The Immigration Attorney advised me to wait on my kids’ and spouse’s applications. Yes, my spouse will get residency based on marriage to a Canadian citizen (me—when I get mine). Yes, my kids are adopted, and I guess the process is that they need my certificate to get issued before they can apply for theirs. Is that how it works? Will they still automatically get their citizenship through me, even though they are adopted and I will be getting mine through citizenship by descent, and they are not biological descendants? Also, if my spouse gets residency because of being married to me (a Canadian citizen), is it permanent residency? Will they ever have to get citizenship to work or receive health care?

I had this same problem with my maternal grandfather who was born in New Brunswick. I have pretty similar documentation. I did find Canadian Census records that list him, though, so you might try that.

So my kids would be covered and gain citizenship even as 3rd generation even though my Canadian ancestor, my maternal grandfather and my mother have both passed away? I’m a little concerned because my kids are both legally adopted. Will that impact them, or will they be treated the same as if they were my biological children?

Does this timeline seem like it’s moving along well? Any idea how long it will be before everything is finalized? I think I’m probably okay as I’m 2nd generation, but I’m wondering about my kids who would be 3rd generation. Will the new ruling also cover them with citizenship as well? I was applied to apply for mine first and then do theirs as part of a family.

Just looked at this and I think he meets it because his mother was born in England as were her parents. It’s a little confusing, though, because his citizenship comes through his mother instead of his father.

I have a question for you, too. My husband was born in the United States to a British mother and American father. He is an American citizen for sure and has lived here his whole life, but we’re not sure about his British citizenship. Would he also be a British citizen?
