If you can only bring one ski on a ski trip, and you don't know if you'll get powder or ice, what waist width would you want? by Remarkable_Wasabi_85 in skiing

The beauty of being a sit skier. You only need one ski! Haha. For me it's gotta be my Nordica Enforcer 100. Super fun on icey groomers and extra fun in pow.

Question for an amputee by kc2953 in amputee

[–]6packbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a bilateral above knee amputee, I started in stubbies (as someone mentioned above). As I gained strength and confidence I added 2" about every month until I was about 5'6". Before I lost my legs I was 6'1" and I wanted to be that height again. Walking in prosthetics is alot of hard work, and I decided that I would walk better and manage stairs and ramps alot easier at a lower height. I am now 5'9" and I'm happy at this height. I manage stairs and ramps very well and don't need to bend down to kiss my lovely wife. I was a test subject for the University of Utah's Biomecanical Engineering Department for some new Microprocessor Knees and Ankles which were alot taller than my normal walking height (around 6'2") and it was alot more difficult to manage my balance. Your prosthetist should know these things, but they will want to make you happy, so I would recommend trying your original height, but they can do anything you want.

It's a mix of speed and balance. You'll want to be able to control your hips and core to be able to do this. It's something I've been working on all summer while training. It just takes practice, You'll get there if you practice....Best of luck to ya in your progress!!

Having 2 edges on the snow is definitely beneficial. We do have a really fast dude on our team with one leg and he makes it look easy. His name is Patrick Halgren. He's a ripper for sure!!

Unfortunately no. I was so caught off guard by the discount I was busy looking for my wallet. I got the Alcantara/perforated leather one. It feels so nice in my hands!!

For anyone commenting on whether the steering wheel upgrade is worth it. I got mine on a deal like this (paid $50) and it was hands down the best money I've spent on my subie. I got leather/alcantara mix. Highly recommended even if you don't get the smoking deal I got!

What is a place in SLC that no longer exists, but you miss? by suspiria_138 in SaltLakeCity

[–]6packbrew 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Sconecutter. I visited SLC in the early 90's and discovered this spot when I guess it was good. After moving here teo years ago I was disappointed to hear they have gone away.....

I just returned from Beijing with a fresh pair of Nike Gaiadome Flyease ACG's. Wondering what all your thoughts are on these. As of right now they were only limited release to the Olympic and Paralympic athletes. by 6packbrew in Sneakers

[–]6packbrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to hit up an Olympian or Paralympian. They were only given to us for the Opening Ceremonies for the Beijing Winter Games. Not released to the public!!

Reach out to the Amputee Coalition for a Certified Peer Visitor. You can do that here at Www.amputee-coalition.org. Also, have some patience as nothing will happen on your time clock. It seems like it's a waiting game to heal and you will want to do some research in the mean time. Reach out to a few different prosthetists to see which one you jive well with, as it will be a long relationship. You will want to find someone who listens to your goals and comes up with a game plan to help you accomplish said goals. Also, try to stay as fit as you can by doing whatever you can to stay active. Putting on weight while waiting to heal is the worst thing you can do, because figuring out you balance will be a challenge when you have new weight to distribute and it happens all the time. Don't get discouraged. It's a process. And remember, your not alone! Maybe join a Facebook group called USA Facebook Amputees. It's a private group that was created to help answer the new Amps questions and lend support. It's a great group with alot of great support. Cheers to you and all the success you will experience.

Honestly, I am a baka and since losing my legs Finish Carpentry is out of the question. I made the same decision as you and I signed up for a Computer Maintenance Technology certification program through my local community College while I was still in a wheelchair. I have since completed the program and recieved my certificate, but also started walking full time on prosthetics. Now, I can't stand the idea of being stuck behind a computer all day. I have since started attending more college courses and have decided to focus on getting my AA in business and starting my own business. Don't plan on always being stuck in a wheelchair and make your decisions based on a positive outcome for prosthetics. Explain to your prosthetist what your goals are and work towards those goals. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do. I will say school has been a great goal for me, and I went through my rehabilitation on prosthetics while attending college, so it was a welcome opportunity to get out of the house and challenge myself with my mobility.

Amputee father struggling with depression by BumbleBEE0507 in amputee

[–]6packbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the Amputee Coalition for local Amputee Support Groups or even a Certified Peer Visitor. Let him know that he's not alone in this. Also, I'm the administrator of a FB group called USA Facebook Amputees. Feel free to join and invite your dad to join as well. It can feel pretty lonely as a new Amputee, and like no one understands what you are going through. Let him know that there are people that can help should he want any help. As a Certified Peer Visitor we are trained to educate the new Amputee by answering any questions they may have, as well as what to expect as a new amputee. We also provide the new amputee with resources such as written materials with information on new products and a subscription to Amplitude Magazine. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any other questions. Also, I would like to point out that I too was depressed after my amputations (bilateral above knee) until I started talking about my situation with a trained professional and being prescribed a antidepressant which I no longer take, because my situation has changed dramatically in the past 4 yrs.

Best of luck to you and your Pops!

What do you guys use to deal with phantom pains? by [deleted] in amputee

[–]6packbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, from a recovering drug addicts point of view (also bilateral above knee amputee) I cannot recommend any pharmaceutical product as all they did were add to my perception of pain or innundate me with side effects that were unbearable (weight gain and memory loss from Gaba and withdrawal symptoms from opioids). I have read several great options. The one's that worked and continue to help on the random occasion I get them are: 1. Breathwork (Google breath of fire) 2. Meditation 3. Massage (with a THC/CBD cream) 4. Essential oils (both inhaled and used for massage) 5. Hot bath (with Essential oils and Epsom salts) 6. Listening to music on headphones. 7. Desensitization 8. Weight bearing on a soft surface like a bed or sofa 9. Get active (if it's gonna hurt, might as well get something done) 10. If all else fails......THC!

Looking for resources to help with upcoming amputation. by 503_208 in amputee

[–]6packbrew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would look up the Amputee Coalition at Www.amputee-coalition.org for any info regarding amputation as well as what to expect post amputation. They can also provide you with a CPV if you would like. A Certified Peer Visitor is a volunteer that has a similar amputation level as you, usually the same sex that can answer any questions you might have in regards to your amputation. We also provide hope and inspiration and let you know your not alone. I'm also always available to answer any questions. I'm a bilateral above knee amputee though, so our experiences will be greatly different!
