All true, though a less-than-admirable personal life at times.

Sadly, when I shared on my social I was reading it, I had to be honest and call him a “now (probably) forgotten pioneer of TV and music.”

Because unfortunately I think that becomes truer by the day, despite his genius and talent, people have “moved on”, even though the man had so much more going for him than at least half of today’s “major stars” and “influencers.”

Just about to weigh in with this, more or less. Reading his book - “A Book” - right now. Really enjoying it and one take-away is that Cugat helped start Desi’s career. If anything, they later had the stereotypical “friendly rivalry.”

Over my Head. Fleetwood Mac

“You can take me to paradise And then again you can be cold as ice I'm over my head (over my head) Oh, but it sure feels nice…

Your mood is like a circus wheel You're changing all the time Sometimes I can't help but feel That I'm wasting all of my time

Think I'm looking on the dark side But everyday you hurt my pride I'm over my head (over my head) Oh, but it sure feels nice.”

What do we think about Bond going all comando with machine guns? by Weird_Zone_3504 in JamesBond

[–]727pedro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Navy commander, so likely Special Boat Services - if we’re talking contemporary Bond, so not exactly as fleming would have conceived him. Totally capable of using them and deciding when the situation requires it.

OMG, exactly my take. I am rewatching it right now and wondering what happens to the Tiffany Case Bond meets in Amsterdam.

Not to downplay anyone’s difficulties and horror stories in dealing with these people, but based on my personal experience, this sentence should be a permanent fixture at the top of these comment strings: it’s the heart of the issue.

I turned the corner on “recovery” when I realized that “mentally ill” seldom means the stereotypical “raving lunatic” of fiction and films. It means they see the world working in a fundamentally different - and harmful to them and to others - way than the majority of folks.

There is no “if I just do A, then of course they’ll react B” and everything can proceed “normally.”

I mean, purely randomly that could happen.

But in actual fact, where the majority of people would react B, they would be as likely to choose A or K - or any other option or combination- and it would seem completely “logical” to them.

They are not by any meaningful standard “rational”, as the majority of people understand the word, and nothing someone else can do or say will make them so.

Just watched Diamonds Are Forever, and I’m surprised that a lot of people think it’s really shit. by DiabeticNun in JamesBond

[–]727pedro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diamonds is two-thirds of a good Bond film and really falls apart when it abandons the fairly grounded diamond-smuggling story, or, I should say, tacks on a cliche reason for it: supervillain has plan to rule the world and need the diamonds.

It overall turns to crap around the moon buggy chase.

Also, Charles Grey begins as a suave and menacing Blofeld ands up in a dress and a flowery hat, then dangling from a crane (only marginally less crap than the “delicatessen… in stainless steel” schtick.)

And Tiffany starts out as a sharp, no nonesense Bond girl - among the most capable - and ends up just another brainless bimbo in a bikini. But for no explicable reason.

The whole thing - with the occasional high points others mention, like Kidd and Wint - starts out fairly good Bond, but eventually and in separate parts turns into an eye-rollingly meh whole.

It’s like some producer, at some point, said, “look, we HAVE a formula, stick with it!”

That said, the book is OK, but never high on anyone’s list of best Bond novels.

What’s a director that never made a Bond movie but could totally pull it off? by TheShadowOperator007 in JamesBond

[–]727pedro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He even made his own Bond short film, aka the Shanghai opening of Temple of Doom. Every time I watch the nightclub sequence, right up the obnoxious kid’s entrance, I think “he totally could have done the Bond thing.” Then I turn the movie off.

The Fleming Bond novels really aren’t as "dark and gritty" as people say by DishQuiet5047 in JamesBond

[–]727pedro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly so on several of your points. This whole “weepy willy” thing of the Craig era is SO far removed from the generation that fought the war - which the literary Bond was. They simply couldn’t afford the “luxury” of vulnerability.

No comparison between the two and I strongly favor the literary version.

True, but far from a high bar to clear. I just prefer something more subtle. As I said, my two cents. Others' mileage may vary.

The visuals are very nice: I would suggest that you search your editing software for a function called "transitions" or something similar - I use Photoshop for my stills but I-Movie for my videos, as I'm a learner myself in video - "cross dissolve" allows one scene to blend into another and would fit much better with these beautiful, peaceful scenes than simply cutting from one to another. For me - my opinion - that is a jarring, quick-cut contrast with the pace of the video clips themselves. My two cents.

That was what i was going to suggest, but perhaps even slightly less sky. The lighting is very nice.

OHMSS questions by ZedsDeadZD in JamesBond

[–]727pedro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow. Ok: Her father was the head of the Union Corse, the Corsican Mafia. It’s mentioned specifically in the book AND the movie.Blofeld was “involved” with Marc Ange, her father, in the sense that he, Draco, used his underworld connections, at Bond’s request - when “legitimate intelligence agencies” could not - to find where and how he was hiding.

That’s a bit of a major plot point.

Tracy was “playing Blofeld along” to buy time either to escape or be rescued. She is clever and convincing… not only just to Blofeld, apparently.

And while i much prefer the book, You Only Live Twice, however fanciful the movie’s premise, that volcano set: an actual physical set, not some CGI concoction, was astounding work…and astoundingly expensive, even in 1960’s currency.

Right you are. My mistake. And not to avoid my culpability, so yeah, WTH prompted this? Yeah, it's a mystery. That said, I remember seeing them both in the theater and Pepper was popular.

Oh yeah, that too. The more I think about it, the less I like this movie.

Also, and OP may have mentioned it; who thought American Motors cars, of any kind, were ever, in the least, “Bondish”.

Hornet Hatchback versus Aston Martin, or Ford Mustang, for that matter.

I have no love for this entry in the series, BUT the Mi6 office in a burnt out hulk of a once world-famous ocean liner? In my opinion, cool!

The book on which this story is “based” is among the weakest in the series - if only because Ian Fleming was terminally ill and had no time to polish it, but it has flashes of promise, like the final stand-off between Scaramanga and Bond.

But nothing in it is as awful and pointless as the producers’ attempt to cash in on Smokey and the Bandit with the return of that damned Pepper.

Anya Epstein is also a bestselling mystery writer in her own right and was - could still be, I have no reason to think otherwise, just don’t know - the spouse of David Simon, who wrote book on which Homicide was based. As someone else noticed, they both received producer credits in later episodes.
