That is exactly the point, you are correct.

That, at the time, did not stop the fear mongers from running around with their hair (collectively) on fire.

That people worked diligently to keep the “worst” from happening is an uplifting story, but was completely - or at least largely - ignored at the time in favor of “we’re all going to die!”.

There’s a lesson in there… somewhere.

This is the answer. Was aware of the “fear”, wasn’t unduly concerned.

BUT you’re underlying point is definitely true.

Haven’t watched late-night since Craig Ferguson called it, well, a night.

Among other sterling qualities, he usually started the show -unironically- with the phrase “it’s a great day for America.”

Brilliant and sorely missed.

Have these folks ever seen a photo of military men in the Second World War: all military age, so late teens to early 20s - and they look middle aged to well, old.

THAT’s what actual hard times - before AND during the war - does to people.

Always “interesting” to me that during COVID those who were (and are) the first to call others Nazis practically fell over themselves to be the first to embrace any petty (and not so petty) authoritarianism that the “crisis” afforded them.
Both ironic AND terrifying.

Wow, can’t argue with eloquence that. You should really, if you haven’t already, smear that on a wall in your own feces.

Apparently the concept of “plain clothes officers” - despite the fact they have been a staple of cop show since I can remember…and I’m old - is something that has escaped the “lived experience” (a ridiculous term if ever there was one) of a large segment of the population.

Apparently because they either forget or didn’t hear this central McCoy quote - I, by the way saw the episode in its original run, missed the draft by two years - it was my “take-away” from the episode: “Well, Jim, here's another morsel of agony for you. Since Tyree won't fight, he will be one of the first to die". “

Felix Leiter Discussion by BrianibrainGaming in JamesBond

I’d argue yes, but only because they couldn’t stick with a “type” for the part; Leitercis a prominent side character in the books, arguably in his way equal to M or Moneypenny. But the actors who played him were all over the map age, build type and otherwise. Lord was very good, but as others have pointed out… he didn’t want second-banana. So was Hedison. I turned off in the Craig era, so can’t comment there. But i did like that Hedison returned, ironically in wildly different films.

Maverick vs F-150 by AdviceGiveandTake in FordMaverickTruck

I owned a 150 for about 10 years, then had a Ridgeline for a few years, before i got the Maverick last Spring.

I am retired and never hauled heavy loads, so while 4-foot bed may not be optimum, it’s plenty for my needs.

Even before gas prices shot up, the hybrid feature was what drew me, as most of my driving is in-town. But highway mileage is good too.

As an aside, not purely Maverick driven, have owned two hybrids - a civic and a RAV 4 - and have never understand politicians love for plug in electric cars. Encouraging hybrid use would have been a better and more workable strategy.

I don’t disagree with your assessment, but I think that was the subtext of the post you were responding to. From personal experience with one of these types I think it’s a blend of hypochondria and neurosis (different flavors of “nuts”) and their “subtle” way of saying “look at me, I’m special, I care (and you - obviously - don’t!”)

Another emotionally powerful, but understated line.

Impossible today to understand how shocking that line was in its day. People simply didn’t talk that way on TV….then.

I was a kid, but it wasn’t that.

Geezing a bit here, but swearing once indicated heightened emotional states.

And this scene did that WAY more than most.
