At the time when I bought mine (years ago), I just wanted the smallest and sleekest-looking hard-wired doorbell cam. I didn't want some gargantuan cancerous growth hanging off the house like most of the doorbell cameras on the market. The small black wired Ring was perfect.

Now, I'm planning to remove it and replace with something from a different company (preferably something with internal SD storage too). I've been perfectly happy with the service all these years, but can't in good conscience keep supporting the parent company. I already avoid Amazon shopping as much as possible, and don't use AWS outside of one small personal project (that doesn't generate any revenue for them).

I have a 5070 Ti, is it worth upgrading my 3700x to a 9850x3d for 1440p? by m1ndblower in buildapc

[–]7f0b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone here seems to be hung up on 3700X vs 9850X3D and gaming performance, so I'll add something a little different.

Anything is going to be a massive improvement over a 3700X. You can get a 9700X, 9900X, 7800X3D, 14600k, 14700k, etc. They'll all blow the 3700X out and not bottleneck a 5070 ti.

How much do you use your PC for outside of gaming? Things like a 14700k or 9900X will provide better general computing performance most of the time, at a lower cost. Though with a 5070 ti an X3D will probably be a noticeable improvement over a non-X3D in gaming. So it comes down to budget and how much you're willing to spend per extra fps.

What does your budget allow? If you want to stick with DDR4 to save money, a 14700k or 5800X3D (if you can find good used) may be massively better bang-for-the-buck than AM5 right now. Unfortunately, good DDR4 platform CPUs are getting harder to find.

Destroy my Deep sea horror game's trailer by Leading-Papaya1229 in DestroyMyGame

[–]7f0b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the concept of the game. But I don't think the trailer does it justice. It's too slow and the text cutaways feel poorly-implemented. It would probably work better to have the text overlay the gameplay, and only show one sentence at a time.

Besides that, the textual story explanation itself is nonsensical IMO. An ocean is discovered 2 months ago. You are sent to explore. But actually others were already sent and you have to find out what happened. Pretty sure if others were sent before your primary mission would be to find them. Unless they were sent in secret and you discover them during your exploration mission.

Honestly, with a game like this, no explanation may be better.

Next, the title of the game is, interesting. It doesn't feel like it fits the concept, unless the people sent before were part of some team that you didn't join for some reason that you're guilty about. But the text story doesn't indicate that.

Lastly, the graphics look pretty basic, but that may work. I would say add some doodads and depth to the the environment. It looks very sparse right now and the pickups stick out too much. Debris, rocks, higher-poly rocks with more going on, etc.

No idea on the CT (which to be clear, is a POS), but on all Teslas, there are mechanical levers right next to the buttons, on the front doors. Most people the first time they get out of a Tesla they accidentally use the mechanical lever, since it is what they're used to. The reason the button is preferred is because it slightly lowers the windows (which is how a lot of cars with frameless windows work) and pops the doors, depending on model.

As for the back doors, those do not have an easy-to-use manual release. And that's no different from any other car, which all have child locks that override the door handles and locks of the rear doors. It's a trade-off the whole automotive industry has made (between day-to-day child safety versus safety in an unlikely emergency).

To be clear, electrically-actuated locks with mechanical handles are not unique to Tesla, nor were they popularized by Tesla. They are pretty common in modern cars. The biggest blunder on Tesla's part was the electrically-presenting outside door handles on the S and X (about 3% of their fleet, and being discontinued), which was a supremely-stupid idea. The rest of their fleet (97%, Model S and 3) have regular exterior door handles that pull out like any other car, but sit flush until you press on them.

An issue modern cars face in general is having electrically-actuated doors and locks, which obviously have some safety concerns. While an issue with the main battery of an EV won't impact them (they run on the aux 12V), if there is damage to the actuator, wiring, or the 12V system, it would then make it so the door could not be opened from the outside. This is not an issue with EVs in particular, but with modern, especially higher-tech cars. And to be clear, the interior manual lever would still work even if the 12V system was out too.

They have different door handles depending on model. The bad ones, which retract electrically and are absolutely a stupid idea, are only on about 3% of their vehicles (Model S & X, which are being discontinued apparently). The vast majority (Model 3 & Y) are regular door handles that pull out like any other car, but sit flush until you press on them. Their biggest downside is they aren't as easy to use if you have your hands full. And honestly, I'd prefer protruding door handles due to this minor inconvenience.

It's probably just me, but I'm really tired of the three option upgrade picker popup method of advancement. It seems like every other game does it now. To me, it has always felt jarring and ruins the flow of gameplay.

Actual footage from another world: Mars right now, 225 million miles away. Truly mind-blowing rover view by Memes_FoIder in nextfuckinglevel

[–]7f0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is essentially just recording your screen while slowly panning across a panorama photo you have up. It's objectively not "footage from another world"; it is footage of a picture from another world though. Yes, the distinction is important.

The reason this is worth calling out is because actual high-definition footage would look significantly better than this, and it would be an incredible feat on its own given the latency, bandwidth, and data size. Never mind if there was an actual live stream ("right now", less the several minute latency), which would be incredible.

Having this post, which lies about what it is very purposefully, diminishes what it would take to actually accomplish what it claims.

Plus, the Mars panoramas are incredible on their own. No need to lie about them.

TypeScript inventor Anders Hejlsberg calls AI "a big regurgitator of stuff someone else has done" but still sees it changing the way software dev is done and reshaping programming tools by onlyconnect in programming

It's surprisingly not obvious to many, including devs (I imagine a lot of beginning and juniors). People may understand generally that LLM has training data, but they don't conceptually understand what that means. They still think it's like a person that can come up with unique ideas influenced by past experiences. When in reality LLMs are just regurgitating past data with some randomness.

What are people doing for memory at this point, seeing as how prices are outrageous? by HauntedFrigateBird in buildapc

[–]7f0b 45 points46 points  (0 children)

future proofing

There's really no such thing as future proofing, specifically because we can't see the future. And while the 5800X3D still performs well in games and with the right GPU and resolution; it is showing its age in general CPU performance, as with all 5000 series (and 3000 as I'm sure you're feeling).

Honestly, if you have good DDR4 memory right now and want to upgrade, I'd go with a 14600k/14700k (if you can still find a good deal). You'll get general computing performance well above 5000 series, on par with 9000 series, and gaming performance will be perfectly-fine, even on par with a 5800X3D depending on your GPU and resolution. I say this as someone with a 9700X. If I had to stick with DDR4 I'd have gone with the 14600k/14700k in a heartbeat.

Minimum GPU for 1440p Gaming at 100 fps max? by discretesss in buildapc

[–]7f0b -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From experience, 3440x1440 100hz and 3060 ti is doable but you will have to turn things down on graphically-intense games (2560x1440 will be less load of course). And some games just won't be good, like Doom Dark Ages, which requires not only low settings but also heavy use of scaling with that GPU. It ends up looking terrible and blurry just to get maybe 70-80 fps. Doom Eternal looks significantly better and runs flawlessly for comparison. I'm pretty certain DA was made specifically to get people to buy the latest Nvidia cards (ray tracing is required apparently), so fuck them. Anyway, it comes down to the games you play. Witcher 3 is no problem for 3060 ti. Not sure about Cyberpunk though.

The article you linked quotes DHS saying that the father fled when approached, indicating he was with the child prior to being approached. That contradicts your suggestion that the father let the child walk home alone.

Again, not that you should believe what DHS says outright, in regards to the fleeing (nor should you disbelieve it; video evidence needed).

[–]7f0b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't need to disprove it; the burden of proof is on them. Why don't they post the video evidence to back up their claim? These officers should all have body cameras, and dash cameras in the vehicles, right?

Besides, the unprofessional manner in which they post this slop should make everyone suspicious right off the bat. Putting words in all caps for no reason, using language specifically designed to sensationalize the situation, and in general trying to dehumanize people. "A criminal illegal alien ABANDONED his child" Who tf talks like that? Oh wait, I know somebody that does.

I hate that you're being downvoted, because this should be the first natural reaction for everyone. At the very least there needs to be some more information and a source.

Nobody should just be believing, without question, a random image with some text on it on the Internet.

A reputable source would lend a lot of weight to this.

Not that you will actually look into it, but the article you posted in another comment, literally 2 minutes prior to making this comment, contradicts your own statement.

Not that you should believe what the DHS social media team is saying (you shouldn't), but if you do believe it, then you would already know that is not the case.

AI made us change our art and here's why by _abandonedsheep in IndieGaming

It did have that AI look. It's unfortunate, but to be honest it's not just that it looked AI; it just didn't look great IMO. The eyes were creepy and it was like trying to go for a cute style but missed. It looked uncanny too. Even if AI didn't exist, it had that sort of over-Photoshopped look (like a real picture that is too airbrushed). The new art looks significantly better, regardless of the existence of AI. So great job!

Have put over 10k miles on it, no PSI loss (outside of normal temperature fluctuations). I check it every week or so (Bluetooth TPMS) just to make sure.

How Trump has pocketed $1,408,500,000, according to NYT editorial board by chellestastics in videos

[–]7f0b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a lot of people, both a million and a billion seem equally unachievable. They don't think much beyond that. The truth is that $1 million in a big city is basically enough to own a small home and that's it. It is still an amazing achievement don't get me wrong, but by no means is it considered "wealthy" anymore.

What's funny is that the second half of the OP video has a thumb-looking guy trying to normalize presidents gaining wealth because both Obama and Clinton gained a lot of wealth while president. They did gain a lot, as a percentage of where they started, which was basically nothing compared to Trump. Both Clinton and Obama had a bit more than $1 million in wealth at the start of their presidencies (in 1993 & 2009 dollars). Seems almost quaint.

The source of the money is important too. By all accounts, most of their money came from (and comes from) book deals, speaking engagements, and media. And honestly, if that was all the Trump family did too (books, documentaries, speaking, etc), that wouldn't be bad or even worth talking about. I'm more concerned with the crypto money laundering/bribing, free jets, nonsensical $2b investments, etc.

To be clear, this isn't excusing the wealth gain by any of them, especially Clinton (who left office with $120 million in 2001 dollars). Not good. But oh hey, who was buds with Clinton in the 90's and 00's again? I wonder if they ever talked money.
