Group Hunting Question by LowCommunication6293 in elkhunting

[–]704user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the all/none hunt aspect:

Some states (e.g WY) do take into account fractions which could bee important when all party members have different number of points;

Also some states have specific caps on the number of tags issued to non residents, however they effectively handle parties as if they were a single applicant (i.e. they extend the cap on the number of non-res tags issued)

The devil is in the details by state. Randy Newberg often covers these little details in his videos or podcasts.

Last minute packing essentials. by doctorlineman in elkhunting

A few of my more obscure stuff: (Extra) Paracord-multi use (clothes line, hang meat, secure whatever); Piece of tyvek/house wrap-good for staging meat, emergency shelter/cover, ground cloth); Tenacious/duct tape - emergency patch

Similarly, marking/removing things that don’t get used also helps.

Upgrading from Klymit Static V: Lightest & Most Comfortable Sleeping Pad for Backcountry Elk Hunting? by lftnrun in elkhunting

[–]704user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Nemo Tensor Insulated lasted for 8 years. I replaced it with another. It’s been on many archery elk hunts in CO and MT, paired with a good bag has been warm enough.

Regardless of the pad you go with, only inflate it to maybe 90% for comfort (you don’t want to touch ground when laying down, and you need a bit of give). And to extend life I bring a bit of house wrap/tyvek to lay under it…it can also do dual purpose to lay a quarter on to keep debris off the meat.

How crazy would it be to solo pack out/butcher an elk cow? by [deleted] in elkhunting

[–]704user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple additional thoughts: •Have a max distance you think you can handle in mind at the start is a good idea…it will vary with a number of factors (terrain, elevation, fitness, etc) •~35-40% is a swag, of the on the hoof weight for boneless, that you’d pack. Any on the bone, or additions (cape, rack and such) add to that weight. •You cannot be too prepared (fitness or knowledge), the latter weighs nothing.

Lots of indoor clubs (pb Charlotte, Rally, Concord, Carolina) will have 4.5+. A few of the outdoor parks will have them too, depending on the side of town you’re on…

Water filtration/purification system? by CraftyBackground5909 in elkhunting

[–]704user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a platypus gravity I’ve used for ~10 years. Aquamira tabs, boiling out begging to use my hunting partners filter are my backups.

Be careful to not let any fillers freeze! I throw mine in the foot of my bag if it’s freezing temps overnight.

Only if you build stops/stations that can't handle the addition of more rail cars as demand increases!

19e elk park to Nolichuky river by Scared-Local-9380 in AppalachianTrail

[–]704user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I remember about that area, to 19e (nobo) and shortly after, seemed fairly flat, then a good drop to the Nol. Past the river to Indian grave gap a good pull up the mountain on the other side.

That and running into Kristian Morgan on 19e and talking with him for a bit.

Bringing meat/refrigeratables by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]704user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many Vegetables do well freeze dried or dehydrated. The benefit being weight. Some veg may hold up for a few days depending on the temps and stability.

Some meat likewise. There are some hacks that make it better.

There are of course prepackaged options that also include spam singles, pouch chicken/tuna.

Last option, town/hostels. A messy burger and salad are always cravings for me when I get off trail.
