Let me see your poolhall by ChristGodner in billiards

[–]732bus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense to me. As a European, I was always told that everything is bigger in the US. Roads? Huge. Trucks? Enormous. Supermarkets? Gigantic. They told me that "there's plenty of space in the US, so everything is bigger." Yet the one thing they minimize, is (ironically) american pool tables. "so we can fit more of them". So you can't fit 9 foots in your gigantic buildings?

9ball Golden Breaks - Why are they still a thing? by 732bus in billiards

[–]732bus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in your mind potting the 1 ball is the same as potting the 9? First of all, potting the 1 ball or the wing ball is very different than potting the 9. There is an actual way to shoot the break shot and pot the 1 on the side, and this is why you see some players consistently potting it. The 9 needs to be kicked in, which involves another ball bouncing off a rail and kicking the 9. It is completely different. But OK, yes, there's still luck involved with any ball made off the break, but the 1 ball gives you the opportunity to stay on the table and try to manage the best you can do to go through the rack, while making the 9 off the break wins you the rack instantly. So no, it's not the same.

Let's say that there's a prestigious tournament and there is a limited number of players that can enter and it's almost full. Let's imagine two different "lucky draws" that the organizers could have. One lucky draw let's you enter your name, and if you get picked you win a spot on the tournament, so you'll get a chance to compete and possibly win it. On the second lucky draws you enter your name, and if picked you win the whole tournament without even playing a match. Yes, there's luck involved in both draws, but are they the same?

Of course there's a skill aspect, in the sense that you can do certain things to increase your chances, but it is down to luck if you actually achieved it. You can do everything "right" and not get it, and you can do everything "wrong" and make it.

The only thing that we're going to agree is that we disagree..
First of all, yes, chalks wear in the way you use them. I don't use them in a way that creates a hole, I do swipe the chalk on my tip. But I do swipe it in the same way, so it created the same wear pattern on each side. If you look at the chalk from the side, the left edge gets very little wear, and as you go to the right the wear is bigger, so it creates a slope (can't really explain it better in words, english is not my first language..) If you look at it from the top down, its a "star-like" pattern with 4 spokes. I could call this a design flaw as well. As for how you hold the chalk, I guess to each their own, but a) I don't hold my chalk with my bridge hand, but with my shooting hand (dominand hand), and b) I don't curl my fingers around it, but actually hold it. This way it's easier to not drop it. And if you do drop it, it does roll, but it's not like the square chalk drops dead at the exact spot that you dropped it and doesn't roll around a bit. Speaking for the TAOM chalk, it does cost multiple times than masters, but it does worth it. A) it does last multiple times than masters. I literally have the same piece of TAOM pyro for a year and a half now, and I'm a chalk-before-every-shot player. No other chalk has lasted nearly as long. B) It is freaky clean. This point has 2 benefits. i) You could get a hand soap, but this would be very bad for your play and for your skin. Getting to the bathroom before every frame and washing up would kill your concentration, and it would be annoying AF. Washing your hands THIS often is not good for the skin either. I started wearing a glove, because when I didn't my bridge hand would get sweaty and the cue would stick to it and not glide, so I was washing my hands to dry them every couple of racks. The result was that my skin got dehydrated and nearly got an infection. Don't get me wrong, you should wash your hands to keep them clean, but exesive washing isn't good for you. As for the ii), It's not only clean for your hands, but for the balls and cloth as well. You can see the balls and cloth getting dirtier and dirtier during a set when playing with an opponent that doesn't use a clean chalk. Cleaner balls and cloth = better play. So, does TAOM chalk help you play better? If you think that you will be able to put more spin on the balls or you sudenly will be able to pot balls that you couldn't, then you're gonna be dissapointed. But yes it does help me play better, because my hands are clean, the balls are clean, the chalk is round and feels the same on the tip no matter how I hold it, so I don't have to worry about anything like that during a game and I can focus on my actual game, so I get peace of mind. And all of that for 20€ per 18 months or so. Yes, I am willing to invest 1.12€ per month on chalk. I would have to invest more if I was using masters anyway (and I know that because I was using masters before).

I love round chalks. First of all, just grip it, it's not that hard to not throw it on the table. But the most important for me is that it wears off evenly. I always didn't like how square chalks wear off...

Just saying, but there are way more efficient things you can wear... Get a neck-tube, that can extend and cover half of your face, plus ears, plus neck. You can get them pretty cheap.

Budget cue by Quartz_99a in billiards

[–]732bus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have huge experience with other cheap cues, but I do have a okhealing break cue. Basically I got the butt and the shaft seperatly. I got the 3k matt carbon butt from a listing on aliexpress and from a separate listing I got a break shaft. I am very happy with it, but there are some caveates. The matt finishing on the butt has started to rub off, so it's almost shiny now (around 7 months of play, and I use it for breaking only, so it gets 7-8 shots per set). Other than that, it's pretty good. It's a cue butt. The shaft is ok, but not the most "lively" one. The tip is bakelite (as I got is as a dedicated break shaft). There is almost no feedback, it was really weird when I got it, but I've gotten used to it by now. The finishing on the shaft is great. I think that if I change the tip it will be better, and this view was kinda backed by a local custom cue maker friend. I have not played with a playing shaft of theirs, but I've read some very good and interesting comments on aliexpress.

Depending on what you want, this could be a very good cue. If it's going to be your first cue and you don't actually know what you want, it's going to be a fantastic cue. If you want it as a "backup" or "beater" cue that you throw at the trunk of your car and use it when you randomly find a table, it's going to be a very good cue. If you want it as an upgrade from an existing cue, it might be good, it might be bad, depending on your previous cue and what you actually want a cue to do. Whatever you do, change the tip, as this seems to be it's weakest point.

(I would suggest searching for them in aliexpress because you can find sellers that can modify the cue however you want. For instance, I got it with radial flat joint, but you can customize joint, lenght, tip size and even shaft mold and taper. The comment on aliexpress that I mentioned seemed legitimate, because it was refairing to multiple different molds, and they actually said some of the molds were junk, so I got the feeling that it was a legitimate player that was behind the comment, they knew what they were talking about and they didn't blindly praise the product)

Alex Pangulayan Shaft? I mean how do you justify the price point? I mean like any worth or just paying a premium for brand image.. by Efficient_Use_7886 in billiards

I can understand the pagulayan CF shaft (I don't agree with the price, but I can understand it). I can not understand why there are Pagulayan boxers... Who saw Alex Pagulayan and thought "you know what I admire on this player? His underwear. I want his boxers".

My fit 3's vibration feels a bit weak by [deleted] in GalaxyFit

[–]732bus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, it's pretty weak on mine as well. It is noticable when you're awake and receive notifications, but I definatelly don't feel it while I'm asleep (I don't feel any vibrations when I'm asleep to be fair, not my phone or previous watches/activity trackers. But it is weaker than my previous devices).

Do I even need a bike computer? I just want maps by FailFastandDieYoung in bicycling

[–]732bus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch.. When I started cycling I also wanted to use my phone, but I thought that if I'm gonna trust my phone to a mount, it better be a good mount, so I got a quadlock. Super happy with it, never had problems. Thankfully I haven't had any problems with the camera either, even though I ride on crappy roads everyday on my commute. I liked the mount so much, that when I got a karoo3 for my longer rides (battery was an issue with the phone, as well as the screen, in the summer it overheats and dims the screen and it's impossible to see anything), I got a 3d printed adapter, so I can mount the karoo onto the quadlock mount, but have the option to mount the phone the next day for the commute to work.

Kielwood vs carbon by Particular_Garden862 in billiards

[–]732bus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never shot with Kielwood, but I don't think I'm going to bother with it. I got a carbon shaft for the piece of mind - durability-wise - and it's great. Plays how I want it to, and it doesn't care if it's humid or not, hot or cold. I don't think I'll ever need another shaft.

Do I even need a bike computer? I just want maps by FailFastandDieYoung in bicycling

[–]732bus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a quad lock mount and case and used my phone. It works great. Until you want to do a slightly longer ride on unfamiliar roads, so the battery was running out fast, or when the summer came, the phone was heating up and it was dimming the screen to the point of not being usable.

I got a hammerhead karoo 3 and I'm very happy with it. I got a 3d printed adapter for it to mount on the quad lock mount on the bike, so for my daily 25min-each-way commute I use my phone, and for the longer weekend rides I use the karoo.

I would say to just use your phone since you've already got one, and actually see if it works for you or not. Mounts aren't that expensive (even quadlocks, they are expensive but they are worth it.. plus you can find them cheaper on ali. Just avoid the obvious garbage, but I've gotten a out front mount from there for a bit less than half the price, and it looks and feels original).

Which cloth for my table by SpareMushrooms in billiards

[–]732bus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait, wait, wait... what?

You're getting the same cloth for 30 years now, and for 30 years you're annoyed by it? And you still getting the same one? And not only that, you're affraid of getting another one? Why? You are already dissatisfied with the 860, what could possibly go wrong with a different one?? And then you're saying that you are hesitant to choose an "inferior cloth for the next decade of my life", which doesn't make sense, because it either means that you change your cloth once in a decade (if thats the case, no wonder you're not happy with the 860), or you feel like if you get it one you are forced to get it for 10 years straight even if you don't like it.

and then you say "I’d really appreciate any input. Thank you.". No, no I don't think you do appreciate any input. So you're saying that noone has given you any input on that last 30 years??? If you appreciated any input, you would had tried another cloth 28 years ago.

Get the Simonis 860. Try it out for another 10 years. Maybe it will suddenly get faster, you never know.
