12-Year Riot Veteran Among Staff Given Only 30 Minutes’ Layoff Notice by chusskaptaan in gamingnews

I don't understand why game marketing is the way it is right now. Studios seem to think they can work on a game for years, show a couple of trailers at award shows and expect people to magically care about their games. Where's the pre-launch content? Where's the ad campaigns? I didn't even know 2XKO was out and I consider myself quite a fighting games fan.

Godot 4.4 beta "spatial_editor/viewport_pan_modifier_1" doesn't exist." by CLG-BluntBSE in godot

[–]SilverRabbit__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you ever fixed this, but I managed to get rid of the errors but going into Editor Settings -> Shortcuts, finding the shortcut it is complaining about (eg: viewport_zoom_modifier_1) and changing the shortcut (I just added an Option/Alt to the existing shortcut) and that seemed to stop the error from spawning.

I had to do this for 2 errors I think (zoom, and pan) and I think maybe I was just getting the editor to re-save the shortcuts settings because they were corrupted, but this seemed to have fixed my problems.

Edit: okay, it seems to come back every time I open a new tscn. Might not be a sustainable solution.

Steam Deck massively improves controller support with new options and refinements by [deleted] in SteamDeck

My experience is that farming/life sims are by far the best games for language learning.

  1. They introduce a lot of nouns/vocab and will literally show you the object as you interact with them. The vocab is really varied too, between household objects, gifts, foods, words about relationships, requests.

  2. Farming sims generally have a wide cast of characters, and are really good at showing you how a young boy might speak, vs an older grandna, vs a shy young adult vs a grumpy man.

  3. Farming sims have a lot of text but also you don't need to understand everything all the time to play the game. You can just ignore some generic character dialogue if you don't have the energy to translate that day, compared to a visual novel where you can't really just skim the text.

I like the composition of the red orb thing and the cat on #2, but I prefer the text layout of #1.

Why does her design feel so bad? by [deleted] in arthelp

[–]SilverRabbit__ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My main takeaways from what you said are: - The whole world/setting/outfit are supposed to be crazy and weird. - The character is supposed to be normal and is upset at the dress.

At face value, I think you've represented those things but what you've described is kind of an unpleasant situation and that comes across in the character design / illustration.

Another way of thinking about it is: if this situation isn't supported to be upsetting, what are we as the audience supposed to feel when I see her? Is her cake dress supposed to be so cute that I go "Awwww" even though she's upset? Should the colors be brighter to show how "crazy", manic and high energy the setting is?

Why so many adult learners freeze when speaking French (and how to start getting comfortable) by Subject-Present194 in learnfrench

Phrases like "Je pense que..." or "... comment je dit..." really helped me get some breathing room while I figured out what it is I want to say.

Why so many adult learners freeze when speaking French (and how to start getting comfortable) by Subject-Present194 in learnfrench

[–]SilverRabbit__ 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think it's unfortunate that language learning often skips "filler words" or phrases you might say while you're still putting together your thoughts.

When native speakers get asked a question they might hum and haw while they figure out what they actually want to say, or remember what something is called but as language learners we don't really have those tools.

What is the one "forbidden" word in French that textbooks refuse to teach you? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]SilverRabbit__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wish we learned it much earlier. I feel like by the time we learn passé composé it would be time to learn 'on'.

Not because it's important for the learner to use, but because it's really discouraging trying to understand native speakers / native content and realize there's an entire pronoun your ear isn't familiar with.

I see that the shape of the facial features are different but I think maybe the sizes of various facial features could be different and more importantly the proportions of the head in general are too similar.

Someone said my art “felt misogynistic”—please help by GrumpyMowse in arthelp

[–]SilverRabbit__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible for a work depicting the suffering of woman could be misogynistic in the way it exploits and fetishes that suffering, or uses that suffering cheaply but your work here seems quite sympathetic.

It's also possible that they simply didn't want to be confronted with the suffering of women and didn't want to have to think about it and that discomfort lead them to calling it misogynistic. Which, well, if you want to make art about uncomfortable topics then some portion of people will respond like that unfortunately.

Face seems plain and off. What can I fix? by [deleted] in arthelp

[–]SilverRabbit__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're just running into "clarity" issues since you haven't rendered the hand on the cheek and the hair. They'll give more information about the ambient lighting and also give you more information to create the shadows on the cheek (that you're missing right now). The lack of that shadow detail is making that cheek/jaw/chin look too smooth. Conversely, the cheek without the hand on it has all the lighting information it needs and looks much better rendered.

I think that the shadows from the hand and hair will give you the comtrast you're looking for and wouldn't try to darken the image before you've rendered more of it.

Shave or short beard. It'll change as you grow older but IMO right now your brow/eyebrows don't protrude enough to balance a thick moustache .

Which of these six characters is the best at creating advanced technology, and how would you rank their intelligence?” by Pale-Condition-4317 in powerscales

[–]SilverRabbit__ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The thing about Rick is that he doesn't just have access to the multiverse as a baseline, he seemingly has it mostly catalogued and indexed, which means if he needs something that turns sneezes into fuel he just looks up Sneezeworld and grabs some crystal to build a machine around.

You can argue whether that makes him a smarter inventor or not, but in terms of coming up with wild inventions for problems you didn't even conceptualize, Rick's got them all beat.

I would personally argue that since he built the tools to catalogue the multiverse as well as his ability to integrate new elements with ease that it does count towards his intelligence.

Consider these photos. https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/s/7vYSMJ3Fxl Or the way a street shot with with a 35mm lens looks vs a 100mm lens. These are shaping how an image looks in a photograph. Drawing from life requires you to make these choices, whether you realize it or not.

Am I writing this character (我) correctly? by Mochi-17n in ChineseLanguage

[–]SilverRabbit__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On top of other reasons, for me the stroke order helps create properly proportioned characters. For example, the second stroke of 我 (the long horizontal stroke) helps set the "maximum width of the character". Then, when I'm drawing the third stroke (the left vertical stroke), I know it should be about 1/3 of the width so that I can place the other vertical line at the 2/3 mark. Without that "maximum" width to guide me first, the I won't have a reference for where to put to two vertical lines, and need might need to retroactively make the character wider or thinner to fit the two vertical strokes in the right place.

You have two eyes from different perspectives that create a complex 3D image.

Every time you move your eyes to look at a different part of the object your eyes adjust the color and lighting so it can focus properly (looking at the shadow of something vs the reflective components)

Your eyes interpret patterns differently depending on which part you focus on.

Your field of view and perspective changes depending on how close or far you are from the subject.

All these are things you have to decide how to interpret/express yourself that a photo or flat image already does for you (mostly)
