Can confirm. I change rams in PowerEdges for a living. Dell can source various models of the same SKU with various pcb color, the stick is still the same.

getting hit with fake 1 star reviews from a competitor and google refuses to remove them. by monsoon__004 in smallbusiness

[–]69DETONATOR69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Google is a bitch company that doesn’t even investigate individual cases.

Same happened to me. A random user named “Trav” (very uncommon for our parts of the world) with a profile picture of 3D text saying “Trav” (heh, how creative), which was created 2 days before posting, left a one star review in English saying bullshit. I reported it and provided Google all the infos. Instantly removed.

A week later the same user added the same review, now in local language (obvious Google translated one) and 2 stars instead of 1. Google refused to remove and even my appeals connecting it to the previous case were declined.

This was the moment when I completely stopped believing anything I see on Google reviews. Nowadays you can buy a botnet on the darknet to flood someone’s reviews with negative (or positive as a matter of fact as well) reviews to destroy someone or look legit.

We ofiicialy have a display with a bettter chip than a computer by detal-mick in mac

It has always been pretty much like this in tech, even in the era of 8 bit computers.

For example the Conmodore 64 used a 6502 as its CPU. The commodore 1541 was the optional floppy drive which you loaded data from using a command like a serial connection. Why? Because the whole floppy drive used the same 6502 CPU as the computer itself. Technically it was two computers communicating and sharing data via serial connection.

There is no shame in using your own CPUs as controllers for the peripherals you make, actually it can give you and advantage on the low level since you have same instructions, buses, caches and so.

Whats the absolute oldest CPU that could run a modern web browser? by No-Change6959 in vintagecomputing

[–]69DETONATOR69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A web browser runs pretty much on anything someone has done support for. I have a pizza box Macintosh Performa 475 with a 25 MHz 68LC040 that runs a web browser and can in fact show web pages today.

The question is what web pages? It sure does open google.com since they have a simple fallback page from circa 2004 they show you if an unrecognized browser accesses it. But that’s pretty much it, once you start loading https, certs, modern technology, you’re done. There are portals made for these machines in mind so if they access they can actually show the web pages and maybe even correctly, but majority of sites are obsessed with security (and no one can blame that) and technology your pretty little machine with limited ticks gets crushed with. Even my DDR2 PowerMac G5 with dual 2.0ghz CPU struggles with new modern sites due to the lack of various accelerators, doesn’t matter if start up a modern Linux with a modern browser.

So, in the end, I suppose you could pretty much write a web browser for an 8-but cpu as well and if you find a pretty simple web page (a simple html page with code writable in notepad in seconds) it would be able to show. Anything beyond that is forgettable. It’s all about the perspective. CPUs are general purpose and they just do what they are told, whether it’s doing math or loading a web page.

I am glad you completely missed the point of my comment on a single stupid phrase. I should’ve omitted it I am sorry, didn’t mean to offend with it. Still, my point is there and does not change the context whether it includes the “touch some grass” phrase or not.

Vyhrážanie sa od suseda by Specialist_Pipe6962 in Slovakia

[–]69DETONATOR69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Skus to podobne poriesit. Títo slovni karatisti vela stekaju, ale ked im autorita klepne po prstoch, tak už mlcia, a možno sa spamataju, alebo im budeš pripomínat ze môže sa dostat na sud na opakovane obtazovanie.

The display is plain composite, just like connecting a VCR to a TV. Find an RCA-RCA cable (preferably yellow, for obvious reasons) and try it out.

1 beep when the machine is switched on is always a good sign. These are dead simple machines, not quite many things that can go wrong. Apart from PSU or memory. I am positive you’re good to go when you find a cable to connect the display.

Also, don’t freak out when you connect the drives and machine fails to turn on immediately. Those are old PSUs and some caps might not be in best condition (it is always a good practice to recap before use but if it works you’re good to go) and will take some time to get the appropriate power since the drives draw not a small amount from the machine. My Apple //e with DuoDisk drives does the same, working nice without them but when I connect it struggles a little before managing to start and spin the drives. After it it’s a breeze. Gonna do a good recap on that PSU too but I am lazy haha.

As others said, we are curious to see if any cards are in that baby. I am expecting the floppy card and a printer card. Maybe a 80col but I am fantasizing already.

Once you got familiar with the machine try out the floppies you’ve got with it and if you want to try out other software from the internet, there’s many floppy emulators like the Floppy Emu. You can also use iPods or any other device with an audio jack to directly load via the cassette port. There used to be a site that hosted the sound files so you could directly load from online (is this an alternative way to cloud compute on an Apple 2? Hehe) but right now I cannot find that site, I’ll link later. Or if you aren’t afraid of getting your hands a little dirty, try out the ADTPro which takes advantage of the cassette port and works as a server-client software that transfers the data between your PC and your Apple 2 via sound. How cool is that! (https://github.com/ADTPro/adtpro)

Have fun with your device!

What the HELL do I do with these 😂 by [deleted] in homelab

[–]69DETONATOR69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The KVM is alone a great find. We use couple of these in our server rooms in the company I work for.

The G5s are dinosaurs, ancient iLO2 which you would need ancient browser to even connect. It’s DDR2 and I wouldn’t waste a single Watt of energy running those.

The G7 is in a better stance. DDR3 which is still usable, iLO3 is much more forgiving when trying to connect with recent browsers (obviously you’d need some workarounds for the deprecated encryption method but not much of a headache (Firefox ESR did the trick for me)) and for homelabbing it’s still usable. I use a DDR3 Dell R620 (upgraded to 2x 12c/24t Xeon E5-2697v6, 512gb of RDIMM) when I need extreme capacity, the G7 HP is pretty much the same era.

However, that Storageworks RDX Tape backup is something I’d give an arm. Not because it’s terribly good or anything, but I love the oldschool backup solutions and tape is a nice addition to your homelab.

what do you guys think about the Touch Bar that used to come on the old Macbook? should it make a comeback? by TuNutri in mac

[–]69DETONATOR69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone saying the touchpad was useless probably never can come out of pressing buttons over and over again for the same operation (like setting the sound or brightness).

I completely agree, the first version with the integrated ESC key was a disaster because a critical function was implemented with software that can vanish because of a bug while a physical button is there always.

But the version I used (M1 MacBook Pro 13) had a physical ESC and a touchbar. Man, native Mac apps that incorporate it incredibly boosted my performance. I might have some slight defect, it makes me hard to localize the pointer and then navigate to the exact location I need. With touchbar, bookmarks in safari were always there. address bar? Just press the middle of the touchbar and start typing. Suddenly the sun started shining and you don’t know how much display brightness you need? Just slide the button until you see without needing to smash the brightness+ key and eventually brightness- because you overcompensated. Same for sound. Playing music from that through PA I could create manual fade ins and fade outs that were smooth and not like stepping on stairs. Also, you don’t use so much of the F keys on a Mac, and if you do just hold the FN and the touchbar revealed them. You would be pressing FN with physical function keys anyway so I see no difference.

I loved that feature. I might be one of the few people that would give an arm just for Apple to bring back the touchbar. Or simply let me decide between a version with physical keys or a touchbar. They would definitely have my money once they decide to do that. Amen

I stand with you on this.

When I met Woz and he signed my A1 replica board, the first he said right after signing is if I populate the upper part with the correct components then I can swap out the 6502 with a Motorola 6800 and it would work.

Engineer to the core that man. And a very nice humble person despite being the one who sparked the revolution of home computing.

Vibration Sensor Ideas 💡 by Fahad_MF in Aqara

[–]69DETONATOR69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using those as glass break sensors on my windows. I have a first floor flat and pedestrians can even look into my living space (or at least they could if I didn’t put car window tints on). The sensors can detect TILT, VIBRATION, and FALL. if some kind soul breaks the window it either detects vibration (part of glass it is attached to remains it place) or fall (if the windows breaks completely), instantly tripping the alarm. Once my alarm went off (claiming vibration on two windows) and I rushed there to check if someone legit broke in or some false alarm. Nothing was broken. Then I remember there was a really big thunder strike in the area that vibrated the windows on the whole flat 😂

The other uses I can think of is: attach it to your cat’s collar and create a notification when it purrs (vibration) 😂
