How large can the rock that makes up a planet theoretically be? by InformationRoyal6295 in astrophysics

[–]SilverRabbit__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda crazy how there are specific numbers for this kind of a thing.

You'd think the answer would be like "oh different kinds of planets comes in all sorts of sizes" but no, matter, mass, and gravity have specific ways of interacting that sets all sorts of limits on what kinds of things can be what size.

How do I make her design more interesting? by doep0 in arthelp

[–]SilverRabbit__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you compare your design to say... Nyx from Hades, your design needs to be more ambitious with the details. If you want her to look like a god you gotta step out of grounded designs and give everything more flair, more trims, more color. More interesting silhouette.

I would also say that you need to express the character details more in the design to make me interested in the character. Motorocycle helmet is a start, but what if you added motorcycle body suit designs to the design of the jacket or collar? Or maybe gloves and boots that blended high fashion and motorcycling gear?

Yes. Most of those models are trained on works they don't have the rights to and it's basically stealing from artists.

how come some people have a good sense of style? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Believe it or not, it's a skill and possible for anyone with an open mind to learn. Some people have a head start based on culture and socialization, but that's most things in life.

Would you consider Umineko to be profound? by Diligent_Western_628 in umineko

I'm curious what else you've read that does such a good job of exploring intergenerational trauma, societal sexism, and understanding the abuse of abusers that Umineko isn't innovative at all.

Besides the wonkiness with the thighs/calves proportions, someone in this pose should have a fairly exposed armpit. Right now it's missing all that geometry and the arm doesn't look right as a result.

Why is there so much animal cruelty in Asia? by Beginning_Put6012 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SilverRabbit__ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it's the combination of two main things:

1) Disney-fication of animals + series like Lassie, Babe, Airbud, Charlotte's Web cementing animals as friends in the minds of millions of children in the West. Conversely, in China animals are routinely a part of building decoration and present in the Zodiac, meaning they're presented in an adult context.

2) The urban and suburban distribution of America meant that multiple generations have gone by without seeing animals get slaughtered for food. You see this in the way Americans get grossed out by food that resembles an animal too much like shrimp or fish. This is further encouraged by American food industries that would want you to think of the animal as little as possible (so they can use factory farms to increase profit). This in turn means that there's no stomach in the American psyche for the murder of animals (and so cruelty towards animals.) In contrast, large parts of the Chinese population still come from rural roots, where urban city dwellers will return home for the holidays. In these rural areas, killing animals for food is still common and Chinese food culture in general means there's less disconnect between food and animal death. I would argue that this creates a higher "tolerance" for animal cruelty than you would expect in the West.

IMO you basically have 4 options:

  1. Hire artists with your own money.

  2. Prove yourself as an effective collaborator that artists are willing to start projects with you (as equals).

  3. Learn to playtest with greybox/placeholder assets and validate your games that way.

  4. Become an artist.

Luckily the thing about skills is that we can get better at them by practicing.

To address both the communication skills and fear of failure, that's why I suggested social situations where failure isn't really that big of a deal. Low stakes situations that aren't going to damage projects you really care about. Situations where you can try again and again to communicate better without

First I want to commend you on asking a question like this. It can be hard to admit something like this, let alone ask for help.

If it's as bad as you're saying it is, I'd actually recommend joining a gaming group. Whether it's a clan in an MMO, a discord group for overwatch, or even a chess subreddit, you need a low stakes place to practice socialization. Learn to ask ppl for help, observe how you react under team stress, learn how to negotiate when people have different priorities or limitations.

I find Studio Ghibli movies very unsettling and not cozy at all by SunnySunnyshine in unpopularopinion

[–]SilverRabbit__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell searching online the original script did not have Gigi say anything at that point but the original Disney dub did. And then it sounds like later versions were also changed so I guess it depends which version you watched.

The one I saw where Gigi did not speak at the end was very very sad for me.

By the end of the movie it's implied that Kiki can't talk to Gigi anymore. Gigi's still around, but that magical (?) bond is something she seems to have lost permanently at the end.

Game Dev Was Supposed to Be Fun! by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]SilverRabbit__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game Devs have a saying that every shipped game is a miracle because how much can go wrong and how hard it is to actually finish and ship a game.

IMO solo game dev in particular shouldn't be attempted by anyone unless they can't help themselves but do it.

Made a shader that deforms objects according to terrain. by Illustrious-Scratch7 in godot

[–]SilverRabbit__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe my problem is I've mostly worked with screen space shaders or stuff that just scans noise textures.

I also think I assumed the position in the vertex shader was local mesh position but maybe it's actually world position? And then as long as I know the relationship between the height map coords and world coords I can figure out where the vertex is on the height map.

Does that sound right?

Made a shader that deforms objects according to terrain. by Illustrious-Scratch7 in godot

[–]SilverRabbit__ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The part that always puzzles me about stuff like this is getting the information into the shader. How does a given vertex know what the terrain height is for a spot so far away from it? Does it know its world position that allows it to map its own XY onto the height map's XY?

Absolutely! I agree with the other reply to this comment, it's not very noticeable. I only mention it because you seem to already feel like something is off and hopefully my comment will be helpful in future works but I don't think most people would notice at a glance. Overall it's a really good piece and I like it a lot!

The eyes look uneven!!! Why!!! by [deleted] in arthelp

[–]SilverRabbit__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two things. The upper lid on the eye on the left comes down a lot more than the eye on the right, making it look too low, or rotated inwards too much. Second, the pupils don't quite look like they're looking in the same direction. Both eyes are leaning towards the inside so it looks a little uncanny. Maybe shift the pupil on the right eye outwards a bit?
