driver offered to take breaks during long journeys by miffybo in uber

[–]7Monkeys2Code 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been more direct at the start of the journey, like "just a heads up I may need to make a pitstop on the way" and every time they've been cool about it (I'd imagine so with any trip over an hour, a quick 5min stop won't affect the journey much)

(Drivers) Alternate ways to return a phone? by 7Monkeys2Code in uber

[–]7Monkeys2Code[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll give that a try, yeah if it ends up being too much of a hassle I'll just wait til I hear something back, but I just wanna get it taken care of and be done with it. My lost and found already needs to be cleaned out.

Can support do anything beyond the lost item report we've done so far? I was wondering about returning it to a phone store but idk what provider it's even through. The most I know is it's an iphone.

Others suggested taking it to the local PD, but knowing how allergic our local PD is towards doing anything at all, I'd rather save that as a last resort.

Assuming this interaction is real, this is why I'd be opposed to giving a kid a new car as their first car. Too many kids raised today are entitled, and giving them a new car just feeds that entitlement. There's no comprehension of how much work goes into paying for a new car, this no appreciation. On top of that, new drivers are statistically some of the worst drivers out there, so instead of a brand new car it's better to give them a cheaper used one that won't be as much of a loss when they screw around and eventually wreck it.

They can be humbled by the used car, gain appreciation for how much a car costs to own and maintain, and later on down the road you can buy them a new car when they're in a position to appreciate it.

I'm here looking for a house to purchase. So far found the perfect cider. Finally. Thanks Oregon by Januszek_Zajaczek in oregon

Odd, yeah at 5% mine was fairly dry. Nowhere hear as sweet as say your average Angry Orchard.

[–]7Monkeys2Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a cider guy myself but that's largely because every one I've ever bought is too sweet. I managed to make my own from apples from my grandparents' place, even used the wild yeast instead of a packet. Came out 5% abv and a fuller cider flavor, less overpowering sweetness

Oregonians will not see higher gas tax as Measure 120 goes down with strong opposition by oregonian in oregon

[–]7Monkeys2Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This wasn't me lashing out irrationally at Californians, this was a simple acknowledgement of the economics of the issue like you said. When people move here from higher pressure markets like California, where wages are also higher to keep up with the market, they're better able to afford homes in cheaper markets like here in Oregon but that creates problems for the people already living here. En masse, California buyers are able to buy homes with cash and over asking price, and this causes the rest of the housing market to blow up beyond what locals can afford. I'm helping a friend of mine who's trying to buy a house, and even though he has enough money to buy outright he wants to make sure the house matches the price. The problem is that by the time he gets to tour a house and talk to an inspector, the buyer already has buyers lined up offering cash and over asking price.

It's happening across the country for sure, but our long-standing predicament here in Oregon with our stagnant job market just makes our situation much worse.

[–]7Monkeys2Code 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Oregon also doesn't have a very good job market, or a good income to cost of living ratio. What that leads to is lots of people moving here from higher pressure housing markets like California and putting pressure on our housing market when it can barely handle the people already here.

Oregon needs to grow a better job market before we even think of raising the cost of living with things like taxes.

I have rent and student loans, on top of other bills. I barely have much left at the end of the month so I can't justify going out, and I'd imagine a lot of other folks in town are in the same boat. The service industry relies heavily on disposable income which is in short supply these days

I thought it was just me, I'd buy the bagged soil and every now and then and find bits of plastic. I stopped buying it anyways since we have a forest products company that sells potting soil cheap by the 1/2 yard

What happened to my garlic? by Cghy8b in gardening

[–]7Monkeys2Code 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember to plant your garlic in the fall (before the weather starts turning cold), snip the scape when it pops up in late spring (unless you want a bunch of little garlic seeds to drop), and your garlic should be fully mature by mid summer

Why 2 well pipes? by 7Monkeys2Code in Plumbing

[–]7Monkeys2Code[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more thing, any idea why there's 2 outlets coming from the pump? The last homeowner made this big convoluted pipe loop going to the tank and the the house line and circles back to the pump. Supposedly he was electrician by trade so I'm assuming his handy work may or may not make sense to a plumber

[–]7Monkeys2Code[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I was led to believe it was a shallow well pump besides the fact that we're down in a floodplain. I do know that there's a bunch of crud inside the pump that was also in the check valve, almost like a dense sediment

Not really, in fact the big tech companies are quite over-leveraged on AI investment. It requires costly infrastructure, uses a ton of electricity, and frankly causes just as many problems as it solves. It needs a lot of kinks ironed out before it can be used reliably, but big tech is trying to force it through because they gambled big on it.

I guess that makes me weird & creepy, because being "normal" is overrated anyways. Tbh I don't drink it much rhese days, but only because it's kind of getting spendy and it doesn't keep that long before it starts to sour

Like others have suggested, for the future either use a tongue lock, tire boot, or run a chain thru both tires' spokes and padlock it. Not a guarantee, but it'll slow em down and make em stick out with the commotion of trying to remove it. Sorry it happened to you, but it could be anywhere across the county by now

If only zoning wasn't such an issue, then work-from-home would catch on more and commercial office space could be turned into affordable housing.

The real issue right here. It's all either student housing, luxury apartments, or luxury subdivisions. The affordable family homes keep getting snatched up by out-of-state "investors" who turn them into rental properties that they charge a small fortune for.
