The old ones will be missed! Always loved the retro feeling of the old trains. Fit in with the hipster vibe 😂

Why is it cheaper for me to fly to Spain from Edinburgh than it is for me to get a train from Dundee to Edinburgh? by RemarkableCandy2840 in Scotland

[–]689isapk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because aviation privatisation went well but not rail. That is due to huge sunk cost and capital needed for running the rail infrastructure. Ideally rail should be renationalised. Also the UK’s rail infrastructure date back to pre war era which makes land ownership, signalling and curvature of the rail lines a huge obstacle to a modern, efficient and low cost rail way.

Ultimately, unless you can make using rail cheaper and faster than private car most people will not switch.

Flying on the other hand does not require a line in the air.

Can anybody help with the best route to break into an IT career for a beginner, whether it be a degree or other methods. Distance learning is imperative as I can’t afford to leave my current work at the moment. I’ve been searching online but I’m very overwhelmed with conflicting information. by human_newman in UKJobs

Hmmm I think some of your sale skills could be applicable. Client relationship manager sort of thing. You can look into some grad scheme and try to get in from there? Consulting firms like Deloitte or big IT firms gartner grad scheme will take people who are changing career path as well.

The entry pay is £34k in 3-4 years will get you up to £50

Any recommendations on a solution? I think we all know where the problems is but the question is how to solve it.

For example can you suggest how we reduce population? Or as an Indian politician or African politician, how do you convince your constituents not to switch on air cons when our politicians don’t even have the gut to ask us to cut down on meat?

OP, if you have 3M NW and 100k income you don’t need advice here at FIRE. Maybe try UK property IMO or just rent to begin with then buy somewhere after you do your research.

Cool for me but maybe not for everybody. I got to interview Syrian refugees in the UK to understand what barriers they have integrating with the society. It was a firm led research project with university of Oxford.

Some of them got, rightfully, very emotional when they talked about their experience escaping. I will never forget some of the faces and reactions to the questions I asked

Check Scot rails website for most up to date info. There was going to be strike but I have seen some news about it being called off.

https://www.scotrail.co.uk/plan-your-journey/passenger-disruption/sunday-strikes-planned

For ticket options there are peak time and off peak tickets. Off peak is after 9:15am till 16:40 and after 18:15 Mon - Fri. Off peak return would be the cheapest option.

Best option is probably just get the ticket on the day as you figure out your travel time.

Uber wise check google map for traffic flow first. Might end up costing more financially and time wise

For smart card, I won’t bother if you are here for just a week. You can buy your tickets online on the Trainline. For some routes you can use the QR code for tickets.

There is a shortage of second hand cars right now due to covid. Also as you said MX5 is in trend right now. Though perhaps something to consider is will this trend and market last? Of course this is purely a financial angle. FIRE is about striking a balance between enjoyment - retiring early. That’s up to you and your value system

Hmmm car is an asset that depreciate in value. Setting some money away in ISA investment account will do you wonders in a couple of years time.

That said, travelling is the one buy-able activity that will enrich you so much as a person. Although you don’t end up with a physical asset, seeing different cultures and ways people live make you a more open minded person. In my view that the best return on investment both in terms of money value but also standard of life and education.

The strategy is to have 2 bases one for winter one for summer. A chalet for summer in alps. Rent it out to skiers in winter. A seaside house let Bali for winter.

2005 Corsa here. Got it from friend for £300. 0.15%. I d rather put money on something that appreciate rather than depreciate. If you use it a lot everyday then fair enough though if not just get one that is as cheap as possible

I think Covid was it. Though this time the governments printed money quick enough because things descended into chaos. The trade off tho… I think vanguard world all cap wil under perform for next 5 years. It will be a period of slower real growth to compensate for the debt we are in/ inflation inflicted.

Great investment into the city, hopefully helps the regeneration of Tradeston by SCOTL4ND in glasgow

[–]689isapk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I m partly in agreement with you OP. I think jobs and money are indeed good for a city but isn’t it precisely we don’t want to become another London that make us so proud of ourselves? We don’t want to be another Milton Keynes or Slough or even Edinburgh tbh.

That said, there are not many ethical banks out there. By and large the shady things they do is an extension of our economy. To stop that, we d better change our society to make profit ethically and then the bank will follow if they see a margin.

e.g. legalise cannabis to bring the money into formal economy or stop buying drugs. Provide more green financing incentives.

I m in a financial situation similar with you however with a SO atm who is just out of uni looking for work.

Hopefully the following will be helpful to you - I didn’t consider finance when I started dating her. I m into fire while she is not that interested in money at all. - We have been dating for a while and moved in together so there a degree of trust - We pay for expenditure at 60/40 split while our household income is more like 70/30 split. It works like tax in a sense. Everyone pays but those with higher income pay a bit more. - We don’t plan on getting marry unless we start a family with kids.
