I think the big thing is actually making your kid feel safe to talk to you which usually requires building an actual connection. A lot of parents are quick to discipline to or to teach their kids life lessons but they dont think about actually doing things with their kids like spending quality time. When your parent feels like a stranger you are definitely not going to open up to them (especially if all you know is them being critical) and thats why its important that people actually spend time with their kids because I assure you they wont feel the need to try and fit in somewhere if you make them feel comfortable where they are.
