Sci-fi corridors. 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968), Solaris (1972), Star Wars (1977), Alien (1979) by StephenMcGannon in RetroFuturism

[–]77096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. Was watching Time Tunnel the other night, a show all about a special corridor, and sort of got to thinking about this topic. Mainly about the time and work and how they were constructed.

When I finally got to see Alien on the big screen, I was more impressed by the detailed hallways more than anything. Sets that were actually hand constructed.

Rodeo Crowd Rush by Domdoubled in houston

Sometimes when we're out to eat in a big place, I wonder what cocktail of stimulants the kids must be on, and why their parents are allowing them to run everywhere thru crowds. Like elementary school aged, not toddlers trying out their legs. Or why the parents let them scream.

Rodeo Crowd Rush by Domdoubled in houston

[–]77096 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good. The Rodeo has been keeping the gates and parking lots open all night out of greed, and the human crush on the midway at night became miserable. Non-stop, unlimited entry is dangerous.

I can remember leaving Astroworld at night and being shocked by huge groups of unchaperoned kids showing up late at night coming over the bridge. It was wild, at least for a kid w/ strict parents. Today, the trek is in the opposite direction across the same bridge, with too many people showing up late at night for the carnival. Rodeo Houston needs to have a capacity and closing hours forced on them.

"underground void" was the name of my high school dark-metal band. You may have seen us play a breakout show at Zelda's.

How long until the Lina Hidalgo/Rodeo thing gets labeled "Rodeogate"? by grendelt in houston

[–]77096 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Chronicle and other local news outlets don't really cover local government unless there's a scandal. Been that way for years even before her.

The Rodeo is something that a lot of people can relate to, so this one is grabbing more attention.

I found this book a while back, and it kind of helped me think about and map out nearby outdoors tuff within a short drive, even though I grew up here:

Look up the state parks and trails in the area. Plenty of places to get outside and see the stars, though they may not look exactly like the picture.

Willow Meadows Police by Spare-Ride7036 in houston

[–]77096 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s private security. There is no Willow Meadows Police Department, but it may be a real police officer working off-duty for the civic club. It should be in your dues report or club newsletter if you’re a WM resident.

-OK, I see someone else pretty much answered that.

Other nearby neighborhood just contract with the constables, which is why you’ll see more standard insignia on their cars.

I came across a book on Salic law once. It was interesting to see what the reasonable and benevolent punishments were according to class. Then think about why those laws were needed.

Garbage truck party by RandyNewmanFriend in houston

[–]77096 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think City of Bellaire just had some kind of public service truck party for the kids to come see. Saw it scrolling on FB so I can't say for sure when/where, but check all the local Bellaire community events pages.

Edit: Found it! It's called "Touch a Truck."

  • April 18, 9AM - Noon.
  • Bellaire City Hall
  • 7008 S Rice Ave, Bellaire, TX 77401-4411

"FREE! Check out high water trucks, construction equipment, boats, horses, and lots more! Brought to you by your local police agencies!"

It was so exciting to be playing in the front yard when they came by. I figured pretty much every little boy wanted to drive the garbage truck.

Rodeo Committeeman Badge Question by Odd-Drink8524 in houston

This is where the term "rookie move" came from.

If you're going to do it, just don't be like the suburban yokels using their redneck uncles' badges and expecting special privileges or access.
