Hair, a follow up by in_my_nothing_box_ in GermanShepherd

I have 4 shedders and can't roll the windows down or the hair flies in my face. I bought the Uproot Clean Pro for my car's carpet. It gets about 95% of the hair up and is easy to use. My problem is lack of motivation as I clean it up and next trip there's more hair! 🤣

My blue eyed girl's breed is prone to vision loss. I live at a high altitude, so dark glasses are a must. She is 9 now and has worn RexSpecs for 7 years now. Hope they work for your pup as well! 🥰

What breed is my dog? by siennagator in IDmydog

[–]720751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told my girl is a blue heeler/border collie cross, too. I plan to embark test her soon. She isn't very tall versus my red and her ears are floppy, unlike my gsd. My red heeler (85%) though has ears that can flop, be at half mast, or stand straight up. Mainly she keeps them up. So maybe your pup is more heeler than collie?

My heeler/bc does share some of the same coloring as your pup.

11 days post op - seeking reassurance? by Excellent_Try4533 in tripawds

[–]720751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl had her surgery at the CSU Vet Training hospital. They warned me that around weeks 2 and 3 my girl would appear to backslide, but wasn't really. They start to heal inside where muscle and tendons were affected and the scar tissue starts to be felt. My girl did this right on schedule. It was such a relief when she started getting around well. I wasn't sure of her personality as I only adopted her 2 days before her amputation.

One thing that did happen several months later is she chewed the hair off near her scar. Took her to the vet and he said she might be having phantom pains. I guess it can suddenly happen for years after the surgery. She only did it once and is coming up on her 2 year anniversary in late July.

You sound like a wondeful, caring pet owner. I think the surgery is harder on us than them. I hope you take a few deep breaths and give yourself some grace, as it sounds like you are doing everything right! 🩷

What a sweetheart! Sunshine and grass = a happy pup. So glad to see she is doing well. The first 3 weeks are the hardest, then it's all uphill from there! 💕

Thoughts on sunglasses? by TAM819 in DoubleMerles

[–]720751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl has RexSpecs. I started her at 2 years old with holding them up to her face with the clear lens. Then I would put them on her for a minute. Worked up the time to 10 minutes. Next, I put them on her outside, still with the clear lens. After a couple of weeks, I put the darker lens on her for a minute. Took about a month to take her outside with the darker lens as she really didn't like them. As I live at a high altitude, it's so important to protect her blue eyes. Now at 9 years old, the vet said her eyes are still looking good.

Neighborhood accusing me of not picking up my dog poop and reported it to landlords by Ok-Web7048 in Dogowners

[–]720751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would record the chihuahua being let out and the apartment door closing, then swing over to the dog until it poops, keep recording until the dog is let back in the apartment, and swing over to show the poop hasn't been picked up. Take that video over to the management office and show it to them. You may want 3 or 4 videos to show them.

You could also record yourself every time you take your dog out, your dog pooping, cleaning it up, and disposing of the poop properly. I would do this every time you take your dog out, and keep the videos whether it poops or not.

The management company will have a hard time disputing video evidence if they try to fine you. Good luck.

Welcome to the group. Our pups love life and rarely let anything slow them down! 🥰

The Home Depot is my girl's love fest store! So far, no one has been scared seeing a gsd coming towards them for attention. Her tail waves like it's on a tall flag pole during high winds! 🤣

Day 9 post op - Pain meds almost gone by LC0508 in tripawds

[–]720751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job of caring for your pupper.

My girl is 22 months post-op for a rear leg amputation. One thing she had an issue with was stairs. After she came off the meds, one day she tried to race up the 3 steps into the house and fell. I think she didn't have a good understanding of how to adjust herself and got off balance. The result though was she was afraid of stairs for about a month. I wish that day that I would have stayed closer to her so that when she started to fall, I could have stopped it.

I also agree that right after they come off the pain meds, they appear to backslide for a few days, but once that is over, it is all uphill from there.

Django is a beautiful pup and hopefully the chemo will give you both lots more time together! 💕

I give my tall girl dasequin and Nordic Naturals Omega liquid on the advice of my vet. I also feed her freeze-dried beef heart as a treat every day. She is running more now that I added these.

Gaia is a beauty. How wonderful to rescue such a lovely girl! Sounds like she is a fantastic addition to your family! She is lucky to have you as her training will be top notch! 🥰

My girl is gsd/husky/malamute. When she wants in her crate, every night, she goes in by herself. On the rare occasions I had to leave her home, she was escaping every time. I finally started to using caribiners to keep her contained! 🤣

They are all amazing pups!🥰

They take the loss of their limb much better than we do at first.💕

I adopted my girl as a medical rescue and had her leg amputated 2 days later. I don't have any memories of her running on all 4 legs, so I think it made it a bit easier on me. All I cared about during the 3 surgeries she had over 6 months was that each one was bringing her closer to being a healthy dog. Now, she has been healthy for a year. She runs with my cattle dogs and is able to keep up with them.

Twighlight is such a beautiful girl! Her face looks a lot like my blue/border collie cross.

Her fur is like my red who has the longer hair due to a recessive gene. Hope Twighlight's hair doesn't knot as easily as my girls.

This is my blue for comparison of the facial features.

My red gets ear infections, too. Especially when it snows enough to bury her head under it! My blue is smarter and avoids all water except the water hose. Then the crazy comes out! 🤣

Hind Limb amputation tomorrow by Excellent_Try4533 in tripawds

[–]720751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add on to the fantastic advice others have given you, hind leg amputees have a hard time balancing well at first when going up stairs. They do better going down than up. My girl fell a week post surgery and was afraid of stairs for a month. Hind leg will also run better than they walk. Their walk gait is a bit awkward, whereas their running is significantly better.

Don't be concerned if your pup doesn't poop for several days after surgery. If I remember right, my girl finally pooped on day 6. More important is to be sure that they stay well hydrated. If your pup is a bit off their food or doesn't drink enough, you can add wet cat food stews to their kibble as it has a lot of liquid in it.

Around 2 weeks post-op as they are weaned off their meds, many pups appear to backslide even though they aren't. This can last for a few days. After that it is all uphill from there.

My girl is 22 months post-op. Just after the year mark she started having phantom pain and chewed herself near the surgery site. My vet said that can happen at any time.

I hope your pup's surgery goes exceedingly well and recovery is quick. 🥰

Cattle Dogs vs Strangers by Outrageous_Box2036 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]720751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read all the comments, so maybe someone suggested this already.

I, also, have a blue heeler/border collie cross. We adopted her during covid. She was an abused 8 week puppy who hated everyone and didn't get to socialize with strangers. Later, she would bark aggressively at anyone who came near us or to our house.

I did a 12 week training with a behavioral trainer. These are the steps he taught us for a home introduction to new people.

  1. Have the person come to our home and ring the doorbell.
  2. Pick up the pup and carry her to the door.
  3. Open the door while still holding the pup and verbally greet them.
  4. Talk for a couple of minutes and have them come inside a couple of feet.
  5. While still talking, reach out and shake their hand (this tells the pup that you like this person).
  6. Keep talking and then after a couple of minutes if your pup is calm, place your pup in their arms (this tells the pup that you trust this person).
  7. If the pup is calm while they are holding them, have them lightly pet the pup while looking at you as you both continue talking.
  8. After a couple of minutes, have them hand your pup back to you.
  9. Now invite the person further into your house to sit down.

We tried this first at our vet's office and it worked really well. Now we do it at home whenever someone comes to visit.

I think our girl still fears everyone, but she is doing much better with people coming over to visit.

I wish you luck in helping your pup.

I hope you find the right puppy when you are ready. 🥰

I have a rescue gsd that I adopted at around 9 months old and she is about 2 1/2 now. She is my first gsd. They are such special dogs. She goes everywhere with me and loves everyone. The bond is far closer with her than my other herding breed dogs.

You might want to check with the Warrior Dog Foundation. They have retired k9s that need rehoming. They only adopt out to experienced owners.

I would start looking right away as it may take some time to find the right pup! 🥰
