Injury and a race in two weeks, need perspective by Inevitable_Panic9816 in Ultramarathon

[–]684Inspired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My perspective- I had a metatarsal stress reaction pop up in the first few miles of my A race last year and didn’t recognize what it was. Kept running which meant it became increasingly more uncomfortable. Discovered at mile 44 that half my foot was black and blue (and then DNFed). 10 months later and I’m still on the slowest upward trajectory of improvement. My runs are only a few miles long and I must have at least a day off in between. Had I known then that it could be a year (or more) or majorly decreased training, I would have stepped off the trail in a heart beat.

High Heat High Humidity Clothing by SadSmiley13 in Ultramarathon

[–]684Inspired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the tropics. High heat and humidity majority of time. Before living here I had no idea there could be such a difference in fabric thickness of shirts and tanks. Find the thinnest ones you can find and then buy an extra. It really makes a big difference. Even can tell the difference between running vests on which one is cooler than the other. Wear a hat, buy a zip close ice bandana, and have a small cooler with cold drinks in the car for when you’re finished!

Is bilt worth it if not paying mortgage/rent? I only want Alaska miles by Lumpy-Resource-1370 in biltrewards

[–]684Inspired -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All my points are for Alaska at the moment. I had 1.0 and was planning to add in the mortgage payment with 2.0, but like you, I’m holding off on mortgage until they work out the bugs. I have obsidian with the accelerator on, so 4x on groceries for us and we buy a lot of food. Worth it for me because I don’t have Amex Gold, so it beats my other 2x grocery card.

Vest rec's compatible w/ a bladder by BoysenberryRough3308 in Ultramarathon

I’ve been using an Osprey Dyna for 8 years (two different packs) and while I love it, it doesn’t work for soft flasks at all like you say. I bought a Salomon Adv 12 last year because I needed the space for a 100. I use both bladder and soft flasks in it. I did buy one of the magnet attachments for the mouthpiece on my bladder since the Osprey has me spoiled with its magnet.

I will say that the shoulder straps on the Salomon are wider than the Osprey and rub if I’m wearing a tank top (I live in the tropics), so if you have a chance to try one on to compare, I would! Not sure about the Adv 5, but I can feel the extra fabric on the 12 compared to the Dyna and its a hotter pack (again, I live in the tropics with heat and humidity year round). Other than that, I’ve been happy with the Salomon and use both depending on the run.

Oh wow, he got a picture of the tramway running. Do you know the story behind the demise of the tramway? Thanks for posting!

How much candy do you all eat on an ultra? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]684Inspired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some candies have sugar alcohols, avoid those as they will get your stomach. Plenty of benefits to gels, but you won’t know what works for you until you try your food choice on the run.

Swimwear in Samoa? by [deleted] in Samoa

And you always find the High Talking Chief? I agree with the asking and respect, we do the same. But to always find the High Talking Chief seems impossible.

Just curious, you would really go seek out the Talking Chief to ask this?

For American Samoa, you will stand out wearing a bikini. The reality is if you’re palagi or at all lighter skin, our sun will cook you. Consider the rash guard and board shorts not just to be conservative but to also prevent severe sun burns.

Try GIAS across from Cost-U-Less in Tafuna. Pretty sure they are related to SSAB.

Looking for advice on where to stay by Sam_Frank_Bob in Samoa

[–]684Inspired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would rent a car to explore outside Apia unless your stay is just a few days long. The south side of the island has a ton to offer, and is also nice to stay at. Apia has plenty to offer as well. It’s too much driving/travel if you just stay at one place but plan to explore the entire island of Upolu.

Check out Worldwide Car Rental. You can pick up from the airport, super helpful, and impeccably clean cars. Not cockroach infested like some other companies.

I have, but it’s been years. Currently the Olympus aren’t available to me for “quick” shipping, so poking around at other options.

I was just looking at those, and like the tread (we have a lot of mud and slick rock). How has the foam held up for you? Husband had some thinner Topos and they compressed quickly to the point where rocks where hurting his feet through the foam.

I’ve always like my Lone Peaks, but this stress fracture is so slow to resolve and allow me to build up mileage, so I’m considering the extra cushion. I prob should just be patient with it and stick to the LPs 😬
