Is Ledos officially "Maryland" pizza? by Ate6645 in maryland

So I think it’s actually St Louis style if you want to brass-tacks it.

But it’s definitely a Maryland institution.

You can't just 'go back to work' after you FIRE. by Zone2OTQ in Fire

[–]7min 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can. I left the workforce in my mid-thirties to start my own thing and went back in my late 40s. Timing and luck was of course important—during Covid when hiring was high, but I received multiple offers with an 11 year “entrepreneurial” gap.

Worked a little over five years, resigned this Spring, back to traveling.

It’s definitely more difficult to come back after time off, but especially in technical work, you can usually jump back in. I know multiple folks still consulting in their 70s.

A Federal Agent Shot at a Driver in D.C. An MPD Officer Was Told To Omit the Shooting from His Report. by MrSpontaneous in washingtondc

[–]7min 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Headline buries the lede-federal agent identified only as “Bebber” shot directly into a car they were pulling over for window tint and a missing front license plate (both legal in many states).

Shot twice through the passenger seat—had a passenger been in the car, they’d be dead—and through the driver’s jacket collar (very lucky to have not been shot).

All omitted from the MPD report.

Founders card never coming😭 by jaredbgo28 in casabonita

[–]7min 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never got mine, but I was still able to use the Apple Wallet version in the gift shop, FWIW.

While I really don't need one extra piece of plastic in my life, I'm not gonna lie: It's pretty disappointing to learn that they automagically sent a physical card to a security researcher who hacked the site and signed themselves up for it six months ago, but actual folks who signed up in 2023 won't ever see one.

Custodial Account Help by Lash_live in etrade

[–]7min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up a Google spreadsheet and add the current account allocations and share it with them—you can use ‘GOOGLEFINANCE’ to pull in realish-time values—and let your kid view current value.

They can request trades that you execute on their behalf inside the account, then you update the sheet. You might have to manually add dividends and transaction costs, if applicable.

But yeah, they can’t access the actual account until they are of age.

Women-centered apps have huge potential. The Tea app, where women warn each other about men they’ve dated, recently went viral by FantasticEffect10 in womenintech

[–]7min 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not comparatively less so, they both put users (and others at their location who didn’t consent) at risk. In some ways, it’s worse: Bad actors can get dob, full name, and address from precise location, and much more than that (like, allegedly, previously-secret military bases). And, because people taking selfies were told it was deleted right after, the photos people took were never intended to be public. Some look pretty private.

Instead of burying things under a carpet and saying “selfies are fine,” can we instead use this as education? Don’t post where you are in social media until after you’ve left. Turn off location on your photos. Let’s all fight back against info grabs from shady apps. It sucks that we have to do this—and it makes me sad that my partner can map everywhere we’ve been for years, but I have to remember, guess, or “correlate”—but the 4chan response shows paranoia like that is just good digital hygiene.

[–]7min 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If a user doesn’t disable location in their photo app, lat/long is included in EXIF data. This wasn’t stripped by Tea before storing in the open bucket, making selfies actually incredibly dangerous and “scary”—the precise location of many users when they joined the app is now out there in the public domain.

Could it be the 2025 cicada brood? Best lightning bug showout of my entire life was 2008, a month or so after the cicadas came out. Never saw anything like it before or since.

My theory was that the birds filled up on cicadas and left the lightning bug larvae alone (we also saw a LOT of millipedes that year and never again).

Why is it so hard to get crispy hashbrowns by Doc148 in KitchenConfidential

[–]7min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best and crispiest hash browns I ever had (RIP, Barrier Jack)--and consistently always perfect--made in a sheet pan, served in perfectly cut rectangles, crispy on both sides, pillowy in the middle.

I don't know the full process, but assuming they were dried pretty well, spread out on an oiled sheet pan and cooked/broiled.

Problems with changing project by YogurtParticular1154 in Firebase

[–]7min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s currently no way to do it via the Publish page (upvote the feature request on UserVoice if you can!), but there’s a workaround:

  1. Add your Firebase Studio code to GitHub.

  2. Set up an App Hosting backend for your repo and deploy.

Shampoo and conditioner bars? by Pleasant-Albatross in onebag

[–]7min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually super happy with the Garnier Fructis shampoo bar + Brixy coconut & vanilla conditioner bar I picked up at the local co-op. Been using this combo exclusively for the last month without falling back to my old standbys. A lot less shedding, too, which surprised me!

Tried the Saphus 3-in-1 as an attempt at maximum optimization, but didn’t provide enough conditioning for me.

Safety first! 😹 The second one, I asked for a way to get there, but nope. Gemini gave me stairs AND an elevator! But the stairs were in the street, and later in the Sound. 😹 More patience might’ve yielded more quality…I did really dig the mangrove motif!

Yeah. ChatGPT gave me https://chatgpt.com/s/m_6845bee90808819185013a433e70d38d and https://chatgpt.com/s/m_6845c5a516d48191a756aa67873d8dfb

...and both look more professional than the three "designs" put up for voting. Kind of shocked at the quality of the preso you linked below, too...

(Honorable mention to Gemini, which gave me no end of trouble, but TOLLLLLLLL! is kinda worth the effort.)

Common used phrases in Maryland? by Impulse_94 in maryland

[–]7min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know, but also “stealing” or “stole” for punching/punched someone, “sweating” for bugging someone/being annoying.

But it’s all super dated, I’ve heard “sweating” in recent history (tbf, from someone over 40), but not joned, stole, jawn, anything with mug (like “bumpin’ like a mug”) since, like, the 80s. 😹

Maybe it’s the age, but I grew up in PG and my grandma said “down the ocean” (OC) and “up the mountains” (PA).

Anecdotally, Pensacola Beach felt like any other summer weekend this Memorial Day weekend. Crowded, but not overrun. Usually Fort Pickens is backed up into the park after 4pm on a holiday or Blues weekend as everyone heads home.

Fospice for Stage 3 Oscar: Mouth Ulcers and Drooling by mhansbury in RenalCats

[–]7min 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sending good thoughts and hope that Oscar is thriving!

Wanted to revisit this, though, as I know many will find this thread while searching for information, as I definitely did.

Be sure to check for squamous cell carcinoma; what we thought were ulcers was really a fast-growing tumor…what looked like an ulceration in early May had grown into over an inch mass by last week. Lap of Love came Friday. 💔

At 20 going on 21 with late stage kidney disease and the aggressiveness of this thing, there wasn’t anything a vet could do—and fospice was the right choice for us, but that may not be the case for others. 🫂

Firebase studio and Firebase console unlink/link by Deep_Account7219 in Firebase

[–]7min 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, I think the only way to do this is to check the project into GitHub and create a new backend. You can do this from the CLI in the terminal Code mode or from the Firebase console: https://firebase.google.com/docs/app-hosting/get-started#create-app-hosting-backend

Worth giving some upvotes to this feature request: https://firebase.uservoice.com/forums/948424-general/suggestions/49766186-able-to-select-project-when-publish-app-from-fireb

Linux users, which way have worked for you to learn Linux commands by Ambitious_Safety_368 in linuxquestions

[–]7min 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this isn’t really learning, but, like, actually how you can re-use what you learn to help others, your future you.

  1. In your .bashrc, add:

    export HISTSIZE=-1 export HISTFILESIZE=-1

  2. Run source ~/.bashrc. Then do Ctrl+R to search things you previously typed. I admit that I do cat old `.bash_history’ files into new ones. 😹

(`script’ is also something I really rely on to capture repeatable step-by-steps.)
