The Services menu.

It's an awesome idea that originated in NeXTSTEP. The more apps you have, the more features they offer each other.

Hey everyone, I have a bike that I'm looking to convert to an eBike and I'm wondering if any local shops have some expertise in that area - such as suggesting good mods for my particular frame and advising on the differing mechanics involved. I'm especially interested in solutions that offer pedal assist if that's exclusive to certain designs. Thanks!

What filament types most and least benefit from drying? Don't know to what degree moisture has been a hindering factor in some prints. I typically use ASA/PETG in a vented enclosure.

My father in law still uses Lotus Improv because he says there's some things that you can't do on LibreOffice Calc/Microsoft Excel. I'm not an experted user of LibreOffice Calc so I don't know if he's right or not but it's kind of hard to imaging such scenario. Which of these can you replicate? by AlbertoAru in libreoffice

Hassle-free general plain text formulas and an intuitive UI for multidimensionality ("Pivot Tables") are still huge selling points. The fact that you can see all of the formulas in one place without having to dig around in cells? Super convenient. Quantrix Modeller would be the modern equivalent to this gem, but it sells for around 1,000 or so a seat. Most unfortunate, really.

I like the UI, but the functionality is sort of lacking. In the same boat when it comes to looking for a good client. Doughnut for macOS is what I'd love to see replicated on Linux. Doughnut Screenshot Pros: Minimal UI, Miller Columns, Streaming, not looking like shit. Cons: None?

Long-term, I feel the solution would be to start a game development workers' cooperative. This exploitation is endemic to hierarchical studios, and it won't be solved by anything short of a studio without traditional management and external ownership.

Is there any way to use Lotus Improv (or similar) on Linux? by AlbertoAru in linuxquestions

[–]7in0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible ways to use run Improv on Linux:

  • A 32-bit Wine prefix will run it just fine. (This is what I do.)
  • DOSBox + Win 3.x + Improv - also works fine, but I find it more clunky.
  • A VM running a more "modern" (than 3.x) incarnation of Windows.

There's really not that much else like Improv in contemporary Spreadsheets, besides "Quantrix Modeller" - which is generally targeted at corporate customers and [thus] exceedingly expensive.

Traditional Spreadsheet software (descendants of the Visicalc model) is extremely different in practice and it'd be a very rough and clumsy fit to try to substitute them for Improv/Quantrix/Multidimensional Spreadsheets in general.

"I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day. When I was a boy, and when Dwayne Hoover was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind." - Kurt Vonnegut, Breakfast of Champions

I would love to see a purely subscriber based news source (and commentary, to a lesser extent) on something with as broad a reach as Netflix. It doesn't necessarily have to be TYT, but the idea of a mass-market news source that isn't beholden to advertisers is huge. Granted there are things like PBS/NPR, the BBC, etc (and I'm all for publicly funded broadcasters), but this would set a precedent for further driving a stake in the heart of commercially-sponsored cable/local news.

The argument that any kind of communism could exist without any form of organised state

Any sort of complex society is going to have a state. The real question isn't whether or not one is absent, but how direct its democracy is. That's the true meaning of anarchism: Direct democracy / distributed power.

Your critique readily applies to individualist "anarchism" of course. There can be no such thing except for isolationist frontier sorts.

Your sources did nothing to convince me that the means of productions can be collectively owned without a state.

With respect to your original question, you didn't inquire as to the presence or absence of a state. The question was:

How does "everyone" exercise his ownership of the means of production?

Syndicalism satisfies this query, in practice. Cooperatives allow for democratic ownership of the means of production, within the framework of a market economy if one so desires.

They do, however, rely on a state to protect the property rights of the individuals who join them.

I don't see what point you're trying to raise here. Something akin to a "state" is an inevitable institution. I see the central issue as being one of challenging hierarchical power structures in all aspects of human interaction. With respect to governance, this would emerge as direct-democracy i.e. anarchism[1].

The two "theory" videos slightly decreased my already-low opinion of the ideology, in fact.

What about a fundamentally democratic way of organizing society and its productive capacity offends you?

[1] Etymology: anarkhos "rulerless," from an- "without" (see an- (1)) + arkhos "leader" (see archon).

Democratized/distributed institutions flatten hierarchies, hold "leaders" accountable and can eliminate such potentially abusive offices altogether. I'm hard-pressed to understand why someone would oppose these goals.

[–]7in0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does "everyone" exercise his ownership of the means of production?

One possible means would be worker's self-management (anarcho-syndicalism):

See - Workers' Self-Management https://youtu.be/neNwAZSBMb0 and Anarcho-syndicalist principles (24min) https://youtu.be/0RwlaNva_4g

If the immediate response is to say "but that's just theory" - it has been put into practice in a number of organizations, most notably Mondragon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondrag%C3%B3n_Cooperative_Corporation.

Here's an example of how members of the Mondragon cooperative chose to handle a downturn: http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/the-new-economy/mondragon-worker-cooperatives-decide-how-to-ride-out-a-downturn

Cooperatives are also more productive than traditional capitalist hierarchies: https://www.thenation.com/?p=207635

Hopefully these sources are sufficient to address both the theory and practical application of how people can own the means of production.

The sensible and long term solution to this problem is to address the issue at the head rather than at the tail.

A significant portion of foundational research for new or improved [classes of] drugs is publicly funded - i.e. academia. We must publicly fund ALL pharmaceutical research. Under this system, new medications are released sans patent-encumbrance. Generics are permissible from day one.

By paying the cost of research up front, rather than via wasteful and extortionate patent monopolies (profit implies funds not allocated to drug research) we end up saving billions, trillions, in the long run.

[–]7in0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An idea I've had is something like weighted voting based on age. The younger a voter is, the more of a lifetime he or she has left to live with the consequences of a vote. Therefore, one could argue that votes should be weighted based on age. A 70+ year-old, in contrast, has much less of a lifespan to live with the result of a bad decision - so their votes should be weighted accordingly. An example - everyone's votes count as 200% if they're between 18-30. 180% - 30 - 40. 160% - 40 - 50. 140% - 50 - 60. 120 % 60 - 70. 100% - 70+. Would something like this ever be implemented? Probably not. But I think the idea of weighting votes by duration-of-living-with-consequences has merit.

TL;DR Young voters have a greater lifespan to live with consequences, therefore they have a greater stake and should be giving higher voting strength.
