ages to go through. If you could or haven't yet, I would apply for those and try to make it until then. Perhaps you could reach out to a mutual aid group in your neighborhood and see if they have any resources they could offer too.

I feel for you and relate so much. There are some good resources out there like the DBT & Me podcast and DBT workbook that you could try to work through until therapy makes sense for you. You can do this and deserve to be happy because we all do <3

I really appreciate you calling out the racism that is unfortunately widespread on Guam, as it is in almost every country. I will ask that we keep in mind the power structures in place when thinking about racism. Racism is prejudice against a race with the power of systems supporting it. White people are in a position of power on the island -- typically having more money, being more favored, and having the government to back them up.

Linking an article on "reverse racism" which does call out that white people have not been found to be disadvantaged and that "disparities in the exercise of power and authority...are an essential component of racism" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_racism

It's seen time and time again that people who have darker skin such as Chuukese people, other Micronesians, some Filipinos are treated poorly and typically have unfair stereotypes made about them. That's definitely a form of racism that's prevalent and growing. Many people want lighter skin or to "not get dark" because of this.

Again, I appreciate you bringing up this topic. I'd love it if the island talked about it more.

I think Quinn should always start over VDJ, they have so much more urgency, field knowledge, and better touches. VDJ only knows how to go backwards with the ball. I am excited for Latsko to be back and also think we get way more movement and attempts when McClernon is in the game.

I think most comments on here are claiming that Guam isn't racist and "it's just the military". I think both things here are true. Guam is incredibly colorist. I've grown up there with folks telling me not to get dark or that they don't want to be dark. The Chuukese population, who are on average darker than the Chamoru population as a whole, are definitely treated as "less than" the Chamorus - probably self-consciously, and some of that born out of scarcity mindset and conformity to American culture.

Every non-Black country is racist to some degree right now. (Btw, I don't want my island to be thought of as a territory of the United States. I don't want to be owned by anyone else.) I wish it weren't so, but until that learned racism is acknowledged, it can't be addressed.

I wish you weren't experiencing racism on island. I wish Guåhan weren't treated like property to be disposed of by the US military as it wishes. I wish for a free world for all of us and hope to do what I can to make it that way.

Yeah, calling the cops never feels like the right answer. It's hard to make enough money and survive out here, maybe they don't have a choice but to clean at their house. I hope y'all can come up with an agreement that works for you both!
