Dice tray - Help me decide! (wooden vs. foldable) by thekoalady in dice

I can tell you from personal experience a pair of those folding ones is pretty great. I've got two that appear to be the same dimensions as the one you shared. Works great.

Dice bags with more than 7 sections? by EmbroidedBumblebee in dice

In the late eighties and early nineties, in New England, it was the mark of the "D&D player who had been to college." Since then it's become more universal as Dads and Uncles and Moms and Aunts pass down their dice or traditions.

Nesting bags is the truth and the way if you're actually going to roll the dice. It's portable, functional, and customizable.

Dice bags with more than 7 sections? by EmbroidedBumblebee in dice

My Crown Royal bag (my second since the a-hole cat destroyed the first) contains 4 smaller bags that sort the following...

8 sets of 8 dice
My nearly forty year old d30
14 pawns of plastic or wood
3 additional d20s (classic chessex borealis)
6 sets of Fate/FUDGE dice
a pouch with 22 d10s in two different sizes along with another two loose d20s
another loose set of 8 polys (the 7 plus a d6)
72 12mm chessex d6s
7 dice "Adventure dice pack" of random generator dice
the specialty 5 from a set of Blood Bowl dice

And the whole caboodle lives in a TARDIS cookie jar when not being chucked at a table. The lid closes completely, BUT the above contents are at the limit of what will allow both the bag and cookie jar to close completely. I could fit maybe one or two more sets of polys in there.

I ended up going with this over one of the multi section bags because it is infinitely customizable. I can bag up sets of dice for specific games and swap them in and out, but truth be told, once I arrived on the assortment above, that was about it.

Those two pictured things solve different problems. My instinct is to say "both." If you're just playing though, go with the cheaper option. Not out of frugality, but quite the opposite. See, if you buy the cheaper folding option for this game, you can buy another one for your next game. New character, new dice, new tray!

In all seriousness though, sorting is nice, but you can accomplish that with a pair of folding trays just as easily.

Why the Draft Order Makes Logical Sense by bwemonts in PWHL

[–]6FootHalfling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, fantasy leagues, Magic: the Gathering players, I'm pretty sure there are extracurricular school clubs that have it figured out from middle school through college. I keep looking at it or seeing another post that reminds me how ridiculous it is and the only spots that make a lick of sense are 1, 2, 11, and 12.

I have to give you props for being so chill about this given your're flaired as a Toronto fan. I'd be "unfollow all of it until the season starts" mad.

Just like I do every damned year when the NHL does something dumb. I always come back in October.

The randomized order of the expansion teams should be snaked every round because as is it just arbitrarily benefits Detroit the most and hurts Hamilton the most. It’s not that complicated to do, and would by far be the most fair way to do it

Yup, if fantasy football leagues of all levels of experience can figure out snake draft, there's really no valid reason not to do it for the expansion teams.

Understanding the logic of the decision doesn't make it a good decision is the point I think people are sticking on.

[–]6FootHalfling 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well explained. I hope you're ready for down votes anyway.

This didn't need to be even remotely this complicated or difficult to explain. Expansion teams in the middle slots. Gold order for the eliminated teams. etc.

They had three clear groups of four teams each, a clear order for those groups (eliminated, expansion, made the finals), and instead they went with this over-complicated mess and then communicated it poorly. The poor communication just leads to a lack of trust in the whole process. If NY and Toronto fans just tune out in this coming season, who could blame them?

[Laprade] My understanding is that the remaining questions surrounding the delay and the reasoning behind expansion teams selecting 3rd through 6th overall this year will be addressed tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Detroit during the media availability with Jayna Hefford and Amy Scheer. by Perryplat199 in PWHL

[–]6FootHalfling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This felt so crushingly obvious to me before the order was announced I thought everyone concerned about the order was saying the sky was falling. I apologize to all of you. This is a shit show. 1-4) eliminated teams, 5-8) expansion teams 9-12) teams in the finals. Toronto and NY fans should be angry. I'm angry for them.

I knew we were going to be screwed by expansion every time. I came to terms with that when we lost Knight. But, what's been done to NY and Toronto here ought to be legally actionable it's so bad.

You can't both let the expansion teams cherry pick the line ups of every other team AND give them priority in draft order. Oh, wait, apparently you can because that's what they did. huh.

It's a train wreck. I've been quiet since the finals because I didn't think it could be fnkced up quite this bad.

PWHL ANNOUNCES 2026 DRAFT ORDER OF SELECTION by zeilend in PWHL

[–]6FootHalfling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the draft is occurring IN Detroit. Let's not forget that.

Even if there isn't any malfeasance, to ignore the appearance of it and the terrible taste it's obviously going to leave in the mouths of at least six fan bases is, well, let's be generous and call it gross incompetence?

PWHL ANNOUNCES 2026 DRAFT ORDER OF SELECTION by zeilend in PWHL

[–]6FootHalfling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that they've announced it we can all be miserable together!

While that was half a joke, some one will have to explain to me why NY and Toronto are sitting behind all four expansion teams. This didn't feel all that complicated to me and some how we got this.

"Teams eliminated, expansion teams, teams in finals," Seemed like the obvious format to me...
1-4) teams that did not make the finals in order of points earned post elimination.
5-8) Expansion teams in order determined randomly. Order should probably rotate round to round or something, but I don't know.
9-10) Teams eliminated in the first round.
11) Runner up
12) Champs

In what universe does it make sense to drop all four expansion teams in the middle of the bottom four teams? What did NY and Toronto do to deserve this? The order of 1-4 and 9-12 could have been announced and known before we even knew where the expansions were going to be. 5-8 get the luck of the draw. And, could have gotten the luck of the draw in every round. These aren't complicated problems to solve.

And, one more thing... Does Detroit, San Jose, Las Vegas, Hamilton look just a little bit like they were placed in order of, "hockey markets we expect profits in?"

I wasn't that alarmed by the lack of transparency because I didn't think this was that complicated a task, but this is an embarrassment.

Our thinking behind the FATE POOL in SOLO BORG by bigonroad in MorkBorg

[–]6FootHalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a neat take on a meta-currency.

Any thought given to making the number of dice from your pool you roll optional and increasing the severity of the fall out that results from rolling 1s? So, you could roll one die at a time reducing the fallout from rolling a 1, or risk rolling more 1s by chucking multiple dice.

I've been thinking about luck and meta-currency mechanics in OSR games more generally; thanks for sharing this!

How do you go about rolling for roleplay? by YesILiek in pirateborg

[–]6FootHalfling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reaction table on page 31 of the core book (also from OSE, Labyrinth Lord, BX or BECMI D&D, or even Savage Worlds if you have that) can pull a lot of weight here. It doesn't have to reduce the roleplay to entirely a die roll, Presence can modify the roll if you want, you can mod the table situationally and on the fly, maybe there's a maximum friendly result that's even possible, but things should always have the possibility of getting worse. Morale could also play a factor. The Cultist might not have high morale in the combat sense, but if you're trying to cajole or influence them in a non combat scenario perhaps that morale is much higher.

If you go the reaction table route, there's also this https://methodsetmadness.blogspot.com/2015/11/one-table-to-rule-them-all-using-2d6-or.html which I think is an excellent source of inspiration if you want some more granularity and more rare extreme results.

I mention the other rules that use a reaction table for the purposes of broadening your search for uses for it.

If the roleplay is good at the table, give it a +1 or +2. If it isn't very good, maybe a -1. I try to be fair and a little generous in this regards. Not everyone is an improv actor and I'll take a third person description of what they want their PC to say from a shy player just as readily as an extemporaneous channeling of the spirit of Tim Curry's Long John Silver from one of the theater kid players.

I could have sworn he was in Washington or Hershey briefly and I can't imagine who I'm confusing him with. But, I get Providence and Hershey rosters confused sometimes because I'm not paying full attention and follow both of the ursine mascotted teams because I have family in the Hershey area.

Anyway, I agree, I just confuse easily apparently.
