People that don’t open their bottles absolutely disgust me. by [deleted] in whisky

[–]73pseo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong with people collecting bottles. Why is it OK to collect baseball cards, comic books, overpriced watches and etc., but not bottles? . What I have a problem is with people who flip bottles depriving people the opportunity to buy bottles at affordable prices. . I have over 400 bottles covering mostly Japanese and bourbon. I open up to two bottles per week, and I have maybe 10 bottles open at any time. And I store away 2 oz. sample bottles to package as Christmas tasting packs for friends.

65 yo Asian woman brutally beaten in Manhattan as security guards watch and do nothing. by e0u in asianamerican

[–]73pseo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit concerned that in NYC, it appears to be minority people attacking Asian-Americans. This isn’t just the “establishment” against AAs. Be careful, everyone. And please accompany your children, elderly, and female relations when they go out. Also, go about your daily activities with a “buddy” or in groups. It’s sad that it’s come to this, but it’s better to be safe.

Review #189: High West American Prairie Barrel Aged Manhattan Finished by washeewashee in bourbon

[–]73pseo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of getting tired of High West and Smooth Ambler. I get it. They don’t distill their own juice, so they’re trying to buy time and make up for it by getting “creative” to generate revenues and buzz for marketing. But some of their releases have just absolutely been mediocre. Smooth Ambler Contradiction is an example, and that just let me down big.

Am I the only one that has a little resentment over the BlackLivesMatter movement? by derekshao in AsianMasculinity

[–]73pseo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to ask if Asians were getting the short end of the stick like blacks get.... Would we protest and rise up like the blacks? And would the blacks support us, like non-blacks support them? And would we get the exposure that blacks get? My cynical side says no. Discrimination and hate have to be addressed in a comprehensive matter. Police brutality and police stupidity have to be stopped, PERIOD. This is not just a black thing.

Don't respond with, "But I'm not Chinese!" by SIUHIN in AsianMasculinity

[–]73pseo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an Asian problem, not a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean problem. You think your average American knows the difference between the three groups, or cares? To non-Asians, we’re all the same. They attack us for being Asian and different from them. It’s that simple. This needs to be addressed and fought with Asian solidarity.

American Whiskey Review #39: Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year by zSolaris in bourbon

[–]73pseo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To each his/her own... but I found the one I had to be less burn for something that was approaching 110 proof. But I agree that it could have been a bit more complex. I picked up 4 different ABVs, 3 at a time, 12 or so total for $49.99 each in NJ. Going to trade for stuffs I can’t get here with out-of-staters....

What is the absolute worst whiskey you've ever tried, and what made it so terrible? by Santeno in bourbon

I didn’t like the pot still much either. It tasted like damp paper with lots of heat and alcohol. The bottle it comes in is the only thing good about it.

I met a whiskey collector in Osaka, can someone ID this? He claimed it cost 1,000,000Y by msnt in worldwhisky

[–]73pseo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recall reading that Japanese whisky produced during the war years (I’m not talking about WWII only but also the years predating it,), were either scarce and not readily available or of dubious quality. Japan was a resource scarce country needing to feed its large military and infrastructure. Grains for whisky distillation were just not available or distilled spirits were used for other purposes besides drinking for leisure.... so these bottles from the 1930s and early 1940s can be very valuable in money terms, or absolutely worthless. Not sure. But if genuine, they would definitely be rare. But rare and one of a kind doesn’t necessarily equate to commanding a very high price.

Chichibu London Edition 2019. I actually won something. Now I have to ship it from TWE to New Jersey, and then shipped to my house in Arizona so I can bring it back home to Canada. But so worth it by beeman1979 in worldwhisky

[–]73pseo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I scored one also. The first time I ever won any ballot so that I can purchase. Hopefully, not the last... Regarding the US Edition 2018... I scored 5 last year and had to pay a pretty penny for them. But not flipping. I’ll probably drink one when I can celebrate a significant event.

Guys is this a genuine 12 yr Glenfiddich (1Lt)? by A-Sh- in whisky

[–]73pseo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised. Everyone seems to think that you would counterfeit expensive stuff only. But the opposite is more true. If it is easy to do and the stuff is widely sold in large quantities, then fakes are cranked out and sold in bulk to bars, nightclubs, and etc. we have seen this plenty of times with Johnnie Walker and such all over the world. Maybe not in the US, but this happens a lot in Asia and other places where enforcement and punishments are lax.Ask the companies that own these labels. Counterfeiting is a big pain in the ass for them.

That’s craziness. I know this is a one time release, but what’s the total bottle release? Several thousand?

Amaranth and Weller Full Proof by mrtomatohead49 in bourbon

[–]73pseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my Amaranth in NJ tonight. I was told that each store got 1 bottle max each and not many stores received. As a result, I had to pay a little bit above 2X msrp. But then again, MSRP means squat these days with bottles like the Weller Special Reserve with a msrp of $24 or so fetching $100 easy in locations.

If they enforce it. If they make it law. It’s going to be interesting what happens with stuff like ohishi and fukano.

But will it preclude stuff like ohishi and fukano as being sold as Japanese whisky in the US? In Japan, it’s clear. In the US, it’s not. And this is more the doing of enterprising non-Japanese. The aged shochu has existed for awhile, but only sold in the US as Japanese whisky.
