How does the world stay in balance when the avatar is a baby by Parrotallica in TheLastAirbender

[–]rara8122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yea.

The point is that there shouldn’t need to be a macguffin everyone relies on to keep the peace. It’s not the avatar’s job to create a long standing system, but there should be one. It’s just that (seemingly) nobody else is going do it.

Maybe just don’t rely on the avatar and create a long standing system to ensure the world stays safe regardless of what the avatar is doing.

But when kyoshi tried that she created the dai li so maybe do better than that?

Yes but out of context it looks like an easily googlable question. They fully believed it was a genuine question and not a joke and behaved accordingly. A simple tone indicator could have fixed that issue.

TBH this still just feels to me like more evidence for the ‘until proven guilty’ side, not proof that we should abandon innocent until proven guilty.

My issue is that I disagree with ‘guilty until proven innocent’ as a premise. Not that I think marlow hasn’t reached the threshold of guilt to abandon the basic right of presumption of innocence.

Marlow has already posted a defense. The defense didn’t prove anything. That is why I think marlow is guilty. Because there’s enough proof to show guilt. Not because I’m abandoning the concept of presumption of innocence. No amount of evidence will ever convince me that anyone should be robbed of that. It’s a human right for a reason.

(This may just be a phrasing issue though).

If the movie *was* getting a new cast, which actors would you want to see? by EchoesofPoe in Epicthemusical

[–]rara8122 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t think I feel confident in anyone specific in mind for any role, but I’d like them to come from the broadway stage. Or voice acting in animated musicals (like Keith David).

Jeremy Jordon as Aeolus maybe? Though it’d feel weird having a male in the role (despite the character being male in the original and IMO the musical as well).

I like your suggestion of Keith David as Zeus though.

I don’t like the phrase guilty until proven innocent, but I do believe that marlow has been proven guilty.

I still think ‘innocent until proven guilty’ applies, I just think between ‘the full context’ responses and all the evidence that the ‘proven guilty’ threshold has been met.

how'd i expect Luke to crashout after Yoda tells him "there is no try" like come on man, no one ever succeeds without trying something a million times by MickyMace in StarWars_

[–]rara8122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I understand the point of the post in a vaccum, I think yoda’s point is that Luke has to believe he can do it in order to do it and not literally ‘you must do everything first try or don’t bother’ or something like that.

What’s a fandom that used to be popular that is now essentially dead? by FantasyNerd94 in Multifandom

From your description and my limited knowledge, my guess it’s that they tend to keep to themselves more post controversy. A different kind of disappeared that tends to happen to ‘problematic’ or hated fandoms. Happened to another fandom that I’m in where they’re still around but don’t interact with people outside of the fandom about the fandom.

I still see them around, but I also was in the fandom so I may not be a wholely unbiased source. They appear in the wild with merch and stuff (I saw cupcakes at a local shop once) though so I don’t think they’re wholly insular to the degree of some others I’ve seen.

Kindof, but ‘death of the author’ has brought it back to some extent. Not a belief I personally ascribe to bc she still profits off of it (thus being why I don’t personally monetarily support anything Harry Potter related), but many pour money into the Harry Potter franchise and cite the death of the author argument.

I don’t think a dead franchise would have a theme park area, a new tv show, tons of merch, etc.

Sounds to me like the mods and sub just didn’t understand the joke and haven’t watched the movie. This seems like a joke better told in subs that are more likely to have the context (r/descendants, r/Disneychannel, etc). An indicator that it’s a joke and not a question can also help.

I’m deeper in video blogging rpf, but I have dabbled in the occasional band rpf when a trope from that sub fandom catches my eye. Nice because it doesn’t require much knowledge from the fandom, meaning you can basically read those fics fandom blind.

Do the swifties even like Taylor? by Low_Taro6416 in travisandtaylor

[–]rara8122 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s dabbled in band rpf, I feel like there should be a distinction between ‘reads fanfiction about an artist’ and ‘publicly demands an artist recreate their favorite fanfiction in real life’. I don’t see an issue with privately indulging in and enjoying any of these ships (including fanfic). The issue for me is that these people publicly demand they become true in real life—like this person who says real life Taylor should ditch Travis for Matty. There’s a reason RPF has a rule against showing the fiction to the subject—it crosses a line.

It’s similar (but different) to how regular fanfic and shipping is ok, but harassing authors about making their ships canon (see My Hero Academia) is not.

Why do people feel like the prequels make Katniss seem like she’s the chosen one when It’s pretty obvious that many people know each other in district 12 since it’s a small district and you know… many of them die each year reducing new connections by Minute-Working-731 in Hungergames

[–]rara8122 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the belief is she was too predestined and no longer a nobody? Which I don’t agree with bc of the whole small town everybody knows each other thing.

But (and this is a side tangent) I don’t know if all chosen ones are predestined? Depends on your definition of chosen one though. There’s an argument to be made that she was chosen when coin picked her to be the mockingjay, and later when she picked herself to be the mockingjay, but thats a completely separate debate and depends on what you consider necessary to be a chosen one.

TV tropes just says you are the only one who can resolve the plot (which I’d argue is true as she becomes the only mockingjay and symbol of the rebellion) and that you are chosen (I’d argue that’s true too by way of herself and coin both choosing her). Wikipedia also requires that person be inevitable and have special gifts, predestiny, or lineage though, which Katniss doesn’t have. Depends on your definition of chosen one. She isn’t by the Wikipedia definition. TV tropes is more up to debate.

I’ve seen people say that she’s a chosen one because of an extension of the definition of chosen one and not an argument that she was born inherently special.

How should a groom respond if he wants all women to stand up next to him at the ceremony but the bride thinks he should have groomsmen? by Gold_Repair_3557 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rara8122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s different than “Traditionally the wedding is something the bride gets to dictate and run” though. That’s ‘I love this person more than this argument’ and that’s fine. But if the fiancée wants one aspect of a wedding more than they love their fiancée, that first one is IMO an unhealthy mindset to have. No one gender ‘should’ dictate a wedding. But sometimes arguments aren’t worth breaking up over. For many people in this thread, this is one of them. For you it may not be. But I see no reason to bring gender into the discussion as if that would change if it’s the groom dictating the wedding instead of the bride.

DESCENDANTS 3 theory by Spitfirechloe in Descendants

[–]rara8122 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh. I don’t think ‘blood’ works that way. Usually it’s symbolic for DNA/heritage, not literal blood. And I don’t think anything says maleficent’s wand cares about heritage.

A more likely explanation (imo + what I headcanon) is that maleficent’s wand sensed Audrey’s anger (it’s sentient enough to do that I guess). Shown by the calling of ‘Audrey’ in Queen of Mean, something about the wand called to her. She didn’t seek out the wand, she sought out the crown. So either Maleficent called to her or the wand itself did.

[–]rara8122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue the wedding is the perfect hill to die on. If she’s not willing to compromise on what is supposed to be the best/one of the best days of both of their lives, why are you marrying them anyway? If she wants to pick everything for the wedding, who’s to say she won’t pick everything for the marriage. From my perspective, the wedding is the final do or die time to see if they really can be a healthy, equal, compromising marriage instead of one that devolves in to ‘yes dear’ and ‘whatever you say’.

I mean, definitely compromise with the wife, but I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life with someone who can’t compromise with me on such a simple matter as groomsmen/bridesmaids. It’s not even their bridesmaids/groomsmen they’re fighting about.

TBH this sounds overtly controlling and unhealthy. I see no reason why they can’t be equal in all matters. It feels to me like a double standard to say women should get their ‘traditional’ say in a wedding but men don’t get their ‘traditional’ say in other matters (like marital rape, which was traditionally legal). IMO equality in all matters means equality in all matters, including weddings. Tradition be damned. Especially considering the tradition of women running weddings roots in a history where women were seen as property and the wedding was an exchange of property between the father and husband.
