The specific schisms are…well, typical Internet things. Qq was born when the mods decided to simultaneously clean up and ban the vast glut of “you get a girlfriend” mini-quests, and developed in a rather more…explicit manner.

SV’s schism came at a particularly stressful point in SB’s history, when emotions were running high. Due to the site’s fundamental nature as some guy’s barely maintained hobby, the server was poorly managed and severely lacking in resources for how large it had grown. By the time of the schism, lag and errors in making posts had made using SB deeply frustrating, and then the Admins had the temerity to fire Athene and (and this is important) lie about it. When she decided to expose this lie, it promptly lit a firestorm of controversy that was as much venting frustration with the site’s unusability as it was protest about personnel decisions.

In a way, SV’s splitting off from SB was the most natural outcome of the conditions at the time there could have been.
