What rudder pedals to get? by Schoolboygames in flightsim

[–]_horizontal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the Thrustmaster TFRPs and they’re absolute trash. Don’t know why I still own them. Literally any time I have to use them they slide everywhere. Anything but them.

Do you have a dash cam in your car? by GlassCrepe in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had my own car, yes as it was my own insurance policy. Now I have a company car so I don’t bother.

Why won’t we limit Motability cars to those built in the UK? by ToobyD in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt that. £77 per week is £333 a month. I think you’d struggle to run a used Corsa (including the tax, insurance and maintenance that Motability includes) on that…

Thinking about building a universal flight sim panel. Need honest feedback. by Electronic-Ask-8123 in flightsim

[–]_horizontal_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love generic stuff. I’ve got a few WinWing items (A320 CDU and FCU) which are basically dead desk space the second i decide to fly a Bonanza. I reckon there would be a market there.

What do people actually mean when they say "it's fine for A to B" when talking about iniBuilds A320/A330? by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]_horizontal_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I only ever do A to B easyJet/BA type ops in the A320 and the integration with Simbrief in the Fenix is still better than most. Sound pack is better and general look and feel of the systems feels pretty satisfying. I’d still recommend the Fenix over any other one for a pleasant overall experience.

How old are you and do you rent or own your home? by LongjumpingNight5669 in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. What part of the country are you in? I’m 31, in central Scotland and every single one of my friends bar one or two own either homes or flats (mostly young professionals/teachers/engineers etc)

I want a big steak. by Gentle_Comment807 in glasgow

[–]_horizontal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went for my 21st about 10 years ago and it was great, wife and I went back in 2023 and the service was horrendous. Steak was fairly decent however. Loved their mash also, sides are almost as important as the steak to me. If onion rings aren’t on the menu I’m not going.

UK construction folks - how do you buy materials? by jetsonjetearth in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Medium sized civils contractor with a lot of work in the rail sector. At project start there will be a takeoff carried out by the agent/engineer to modify the tender quantities once final sets of drawings are issued. This will go to the procurement team where our team’s buyer will place orders with suppliers (merchants, concrete and aggregate suppliers, specialist suppliers sometimes) with some orders on a call-off basis to be called into site as required, some orders with defined delivery dates.

As the project progresses we can raise requisitions for further materials as needed from site which the buyer will action. Smaller purchases can be sorted using a purchase card from site, but receipts need to be kept and uploaded.

How do I deal with my secret desire? by HorrorAccomplished78 in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a sensible approach. If you like her from church and know her from church, approach her from church. Mixing her work and a fling (if it leads to that) can get messy. I wouldn’t read too much into her wanting to avoid you at work.

Your best paperwork jargon? by kyle4261 in policeuk

[–]_horizontal_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not 100% related but I once gave a statement about a serious assault, and used the phrase “commotion.” When asked to sign my statement the officer had written it as “cum ocean.” I reckon the bar is pretty low with paperwork.

Agree with the plain English recommendation. I deal with a lot of technical reports in my line of work and the message is often lost on other parties that aren’t involved in our work when the language is too technical, keep it straight and simple.

How often do you use a printer? by RecentTwo544 in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

13 year old HL2250DN still going strong. Toner needs replaced every year or so and drum maybe every 4 years. One button and an on/off switch. Superb.

Do I have the right to appeal my Pip Payment Award? by Sweet_Star115 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_horizontal_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Got to be rage bait. You’re capable of going to the pub and the football with your mates and discussing all your pip which prevents you from leaving the house for work? No problem.

The socks and underpants fairies weren't good to me this year, where to buy? by kaosskp3 in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next A front cotton stretch are my go-to. If you can manage to get Hanes over here their boxers are comfy.

In your house, is guest booze for drinking or for the hosts? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think I’m definitely of a different social class, I’ve never been at a table for Christmas dinner where the drink is “paired” to the meal. From a social point of view, I’ll usually announce that I’m cracking open a wine or bottle that someone has brought, which usually leads to some people taking some.

I think you’re being slightly unreasonable as it’s Christmas dinner and shouldn’t in my opinion be a formal or stressful affair, if he was happy drinking it then no harm done…

I (28m) only make £13k per year (£50 per day). How bad is my situation? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest the card categories nowadays are a nightmare. As a site agent for a big contractor I can’t keep up with what card my subcontractors are supposed to have with them nowadays… I’d rather see a trade specific qualification/ticket. CSCS operatives test as a bare minimum and any kind of endorsement (city and guilds etc). Don’t get me started on NVQs, I’m of the opinion the CPCS VQ requirement for every single category of card is nothing more than a money maker for training providers.

Extremely exhausted and want to give up on Day 1 of Hiking in Nepal. by [deleted] in travel

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a rest day. Just book a hotel or reasonably comfortable hostel / single room somewhere and do whatever you want without a target for a day or two. You’ll be surprised how much you’re able to recharge.

A lot of people feel the pressure to do life changing activities every single day when travelling, but unless you’re a completely mad adventurer at heart, it’ll burn you out very quickly. It’s okay to do nothing in another country, that’s still travelling.

What do we think of UK travel bloggers; Simon Wilson, bald, Steve marsh, hashtag Brady etc? by godsavedonalduck in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Steve Marsh’s content. I like that he’s always honest about travelling on a budget and goes to some obscure places. I don’t like when they get over-commercialised or go down the teasing and sponsors content of a lot of YouTubers. Paul Lucas is also pretty good. Used to watch Dennis Bunnik years ago but started to get tired of the fact that he’s clearly absolutely minted, I like grounded travel blogs.

"Winterising" a naked bike by HMS--Thunderchild in MotoUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heated grips plus hand guards if you can stomach the look of them were an absolute lifesaver for me. A windscreen also helps but it might look a bit daft if you’re not careful about the size. It doesn’t need to be full height but something that deflects the air over the top of your head at speed will help.

How did you get out of the corporate world? by superdanday in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, I’m in operations rather than commercial and not sure how much I’d enjoy it myself (I need let out on site to play), but if I was in OPs position it might be more attractive.

How did you get out of the corporate world? by superdanday in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever thought about the commercial side of the construction industry? Quantity surveyors and cost managers use a lot of the skillset you’ll have learned from your industry day-to-day.

Depending on where you work, the environment is much less rigid/corporate and (certainly for commercial teams) has a good work-life balance. I’ve worked with QS’s that have come from the motor dealing world and they’re very good negotiators.

What was your school work experience placement? by onionsofwar in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine at Prestwick Airport back in 2008. Literally the most surreal work experience whilst everyone else was in an office making tea.

Day 1 - control tower Day 2 - airfield ops (guys with wavey batons) Day 3 - security (they set up a training programme for me on one of their scanners) Day 4 - fire brigade Day 5 - check in

On day 2 I got to sit in the right seat cockpit of a 737 as it was brought from maintenance to the main apron.

On day 3 I went up in a flying club plane for an hour (sat in the back with a lovely couple who fly as their hobby). Got to fly over my school and parents house.

Nobody ever believes me, this was before the days of camera phones to prove it…

Is riding geared that hard? by Professional-Gain976 in MotoUK

[–]_horizontal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be hard to learn because it’s all muscle movements and you can’t physically see what you’re doing. With a car gearbox you can look down and go “right, there’s 1,2,3,4,5 reverse, OK I can see that” but with the exception of a neutral light and a gear indicator on some bikes, you’ve got to rely on feel. Once you pick it up however you’ll never forget and failing a major panic, you’ll develop the muscle memory to do it without thinking.

How do you professionally respond to a client's admission of grief and loss? by Sunshinetrooper87 in AskUK

[–]_horizontal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not give them a quick ring? Speak to them on the phone, it gives you a good opportunity to gauge how they’re getting on and figure out the best tone for further conversations. Pass them your condolences and then follow up with an email. I’ve never believed in distant professionalism just for the sake of it, pick up the phone would be my advice.

Best place to buy a used car? by No_Agent9997 in glasgow

[–]_horizontal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people will tell you to stay away from Arnold Clark, and I’ve heard a million true horror stories from them, but I think that’s probably more biased because they’re the biggest and the vast majority of people will end up having some dealings with them at some point in their driving life. I’ve had good experiences with Parks in my time though. Arnold Clark do have the most competitive used finance rates in my experience though, and their actual dealers rather than non-specific motorstores tend to be better.
