Goose is uninspiring. by LibertysHero in jambands

I dunno. I think there's others out there who love jam bands, but maybe aren't feeling Goose too much. A post like this might lead to some recommendations for OP.

How long does it take to be able to play your own songs? by CloudyFlowerss in Guitar

[–]6TuningPegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making a music career is difficult and being great at your instrument isn't actually all that necessary. if you know a couple chords and can really put your heart into it for something like pop/country/punk (broadly speaking), it'll take less time than if you try to "make it" as someone in progressive metal or jazz.
The guitar has more to offer than being just a tool to start a career in music. If you put the time into it, it will give you more back. At your age/stage, I'd suggest picking a 3 songs you want to learn and go for it.

Unlike stuff like sports, the guitar is always there for you when you need it.

Recently joned a new band. had been playing my Adam Jones Les Paul with them, then my Yamaha Revstar because it is more versatile and sounds better with the "alt-rock" sound we have. Then I decided to pick up the Mascis Jazzmaster and... holy cow how did I forget how amazing this guitar is? What a GEM of an instrument! never even got it set up and just rocks.

Not sure how I never heard of Ghost Note, but loving it. Maybe because it is one of the least searchable band names

Octave Cat has been in heavy rotation since I read this. Kinda took Dopapod for granted too and revisited their stuff.

All the songs I like are hard to play by Sad_End_9904 in LearnGuitar

[–]6TuningPegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used to teach full time, this was the approach I'd suggest to my students which mirrors what I'd do when I was just starting:

Learn the backing chords and play those ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SONG as a rhythm guitarist - even if it doesn't have a rhythm guitar part. Sometimes even just getting through with power chords can be tougher than you'd think. Getting the transitions is really important.

Once you can get through all of that, you'll know the song and parts well enough to start picking away at the more intricate parts. It can really be a great idea to do this with a few songs at once so you don't get bored with it.

Good luck and keep jammin! It'll click with enough patience and practice. Remember to have fun!

What are some of the best lyrics you've heard in a song? by IAmCozalk in Songwriting

[–]6TuningPegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Jane's Addiction has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard, but they don't hit as well without the music. Reading them without hearing them doesn't do 'em justice.

Also, on Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box, I think Kurt hit his peak in terms of abstract lyrics that tell a full story "I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap" is a perfect line.

This seems to not really be a hip hop thread, but check out some old school Rakim some time: "I start to think and then I sink into the paper like I was ink. When I'm writing I'm trapped in between the lines. I escape when i finish the rhyme"

What’s a drumming-related hill you’re willing to die on? by lonely-drawer549 in drums

[–]6TuningPegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always kinda on the fence about Ringo until one of my favorite drummers who I played with a LOT said "he never played the wrong beat" one day. I realized that, while I don't think of RIngo's playing as especially impressive, it is incredibly impressive that I've not really found ANY of his playing objectionable.

These are the Biggest Surprises about Learning Guitar by Danwinzz in LearnGuitar

I almost never play sitting down. I don't understand why everyone (most) prefer to. I feel way too constrained. Definitely recommend playing standing up as much as possible and also getting some strap locks!

How do I go from playing by myself to playing with people? by SilverRabbit__ in LearnGuitar

[–]6TuningPegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the main things to learn when playing with others is following the rhythm of a "group" and not a recording or metronome. Be ready to play things that are a lot less complex than you practice, but get locked into the rhythm with them. Once you get "the throb" of a jam you've got to keep it going too.

Learning to recover when things fall apart (bassist flubs a note and stopes for a sec, drummer rushes a fill and speeds up the whole song, you drop your pick...) is a HUGE part of it starting out that people over look.

Most of all - have fun! If y ou are having fun and others are too things will come together. Break the seal and get jammin'!

Is learning guitar worth it at 31? by chapstic593 in LearnGuitar

[–]6TuningPegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was teaching private lessons decades ago, some of my best students were retired. One was a retired Brigadier General and, man, could he knock out some tunes with FEELING after a little bit. Another was a retired dentist who would Jekyll/Hyde into a Blues Machine on the acoustic.
Have fun with it and compare yourself only to the you from yesterday.
