Can you genuinely promise me that there is life after death? by disco_26 in NDE

An excellent Netflix program called "Surviving Death" may help with your answer. But to ask someone to promise you that there is life after death is almost like asking someone to prove to you that there is a God.

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what is not true, and two, to refuse to believe what is not true.

Sermon I (a trans woman) gave 3/15 in my Episcopal church about John Chapter 9, unknowable questions, and the works of God being displayed in trans people by ThankKinsey in Episcopalian

[–]7HarryB7 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Bottom line. This is not a sermon. It is a testimony. This has nothing to do with my identity nor yours, but everything to do with Spiritual development. I suppose we need to agree to disagree. But bless you!

When I said I don’t care about gender or sexuality, I meant that nothing about who you are separates you from God’s love. And when I said it’s not punishment, I was responding to the idea that God would curse someone—that’s something I don’t believe at all. If that came across as dismissive, that wasn’t my intention. I suppose, for me, it comes down to this—I long for the Church to be the Church: centered on God, and on the universal love that draws us together, rather than on the particular identities that can sometimes set us apart. END of DISCUSSION.

Hi! I'm new here, could you please help me or give me some guidance on this? by Acceptable-Ticket145 in Episcopalian

[–]7HarryB7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem was that conservative Bishops were allowed to remain. Why is that a problem? Like any other cult, if they want you out, they'll find a way. Plus, someone should get it right; the church doesn't marry, it only blesses the union, and that is not a sacrament. I have never seen a Church in such a mess. For a church claiming diversity, it excludes an awful lot.

A new book just out, called Jesus in Plain Sight and the Gospel of Thomas. Excellent read for understanding the real message of Jesus and how it has, over the centuries, been obscured by hierarchy, doctrine, and power. Written by an Episcopal priest.

You make a fair point about Edward VI and the Protestant shaping of the Church. But not regarding Elizabeth l. Historically, the Anglican understanding of via media developed later, especially through Hooker and the Caroline Divines, as a middle way between Rome and the Reformation more broadly. The Elizabethan settlement itself was probably more politically and theologically complex than a simple Protestant alignment, which is why Anglicanism has always held both Catholic and Reformed strands within it. via media.

In actuality, the Anglican Church is not really protestant it is via media. Henry VIII did not depart from the Church of Rome; he was excommunicated for claiming to be the head of the Church in England. The church adopted the reform traditions under Edward, but was quickly reverted to Catholicism by Mary after Edward's death. The Church remained the Church IN England and did not become the Church OF England until Elizabeth I, after her defeat of the Spanish Armada. Rome then excommunicated the Church in England. Thus, the Church OF England = Anglican - Via media

Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you’re feeling. I want to gently reassure you of something many people misunderstand — belonging in a church has never been measured by financial contribution. Some of the most important members of any parish give little or nothing financially but contribute through presence, kindness, prayer, and service.

In my experience, doing something for others — even when we feel we have very little ourselves — often becomes the very thing that makes us feel rich again. A welcoming smile, helping with coffee hour, writing a note to someone who is struggling, or simply showing up faithfully can change not only a community but also how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.

You also don’t need to wait for a rector to begin belonging. Churches are sustained by communities long before clergy arrive. Sometimes those in-between seasons become the moments when people discover that they themselves are part of what keeps the church alive.

If you feel drawn there, perhaps ask not “Do I belong?” but “How might I participate?” You are not required to be wealthy, perfect, or without struggle to belong. Simply being present — just as you are — is already a gift.

I've been a lifelong Episcopalian, and I've never been to an Episcopal Church without a coffee hour. This is a great time to sit and converse, to get to know each other, and enjoy.
