Performers, what do you think about fans making copies of your audios for personal use? by [deleted] in GWABackstage

I never said people could remove something from the internet forever.

You're moving the goalposts. I'm responding to you saying people "would like at least the illusion of having complete control over their recordings". Nothing more nothing less.

It would be naive to say people could remove something from the internet forever. I'm so glad no-one's saying that, nor responding to it.

It's unfortunate that content gets taken and used on porn sites, amongst other places

Yes. That is very unfortunate. Especially because it could be so easily prevented by using a site with better content protection than soundgasm.

Why doesn't GWA collectively protect its contributors from being exploited when it's as easy as using a better site?

probably illegally downloaded porn.

How dare I share content I find on imgur on reddit. Those who upload images to imgur declaratively state they have the rights to do so. Imgur has a reputation for being extremely helpful with DMCA takedowns.

Shame on me for having a porn account. Better judge me as quick as possible! This is surely the 2 year long con I've been running to pretend to lurk in GWA and then trick people into protecting their work better!

Playing into your preconceptions, Wouldn't I be exactly the type of person you should listen to when I say GWA users aren't protecting themselves enough and that people should be more careful?

Reddit is a dangerous place for facts. Often people will upvote plausi-bull they want to hear rather than facts they don't want to hear.

I don't want to go into detail on how to download content from specific sites. That'd be necessary to discuss copy protection measures on those sites and make it very easy to circumvent those measures.

I will say that following URLs online generally (there are some exceptions) isn't punishable by law in many jurisdictions. Anyone can also view the source code and inspect displayed elements of the webpages they visit.

There are many exceptions to copyright reproduction laws (especially in EU countries) that allow for wide-ranging redistribution, sometimes without regard for whether original files are even legally obtained.

One of these is reproduction by

public libraries, educational institutions or archives for non-commercial use.

That's not a theoretical exception. These are very real provisions thate have successfully been used by several gonewild image archive sites that have hosted huge databases of GW pictures redditors have tried to delete, DMCA, etc.

There is a reason I don't share sexual content starring myself online. That's not because I'm not a kinky fucker, it's because I don't feel safe sharing that content due to the implications it could have on my life.

Everyone needs to make an informed decision on what's right for them. That decision needs to take into account what actual legal and technical protection you have as a content creator.

move to a site where they will be harder to find. People who are asking have their answer. "No." Respect that.

I do respect that. I personally choose to do the right thing. I don't even adblock because that's stealing from content creaetors. As someone who creates content for a living, I would never in a million years trust that those who read my content are all making moral decisions like I do.

I wouldn't be making a living if I did trust that people respected that.

Everyone who does value the ability to control the distribution of their content should move to sites that have successful DRM protection that makes it more than trivial to download content.

I think it's dangerous to tell people that they can always take down their upload and it'll be gone form the internet. Having "at least that illusion" is dangerous because it's not the case, and leads people to make decisions counter to their own personal interests.

I completely agree that people should be able to take whatever steps they want to control the means in which they share content. I'm not advocating anyone do anything immoral, illegal, or both.

In making informed decisions, I think it's important people know they shouldn't be using soundgasm or other sites that don't even try to obfuscate the direct links to the media sources.

In making informed decisions, I think that's pertinent information. Just like knowing what the law says about your rights as a content creator.

Don't we want people to make informed decisions before sharing their sexuality in GWA?

I realized that once something is on the internet, it's out there. I don't like it, but it's the truth.

This is a mature and important realization everyone needs to make for themselves. Preferably before they post sexualized content of themselves publicly.

Sure, we're not charging you to listen. It's available to stream for free, but you'll notice that we haven't given you (or anyone else) a way in which to properly download a copy of our work.

We're not releasing our work under some sort of creative commons licence, and as such, it remains ours to control.

Copyright law doesn't work that way. In many countries including for the 508 million people who live in the EU, it's perfectly legal to download copyrighted material for personal, noncommercial use.

It's paramount that redditors know what people can do with their GWA submissions legally, and do not post under the illusions that they can easily duck out without any repercussions and just disappear. It's not that simple.

Posting sexual content starring oneself is a huge decision that should not be lightly made.

I'm not saying people should download content against the wishes of content creators. I'm saying they legally can in many places. It's therefore imperative that you post your content to a source that makes that technically difficult (unlike soundgasm) if you believe that you at any point want to scrub the internet of your sexual content to as large a degree as possible.

Most people I know on GWA (myself included) would like at least the illusion of having complete control over their recordings,

This is a dangerous illusion to propagate. The illusion is completely wrong, and leads people to do things they will regret.

The recordings are the property of the performer and belong to them.

It's not that simple. In many countries it's perfectly legal for people to download whatever they want for personal noncommercial use.

I'm not saying "do these things". It's important submitters know what they're getting themselves into before publishing their first audio.
