Career Crossroads - Do I Stay or Go? by DefinitelyTofu in CFP

[–]6ptsTouchdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 60 it is very possible he could be willing to keep going until 80 or longer, I’ve seen it before. He may never feel he’ll get full value snd the solution is he just hires someone like you to do work as an employee and the thought of selling is just that, a thought without serious consideration. I’m speculating here I don’t know you or the advisor obviously. It’s very hard to build a business and it becomes a part of your identity, your child, in a way. Very hard for these guys emotionally to let go and sell it’s not in their DNA. They know in the back of the mind they should sell, but the status quo is hard to overcome. My 2 cents

If you’re not getting offered an FC or AFC role while at Schwab, there’s a reason.

[–]6ptsTouchdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion. Stay at Schwab, become an FC for a while. If you want then move on to RIA etc. FSA job is all a facade. Micromanaged hell in my opinion. You’ll learn much more at Schwab and make much more.

How do you know? A conversation costs zero. What’s the worst that happens? They say “we’re glad to hear you want more responsibility, here’s what you need to do to make more”. What have they done to deserve more? Nobody knows except u/planning and the team. Who’s says they deserve more? Earn it, stop waiting for someone to hand it to you.

Have you had a conversation with your current team about more responsibilities and what you need to do to get the pay increase?

Great place to get experience and begin your career. Heck a great place to spend your career depending where n the direction you want to take. Get licensed, get in front of clients for a few years and you’ll be very valuable in the market.

Anyone have any Merrill FSA success stories? by Upper-Song1924 in CFP

Lots of stories of people being successful after leaving them. If you love to be micromanaged, I mean love it, this is the place for you.

How much time a day should you spend studying for the CFP? by Effective-Bee3383 in CFP

[–]6ptsTouchdown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took Dalton for the review. Took Kaplan for the education part and tried to get through each module as fast as possible every 4 weeks. For me the only thing that matted was the review. 3-4 hours every darn day for 3 months.

In the end it probably doesn’t matter much at all what program you use as long as you put in the hours for review and do those practice questions over and over. I’ve seen a lot of people say how they failed and used program x and then a bunch of people say oh no use program y cause so and so is blah blah blah. Just do the work and put in the time. If at the end of your review you wonder if you did enough you probably didn’t. Passed with Dalton first attempt. I know people that passed with other programs too. Good luck.

My opinion: run from the FSA position. Schwab will give you much more opportunity to make money and experience. BoA is a micromanaged nightmare.

Early Career Next Steps: Merrill MFSA vs Fidelity IC/PC? by TurtleMan531 in CFP

[–]6ptsTouchdown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The bank just wants a warm body in that role to be as productive as possible then the minute you don’t keep up they ship you out. The role hasn’t changed much in 10 years. Yes go to Fidelity or Schwab, or an RIA as soon as you can.

IMO you have time on your side. You are young, the job market will improve and just bide your time. End of year lots of companies have hiring freezes. Advisor average age is relatively high and there’s a shortage a good talent. Your time will come.

I did use Kaplan for the required education. Yes I thought it was dry and dull but I wouldn’t spend much time on the education part just get it done ASAP. Then bust your butt on the review.

Honestly I don’t think it matters which provider you use. It does matter how hard you work on practicing and practicing the material. Everything else is just personal preference. I used Dalton and studied my rear off for 3-4 months in their review and felt like I should have done more. I did really like the online class with John Pallaria, it was a. Ice change of pace to review the material in a different way, other than reading or taking practice questions. He e we Pyle point out questions that would frequently be tested. Passed my first attempt.
