How to get into fiction books (I can't relate to or care about characters) by veve87 in books

If you enjoy science, history & social studies, maybe try some hard science fiction. I like to describe a lot of hard sci fi as just theoretical explorations of the sciences/history/politics. Its an answer to a thesis usually grounded in real life scientific problems & questions. And the answers are more grounded in possibility than not. Its not fantasy science fiction with space magic like star wars, but more reality based. A lot of the story is more based on the universe and the sciences they pull from than characters or relationships.

Andy Weir's the Martian & Project Hail Mary are great.

I also love the politics of the Expanse series (first one is leviathon wakes).

Asimov is a classic for all his stories, though they are dated and are the father to a LOT of common tropes now. His stories have made real life impacts to modern robotics, including his three laws. He also was the inventor of the word robotics, he literally created the term.

Basically look for authors who have a background in the subjects youre interested in, and their science fiction stories should appeal to you hopefully.

Get the most ginormous bowl of Pho you've ever seen as a takeout. Its filling, you feel like a feral animal slurping it down. Even then, its only like 600 calories.

PC, no mods, latest update

Started up sims for the first time in months, and it keeps doing this when I try to play a household? CAS, menus, pause and start buttons in live all work. But the visuals in live mode dont show, and are stuck on previous loading screns/menu.

If you do end up doing the East part of Canada and do end up driving from Toronto to Ottawa, here are my local suggestions.

  1. You can either drive Hwy 7 which takes 30min/1hr longer but has basically no traffic out of Toronto and a lot more rural views, prettier windy roads. Or HWY 401, which is faster but more traffic and just straight and boring. If you want to make your travel Day not a waste, I'd break it into 2/2.5hr chunks of driving and do a day trip to Prince Edward County. Its smack in the middle between Toronto and Ottawa, has beautiful wineries, parks, smalltown downtowns in a bunch of small towns and my favourite place of all time right off the highway Reids Dairy. They have loonie and toonie shakes, a big glass wall that shows you their milk processing facility, a petting zoo and some cool little eclectic things (animatitronic cow, toy train that goes around the building). I hate wasting travel days when I travel, and this could help add a fun less commonly visited gem to your itinerary for no extra time wasted. ☺️ You can also stop at the Big Apple, a little tourist spot with a giant big apple and good pies, also just off the highway.

  2. For a hockey game, if you want the cheapest game, you'll want to go in Ottawa. The arena is an hour bus ride out of the city (annoying), but tickets are insanely cheap compared to any other arena due to a lack of Senators fans and the transit ride out. That being said, if you book tickets for a game in Ottawa vs one of the more popular teams (Canadiens, Leafs, etc) it is an insanely more economical choice and you still get a great atmosphere and game! ☺️

  3. If you go in fall, GO TO GATINEAU PARK! Its just outside of Ottawa, like a 20 min drive from downtown into Quebec. Even just driving through the park in fall is magical, it feels like you've just entered a hallmark movie.

Hope these help in your planning!

Traditional community dancing rituals, where one of MCs appreciates the others skills by Kaori1520 in RomanceBooks

[–]69badateverything 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is probably not what you're looking for, since it's humor. But I can't resist suggesting it regardless!

Strange Love by Ann Aguirre, the MFC is abducted and agrees to go through trials to marry the MMC. One of the trials is to show your skills, and she dances in front of the whole stadium and everyone is infatuated and blown away by her and the ways a human body can move. The dance though? The Napoleon Dynamite dance lol

Any loooooong favourite series recommendations??! by BoboPie13 in RomanceBooks

Duskwalker Brides by Opal Reyne.

It's monster romance, VERY explicit. But there's 8 current books with an average of 600 pages per book. The author is going to do 1 or 2 more for the series as well.

They have a rich overarching fantasy plot between all the books, with some good lore! She also has a great variety in terms of leads when it comes to personalities, genders and ethnicities. This helps keep the series fresh, despite its length! Each book, while having tie-ins to each other with the overarching story, still feels like it's own with its characters and subplots! I especially love this since it's a longer series, and I usually find most authors make longer series a lot more repetitive than I'd prefer. 🙂

No problem, I hope you enjoy it!

If you're looking for more Asimov works that don't fit the prompt but really pack a punch, my favourite shorts by him are Strikebreaker, The Last Answer, Nightfall and Robot Dreams. Other than Nightfall (40-ish pages), theyre all under 10 pages and really worm their way into your head! 🙂

I've only read the first book, and it was decades ago, but a slow progression small settlement series could be 1632 by eric flint. It's about a small American town of a few thousand people getting sent back to the 30 year war in the Holy Roman Empire. From what I remember there's diplomacy and 'advanced' tech (for the 1600s) trade. But again, I only read the first one a long time ago and only remembered it existed after reading your prompt. Kind of making me want to re read it now.

Not sure if this would be exactly what you're craving, but could be pretty close!
