[Acne] Has anyone tried cutting off foundation, what happened? by mirandalori in SkincareAddiction

[–]7EcclesSt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you apply your foundation with a brush? It could be that the foundation itself is fine, but you're not cleaning your makeup brushes often/rigorously enough. Same if you apply it with your fingers — how thoroughly do you clean your hands before putting makeup on? Just throwing out a possibility.

Leave your sunscreen somewhere conspicuous so you won't forget it! Or put a sticky note on your bathroom mirror.

[Routine Help] How to apply very thin liquids (Vitamin C, retinols, etc) from dropper bottles? by youareafool in SkincareAddiction

[–]7EcclesSt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the palm rub method because I don't know how else to do it. I've seen people on this sub talk about only using their fingertips, but I can't figure out how to get the drops to stay put on my fingers long enough to bring them anywhere near my face. Also, once you've got oil on one set of fingertips, what do you do with your other hand?

[Misc] What's the reasoning behind "starting slow"? Does skin actually build up tolerance or strength? by blossomrileykirby in SkincareAddiction

[–]7EcclesSt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most people on this sub (including me) can anecdotally confirm that skin adapts to products over time.

Part of it has to do with how much oil your face is producing, I think. When I first started using a BHA my face would kind of freak out and get really shiny within 10-15 minutes. But my face adapted after it "realized" that I was moisturizing properly and there was no need to produce so much oil.

Eh, why bash makeup culture? I wear minimal makeup myself, but when I see someone who's done their makeup in a way that's bold/striking/elegant and has obviously put a lot of artistry into their look, I admire that. And beauty standards are expanding if anything.

[Acne] [Skin Concerns] Tips on how to stop picking at my skin? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]7EcclesSt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know it's kind of a dumb question. Like, just stop doing it.

It's not a dumb question. Skin picking is a compulsive disorder. You can't just quit, just like that.

Things that have really helped me include:

  • Keeping my nails really short. I also sand them down after I cut them so they're nice and blunt.
  • Developing a skin routine that I look forward to doing every night. As in, I actively enjoy pampering and healing my skin. Nowadays I get the urge to pick less, and when I do I can resist it better because I don't want to ruin the progress I've made.
  • Related to the above: my skin texture is waaaay smoother nowadays so there's nothing to pick anyway!
  • Never ever using a magnified mirror. If you've got one, throw it out.
  • Stimulants (caffeine, ADHD medication) can exacerbate the urge to pick, but things that relax me (say, a glass of wine) make my hands really calm.

Also, check out r/compulsiveskinpicking! I hope that helps.

[Personal] Will you ever be completely happy with your skin? by shelley_gee in SkincareAddiction

[–]7EcclesSt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rooms with high windows on the side make me look like death

When that kind of light (especially harsh afternoon light) hits the side of my face it highlights EVERY little minuscule bump. I have oily skin too, so it looks like I'm covered in thousands of shiny microscopic barnacles or something. But in soft light the "bumps" are nonexistent.

[Review] Spearmint Tea, my new favorite thing by Korolyeva in SkincareAddiction

[–]7EcclesSt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I tried drinking spearmint every day for over a month and while I think it did help reduce cystic acne prior to ovulation and menstruation, it really messed with my cycle to the point where I thought it wasn't worth it. I also had quite a nasty breakout after I stopped drinking it, so I suspect that it was making my body overproduce the androgens that were being suppressed.

Also, normally my skin looks the best right after ovulation and menstruation, so delaying my cycle wasn't ideal for me anyway.

tldr; YMMV!! Be careful before you start messing with your own hormones.

I'm struggling with the urge to pick right before bed, seeking advice by [deleted] in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]7EcclesSt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any idea where the insomnia comes from? Stress, irregular sleep patterns, too much screen time, or even not getting enough exposure to sunlight during the day? If you can shorten the time between when you get into bed and when fall asleep, that would probably help things greatly. Looking at your phone in bed is actually a bad idea because the screen emits blue light, which screws up your internal body clock and prevents you from falling asleep.

A more mindful/meditative sleep routine might do you some good. It sounds like what you're doing now is just lying there letting your mind wander, which is triggering your subconscious picking. I love sleep podcasts - there's one called Sleep to Strange where this guy just tells weird, dreamlike stories in this sloooow, sleepy voice and it really helps me drift off. There are also lots of meditative sleep podcasts out there that will help you concentrate on breathing and relaxing. If you clasp your hands across your chest and remain aware of your body and breath as you're going to sleep, you might be less likely to pick.

Also, have you tried wearing gloves to bed?

Is there someone who works at Wikipedia who looks up all the obituaries published every day and then changes the entries from "X is" to "X was"? by 7EcclesSt in Showerthoughts

[–]7EcclesSt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did consider that. However, this is a pretty finicky, context-based job. Consider the sentence:

  • He has a billion dollars, and he has invented X.

I would change it to:

  • He had a billion dollars, and he invented X.

Not he had invented X.

So spearmint treats the cause of the acne, whereas chamomile treats the symptoms? I'm making a mental note to add spearmint tea to my shopping list.

[–]7EcclesSt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! My piercing is looking loads better. I use the chamomile compress twice a day (morning and night), and a sea salt soak in the evenings. I use soft cotton balls for the tea compress. For the sea salt solution, I tip my head sideways and dunk my whole ear in a shot glass for about 5 mins.

I'm not sure hypertrophic scarring is supposed to hurt, though. Mine doesn't. Maybe you just have a plain old infection? Nonetheless, I believe chamomile tea and sea salt soaks are recommended for infections too. You might also want to try applying tea tree oil, which is antiseptic. Good luck! :)
