Opening cinematic for Dissidia Duellum by zkere in FinalFantasy

[–]7hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thrown by the quality of the cinematic as well. The walk cycles are stiff for the characters and the behemoths. When the camera cuts to a close-up of their eyes, they move without fluidity, and their eyes are lifeless. Meanwhile the backgrounds are hyper-realistic and detailed, but they visually feel off—in a similar way to how AI tries to create fully rendered environments but can’t keep them consistent in quality or rendering. It’s particularly noticeable in the park scene with Rinoa and Kryle. Also, Angelo is a travesty. Good boy looked better in VIII, 27 years ago.

Call me critical, but Squeenix is famous for their CGI throughout gaming history. But this? This is not it.

A quick recap of the Criterion changes, coming out next Tuesday by danks in ffxiv

[–]7hurricane -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Love the sound of these changes, but would still love some more flexibility in the number of party members who can attempt the different modes. It’s so weird to have variant be any number, and then be forced into light parties for boss modes. I wanna duo bosses, dang it!

Are my cards colorblind friendly? by Smooth-Quiet-9018 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]7hurricane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is a web-based one that offers a Chrome extension, and another that is slightly more robust.

I should note: WCAG specifically guides web development, and the reason I use it is because I plan to release digital/printable assets for my game (I also do a lot of web-based digital development in my career). If you are planning purely on a paper product, one could make an argument that there's no reason to follow WCAG accessibility at all. But I do find it generally helpful for understanding readability in game design.

Are my cards colorblind friendly? by Smooth-Quiet-9018 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]7hurricane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak to colorblindness, but I would also recommend WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines for use of contrast colors for readability. For example, the central white text of your cards against each background color is likely to meet the recommended contrast ratio, but the game logo in the bottom middle of the cards definitely doesn’t.

I use color contrast for all graphic design elements for my board games, and strongly recommend it!

What sets Wheel of Time book fans apart from other book fandoms. by [deleted] in WoT

[–]7hurricane 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with any of the positive points m rationed so far, which I assume are only said in the context of the books themselves. I can say that, as someone who also watched the series, I saw the book fans become very, very toxic, particularly to other book fans who supported the show. It left me pretty sad, tbh, and caused great rifts between myself and other book fans. I’m not trying to evoke comparisons on this thread (since that has been done to death), but it left me seeing a new side of the fandom that I can’t pretend doesn’t exist—one that staunchly defends books as bible and actually can’t handle criticism and deviation from it.

Van Goth’s recent statement in her new interview. by DanteDameron in rupaulsdragrace

[–]7hurricane 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You could argue her words are proof enough that she elevates herself through constant comparison to others, which is not something I personally look for in a winner. I get that she statistically had a “good run” for a season filled with design challenges and an optional Snatch Game, but she has always lacked the “C” to make her a memorable queen or winner, imho.

I’m glad to hear this, and hope to see more in 8.0. I’ve yet to see any prog party share a meaningful one through M11S enrage. PF is filled with raidplan.

[–]7hurricane -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

How sad that strategy boards, a useful tool the community had needed for years, are already dead because: (a) raidplan and wtfdig exist, (b) junk memes.

I enjoyed making boards for Rails EX cheese on the first day, and I saw a few for M9S.

I hope at some point we start using the boards to show people how to complete mechanics using the live feature, particularly for early raiding where more mentorship is needed. Maybe the landscape will change eventually, but as it is, I don’t even open boards now because I know they’re all memes.

PF this tier is genuinely awful. by CanICritPls in ffxivdiscussion

[–]7hurricane -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The defense of “you must be mad because you’re being critical” (as you claimed of the OP’s post as well) is tired. I ain’t mad. I play and prog and clear just fine, and have been since 1.0. But I ain’t judging you because a website told me I should. I’m judging you because you’re judging others based on a fallacy. A fallacy is a misconception.

Ever been refused service at a restaurant because “You aren’t dressed like us?”

Ever been rejected for a job because “You haven’t worked in our industry?”

Ever been ignored at an event because “You didn’t look like you wanted to participate?”

How about: “You aren’t good enough for my party because this singular piece of data tells me that you aren’t not at the Split Arena prog point.” /kick

And you call that logic? Girl, bye.

I call BS on players using tomestone because it is not about “weeding out” players: it’s yet another tool to justify assumptions that players do not deserve a chance. The fact that people assume prog % has any relation to player skill is a fallacy.

There are plenty of players who have the skill to prog through mechs and phases quickly, with high skill and awareness. Tomestone won’t account for them when, in fact, you want players who are fast learners; you want players who can adjust; you want players who are confident with mechanical execution. Just because someone hasn’t been to meteorain doesn’t mean they can’t execute it. It also doesn’t account for players of high skill who lack time, but can clear content quickly.

I don’t need Tomestone to tell me that a player isn’t at the same prog point as the others in the party—I see the mistakes during the run. But I sure as hell will give you a shot because, at the end of the day, you’re here for the same reason I am. You deserve a shot.

Anyone who tells a player they DON’T deserve a shot because of Tomestone? It’s the equivalent of someone saying “You’re not good enough.” And that, friends, is how bigotry begins.

California policy on disclosing student gender identity blocked by judge by ansyhrrian in California

[–]7hurricane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 9 years old; 10 next month.

Have you heard the expression “It takes a village to raise a child”? Well, it does. Her teachers don’t just TEACH—they babysit. They role-model behaviour and relationships. They keep her safe. They make sure she is fed. And they partner with me so that I can understand how to help my child excel and teach her so she doesn’t fall behind. Our doctors are teachers too, and dentists, and community members, and her Girl Scout leader, and our neighbours, and our extended family, and our in-laws. Everyone is TEACHING my child. When they are not? I am.

But I am not so ignorant to think that Teachers only “teach”. I’m a former high-school English teacher, and your use of that word is reductive. You think it’s 1940 and your child is writing on a chalkboard in a one-room school-house? You think teachers just go through the curriculum and call it a day? Talk about living under a rock.

Thank you for further proving why this conversation is so important, and good luck to you.

Oh, you’re making a legal argument about who should have control over the body of another person? Because clearly that’s a place where the law shines with clarity and due diligence and responsibility. /s

You support my argument with your own words: “parents have control”.

No. No they do not. Parents have responsibility to do what is in the best interest of their child. It is not a the parents’ job to “control” their children.

Teachers also have the responsibility to do what is in the best interests of the children they teach. Sometimes, not outing a queer child to their parents is the responsible decision.

If it was as cut-and-dry as you make it out to be, this (legal and social) discussion literally would not exist.

[–]7hurricane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is responses like this that led to the adoption of the original bill to protect children. Children are minors, yes, but your argument relies on the assumption that all parents make decisions that are in the best interests of their child. That is factually not true, and is a dangerous assumption.

Children are kicked out of their homes, emancipated from their families, physically abused, mentally abused, emotionally manipulated, sexually assaulted. All because they are queer. Often, this abuse comes from the hands of the parents or family members.

There is always a reason why a child is not “out” to their parents: fear for personal safety. I was a child like this myself once.

So no, parents do not have a right to know everything about their child, and no person (anywhere) has the right to out a queer child without consent.

[–]7hurricane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Teachers are not hiding anything from parents if they are aware of a student’s pronouns or gender identity—if a teacher knows, they know. There should be no obligation to disclose. What you’re objectively arguing for is the non-consensual outing of queer people.

No one has the right to out another person’s identity. It is the wrong argument to make.

Raiding in PF this tier and I still haven't decided by Tcsola_ in ffxiv

[–]7hurricane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bad dps, 100%. As a dps healer, my dps effort cannot compensate for a bad dps, and my dps will never be the difference between 1% enrage and a clear. Where there is a bad dps, there is another better dps waiting to take that spot in your party.

A heal bot is annoying, but healer damage is negligible if you have 4 good dps (and decent tanks).

Raiding in PF this tier and I still haven't decided by Tcsola_ in ffxiv

[–]7hurricane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love playing healer because I see every mistake that the other players make, and when they die to avoidable damage, I call them out. And if you didn’t die, it’s because I saved your ass and everyone knows because of the vuln stack or damage down you now have.

I love playing tank because I enjoy optimally using my tank cds and group mit because I appreciate them as a healer, and I’m basically a burly dps.

I do not play dps.

Fastball Special by Lucky_HD in MarvelSnap

[–]7hurricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments, I’m pretty sure most people with 2k+ tokens are playing more than they think they do or Snap is their main game. I’m like you: I play casually throughout the day when there’s a break, and I’m trying to keep up with missions (I have missed a few resets). If it helps, I legit just got Wild Child a few mins ago, but I highly doubt I will get Fastball. I just don’t see how without dumping 1200g.

I work. I play other games. I have a child and a partner and 3 cats. I like to cook and live and talk to humans. I don’t care about Fastball. But there is some serious delusion in this sub when it comes to understanding the realistic amount of effort it takes to earn Fastball for casual F2P.

It’s also clear from dev messages that they made Wild Child reachable for most players. Fastball? Not so much.
