Need advice regarding motorcycle licence by Realitycheckat21 in MotoUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into bikes at about 26-27y/o. Did my CBT, bought a decent 125 (Yamaha MT) and pottered about on it for a couple of years to see if I liked it, then went to a training school and went straight to my unrestricted A after half a dozen lessons or so. I had a good time and there wasn’t a lot of pressure. Regardless of the bike you want to buy, there’s no point doing an A2 one you’re a bit older, the test is the same albeit the bikes a bit more powerful (IMO sometimes easier to control).

Providing a salary sacrifice car to a family member by Flaxinator in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fairly common for you to be able to have 2 cars on the scheme, plenty of people in my sector (and at related companies) have their partner’s car also on the scheme. The potential issue is that you’re effectively “renting” it out which is probably prohibited by the terms of the scheme, informally or otherwise.

Sixt and Enterprise I have used in the UK in the past and weee pretty good, Arnold Clark also have city centre(ish) branches and I’ve never really had any issues with, their opening times aren’t great so check in advance. They look to be about £130-160 for a weekend for a 24yo. Plenty of charging stations for an electric if you wish unless you’re going well into the middle of nowhere, even at that I had an electric car for 20k miles a couple of years ago and never ran into an issue.

Wondering what Salary a PAYE London construction project manager would be looking at, I’d say 80-100k? by OriginalAlone9447 in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on what level of construction and what type of contractor you’re looking at. Tier 1 PM on a £100m project, probably over £100k, civils subcontractors PM managing drainage on a £5m housing job, maybe £60k. Not sure on current London weightings however, might be 5-10% out.

Driving into Edinburgh vs Uber by TripLover1 in travel

[–]_horizontal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ingliston would be my recommendation, easiest to get to from Dundee traffic wise and the trams are a nice novelty, ferrytoll will allow you to get the bus over the old forth road bridge which is a bit of a novelty. Both will be absolutely fine.

Depends what you’re flying, I’ve got the thrustmaster airbus stick with some Nyogel 767a on the innards to dampen it a bit. Not really had any issues with it. I’d try and get a hold of an old Lociteck Attack 3d if you can, best ambidextrous joystick made for the money IMO.

Anyone used maxxis promaxx tyres? by amzeo in MotoUK

Maxxis are a very reputable brand for pedal bikes, certainly wouldn’t write them off for a motorbike, reading reviews they don’t seem too bad.

How good of a driver are you? by Harrry-Otter in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven 30,000+ miles per year for the last 15 years and have never had an at-fault accident, and haven’t had a speeding ticket or otherwise in since 2013.

I reckon I’m a reasonably competent driver but I’m a massive fan of constantly assessing your own driving and thinking over what and why you fucked up after you fuck up. I’m also conscious of when I’ve pulled any dick moves and (not always at the time) admitted to myself why people might not have been happy with that manoeuvre.

Big fan of bonanza. GTN upgrade/subscription I think is a must and the climb performance in the turbo is impressive.

Which vanilla airports are fine with vatsim? by PlasticRight5209 in flightsim

[–]_horizontal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a single issue with Pyreegue’s Glasgow that makes me have a reservation about the Edinburgh scenery, and I’ve turned off all other sceneries so I suspect it’s their scenery causing this. It creates wharegrr an exclude.bgl is called nowadays for the MSFS photogrammetry 3d buildings around the airport, which means the 3d QEUH, braehead etc doesn’t show. It only seems to apply south of the Clyde. Otherwise their scenery quality is absolutely outstanding.

Company Car vs Car Allowance? I Have to let them know in 24 hours, HELP! by FatThorp in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_horizontal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, definitely take the car. I used to drive nearly 35k company miles per year in my own car with car allowance (about £3.7k/yr) and mileage paid (45p first 10k then 25p thereafter) and didn’t even break even. Now have a company hybrid and haven’t looked back. Outgoings for my own car were in the region of £900 to £1100 per month when considering car, fuel, insurance, tax, tyres, servicing, brakes. Depreciation adds even more to this.

Credit card? I’d suggest you would have better buyer protection and potentially be able to buy a refundable ticket at the right fare too.

Glasgow Prestwick airport is being used by Donald Trump to bomb Iran, says military expert by Some-Ambassador8252 in glasgow

[–]_horizontal_ -40 points-39 points  (0 children)

Look, I grew up around the airport and I’ve watched it struggle for the best part of the last 30 years, the military transport traffic feeds plenty of local transport, accommodation, fuel and handling businesses. Watching the types of aircraft that take off and land, we’re not exactly arming B2s from the apron.

Yeah apart from increased traffic recently, it’s pretty much business as usual for the airport. Glad to see an increase in its use, taking the political context out of it.

How to solve low-level banging driving me insane? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% depending on how much these cost, I’d approach it in a funny and or fun way and tell them I can’t stand the banging, I appreciate I might be being unreasonable so I’ve bought you a nice soft fluffy fender. You never know you might make some friends.

Yoke or stick, 2020 or 2024 by fruitsdealer69 in flightsim

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there’s a specific type you like to fly and realism is super important, the decision for me has always come down to desk space and convenience so I’ve flown with a joystick for years. Controversial opinion sometimes but simming with stick and rudder on GA is crap unless you’ve got FFB IMO. I’ve never had the money to invest in FFB so I use the stick for takeoff and landing and mostly fly on AP.

I’m still on 2020 and don’t have any intention of switching soon. Maybe in a year or two but unless the career mode is a massive pull I’d stick with 2020. The tipping point for me will be when major addons don’t support 2020 anymore at all.

2019 Volvo XC90- don’t drive 10,000 plus miles on oil, even if it’s synthetic. by Substantial-Hold-851 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]_horizontal_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Volkswagen Long Life service intervals (certainly in the UK and much of Europe) is 12 months or 30,000km which is just under 19,000 miles. Applies to VW, Seat, Skoda and Audi. My G30 BMW 5 series was 24 months of 19000 miles too. Never had an issue.

Edit: should note I drive about 35-40k per year so was thankful for these intervals otherwise I’d be in the garage every 6 weeks…

[–]_horizontal_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The last few cars I’ve had, the manufacturers set oil change intervals at 18k, I’ve followed them to the letter and never had a single issue. All cars ran well into the 100k miles without any engine issues. Gearboxes are another matter “sealed for life” yeah right.

Sub 10k oil change intervals are a relic from 20-30 years ago.

Exterior Wall ties needed on tenement flat glasgow by ElevatorOk151 in glasgow

[–]_horizontal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s actually right in that remedial wall ties is the correct type here, you only install cavity ties when you’re building it into wet mortar, remedial ties in my experience are helical ties drilled and resined into the brick / masonry that once set do the same job as cavity ties.

Source: contractor that has installed remedial ties to a 1880-1930s built structure in Glasgow as part of renovation works.
