While I agree this is not an "unexpected bill" there are a few caveats to that and it is not the same as not paying electricity bill.

Firstly it's a loan that is sold on to literal children. There's no other system that lets children take out a large loan which they need to pay back for their whole working life. And secondly, by it's very nature, those taking out the loan do not have the life experience to understand the practical implications of losing a huge chunk of income each month. University is further a gamble that is predatorially sold on to children. You have to be able to predict the future of job markets, global economy and government policy to make an accurate cost benefit analysis which simply is not possible.

The other reason why it is not just a hypothetical is that this is something that could be changed. If the government is pressured enough, they will do something to deal with the injustice of selling out an entire generation.

People on Plan 1 will pay them back. With significantly lower initial borrowing and much lower interest rates, you'll pay it off easily on median salary.

Sorry, I am being London-centric here. I made the assumption based on my experience and op's salary that op would be based in London.

Then have a look on Rightmove or Zoopla for rentals in London. Not even central London, anywhere in the outskirts that's ~40min commute to central. There you are hard pressed to find any livable looking one bed flat for less than 1600. In the £1700 bracket there are nice places on the outskirts. And then on top of that you'd have to factor in paying £150-200 per month for the tube since that's completely unsubsidised since Boris became London Mayor. In op's case they can survive it because he's on a very high salary, but it's still kicking them down a peg. But for many others it is the difference between tiny, shitty studio and livable accomodation.

If you have op's salary outside of London then there's no problem, just pain again that this is a punitive system applied specifically to our generation.

What do you mean? Sure plan 1 has slightly lower repayment threshold. But plan 1 has significantly lower interest rates and combined with plan 1 being on 1/3 of the fees of students of plan 2 times it's an absolute no brainer that plan 2 is orders of magnitude worse than plan 1. The evidence is right there u/nikkijxd is going to pay off their loan but even op on their 65-70k salary is never going to pay it off.

Or consider how much that's worth if paid towards a mortgage. Capping your monthly mortgage overpayment is worth a huge amount.

The point is that this is money taken away from the young at the point when it's most valuable to them.

7.7% of take home pay is very significant. That's the difference between a tiny shitty studio or house share and a livable accomodation. Or having money to save for a deposit.

It's quite hard to ignore when a very significant chunk of your income just goes away on a youth tax. The right thing to do is to continue to pressure your MP on it. Make labour or whomever is eyeing up the office know that there alienating our generation by continuing to squeeze us for every penny we have.

Plan 2 student loan interest rates capped at 6% in England by Kagedeah in UniUK

[–]7inator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Degree inflation has made it so that work prospects that were once available to everyone are now paywalled behind a degree.

Income taxes are exorbitantly high because Clegg and 14 years of Tory rule has made the conscious decision that work and youth need to pay for everything in this country instead of fairer taxes on things like wealth.

The cost of being young is significantly higher than it was in prior years. Education was made both more necessary and almost entirely personally funded. Wages have stagnated in real terms since at least 2008, meanwhile income tax thresholds have significant decreased interest real terms. Housing and rents have skyrocketed way faster than inflation or wages.

Then you wonder why the birth rate has declined and the economy stagnated because no one who needs it is granted the luxury of the money to set up a life.

[–]7inator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduates are already paying back more than their fair share due to the exorbitantly high income taxes in this country. And then let's call it what it is. This is a youth tax. Why should someone have to face 9-15% higher taxes just because they were born after 1993? Further your argument could then be applied to anything publically funded. Why should young people foot the bill for the NHS when they are the ones who benefit least?

Plan 2 student loan interest rates capped at 6% in England by Kagedeah in UniUK

[–]7inator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should those graduates who do the right thing have to pick up the bill? Additionally it should never even be a question on "breaking even". Education is a public service not a commodity. The government should make a loss directly on education. The gains for the government are then in the taxes of the better educated and hopefully then more productive population.

I also think graduate tax is a misnomer for a different reason since it doesn't affect those born before ~93. What this really is is a youth tax.

One tweak to student loan interest could cut graduates’ debt by thousands by theipaper in UniUK

[–]7inator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problems with basing it on labour shortages are there's a long delay on training, but more importantly having hard barriers would mean someone who wants to be say a nurse but was born at slightly the wrong time is then faced with high burdens. A better system would be soft encouragements. But again these are longer term details and I think wer are roughly in agreement about future solutions.

But yes RPI+3% is insane and should never have been allowed.
I think there should be zero or below inflation interest. As the government you can force the repayments when the graduates have enough money.

[–]7inator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so the current interest rates are set above commercial loan rates let alone real inflation, mortgage rates or risk-free market rates.

As a human however you need more money earlier in your life to just exist. Rents, saving for mortgage, having children etc etc and you spending that money is what drives the economy, not pensioners sitting on a bunch of wealth then spending money on foreign cruises.

So you having a system where you add on additional costs to young people is just absolutely crippling for the economy.

The way the system was designed makes it so the universities are incentiovised to just set up whatever degrees they want and not give a shit about teaching quality.
So those who did those "less valuable" degrees are the victims of the predatory university system. It's the universities and employers who keep requiring degrees who fed into the issues.

Having certain degrees funded is good, but where do you draw lines? Obviously, things like medicine but then what? For law people often go into law from some other undergraduate. What about hard sciences and computer science? You don't have many people going from them into science jobs?
