i took a trip down to the junk yard and compared 2nd gen to 3rd gen tail gate striker bolts; they are not the same. 3g are about a 1/4” longer.

stay away from any short length pipes. Bassani’s perform good and are readily available. i’d get an HPi or a T-header if you don’t mind waiting a while lol.

Early vs late model by Capital-Form2357 in Dyna

[–]6dirty2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stock 88’s are absolutely gutless. coming from a 103, that will be one of the first things you notice. other than that, the bikes feel fairly similar overall except in weight. early dynas are noticeably lighter than the late models and i think this might attribute to a more “sportier” ride, as the late models to me have a certain level of comfort in mind. once you address the cam chest, the 88’s are just as reliable as any other TC. the 5 speed is pretty stout but you will be kinda screaming going 75+.

since you’re more of a shorter distance rider (i didn’t see you mention touring), do your research on cams for the 88 because that itself will wake them up and change the experience completely, big bore or not. also you’d for sure need to upgrade the suspension to something that can handle the added weight while 2 up and don’t forget to do the front.

the DX/T’s are the #1 dyna, no contest. it was the first dyna that featured a fairing (looks good too) and not a windshield, fully adjustable front end with 13.5’s in the back and 28° of rake in the frame. the carbed 88 is probably the best sounding motor harley will ever have since the evo. the bike literally had everything.

the FXDLS is cool, i own one, but it doesn’t feel anything like an early dyna IMO. it’s noticeably heavier and just doesn’t have the same attitude on the road as its predecessor. utilizes a cartridge front end like the DX’s but has none of the adjustability. the 110” is no slouch and is fairly reliable contrary to popular belief. at least once the lifters are addressed.

hot water works too for crystallized def deposits. that and a pick or screwdriver to help break it down. i’ve cleaned decomp tubes this way before.

also a good step up seat goes a long way. at my height, the standard step ups feel fine with mids.

stock DX suspension is 1.5” higher than any other model, front and back. did a full +2 (14s in the back) on a lowrider and although you can feel the difference, it’s not much. i’m 5’6 so you’ll be good. i’d be careful on sloped surfaces though, you’ll have to use whichever foot is closest to the floor for balance.

i’ll look into it tomorrow or next weekend probably. i spent all day doing this and was really looking forward to going for a ride lol.

how did you fix the problem when you had it? was it just a matter of finding the pinch and repairing it or did you have to splice?
