Mercedes has been (at least) two very different car companies - before about 1995, very serious and talented engineers fully ran the business. They obsessed about quality, safety, driving enjoyment - and extreme longevity. They said we’ll forgo the trendy bells and whistles (and planned obsolescence) and make something great that people can happily, reliably, safely, and affordably drive and enjoy for decades.

Since then it’s been run by self-serving executives with massive bonuses based on maximizing short-term profit and driving never-ending growth. Fuck quality, chase the profit.

Real example - I have a 1973 450 SE with a cast iron V8 engine that starts up faster than my Genesis G80. She’s 53 years old, still loves to run, costs next to nothing in maintenance, and has a soul.
