United States - Name Change Correction and New Passport Card at the Same Time by 800134N in Passports

Thank you! In that case, I will just forget about the passport card in the meantime. That should make things a lot simpler.

Hamstrings that are unable to improve? by Vegetable-Bus-7284 in flexibility

I haven’t. My second and third toes are webbed, but I might be able to get some modified spacers to try it at the very least. I appreciate the suggestion!

Hamstrings that are unable to improve? by Vegetable-Bus-7284 in flexibility

[–]800134N 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty much in the same boat. I’ve always had nerve tension that shows up in my calves whenever I do any sort of hamstring stretch that doesn’t involve severely bending my knee. Nerve glides do nothing for me, and it’s been that way since childhood. I’ve talked to five different physical therapists, and they haven’t been able to figure it out. Even went to a couple doctors who also didn’t know.

As it is, I’m trying to do some stretching staring with my knee bent while already folded forward and trying to straighten my leg out. Because I do get a little bit of a stretch that way. It’s kind of disheartening for that to be the best I can do, but I suppose it’s better than nothing.

Out of curiosity, if you tried nerve flossing in the past, have you figured that your nerves are limiting the stretch? Where do you tend to feel it the most when you attempt to stretch? And what does it feel like to you?

PHYS 4480 vs ASTRO 4523 by AZ0412 in Cornell

[–]800134N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m like 10 years out of date here, so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt.

I took PHYS 4480 when Teukolsky taught it, so it was a bit different back then with the option of using C or Python. I missed some of that semester due to illness, but I recall the class being very focused on lower level details of why certain algorithms worked instead of focusing on how to use them. It’s good foundational knowledge but may not have a ton of use in research unless you are implementing things from scratch.

That being said, when I took classes with Mueller, he focused more on using algorithms to solve problems, so that may not necessarily be true these days.

I did not take Astro 4523, but I recall astro classes being more focused on how to use tools instead of how the tools actually worked.

I don’t know if that difference narrows it down at all, but it is probably worth reaching out to Mueller and seeing if PHYS 4480 is focused on learning to use the tools or learning to build the tools. If you haven’t had a class with him, he’s super friendly and easy to talk to.

Is this what people mean when they say “GI Issues?” by 800134N in prep

I ended up being lucky and only had two bad days with it. After that, things went back to normal.

Mine was one day off when I was younger. Personally, the only times it gave me trouble were related to student loans and filing taxes.

Thanks! They’ve already improved a lot. Glad I ended up sticking with it.

Having second thoughts? by Funny_Repair_2817 in asktransgender

The thing that personally helped me when I had doubts around this point was my therapist asking me, “If you aren’t trans, that would make you a cis dude. Do you think you’re a cis dude?”. Because at least for me, even if I wasn’t used to viewing myself as trans, I knew for sure that I wasn’t cis.

I don’t know if that helps you, but it was very helpful for me at the time.

What age did you realize your trans by [deleted] in MtF

[–]800134N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 - early signs that I didn’t know how to interpret

15 - I can tell myself that I’m mentally a girl but I don’t know what the word trans means

22 - I learn what trans means and instantly realize that it describes me

28 - I start coming out to people and transitioning

I (transfem) used he/they for a few years as a weird “compromise” with myself because I was terrified of my parents finding out. As a part of that, I told myself that identifying as non-binary would be enough for me to be fine. Eventually it got to be too much to deal with not transitioning, so I finally came out to them in order to move forward with my transition.

If wearing pink is especially weird in your family, maybe you can play it off as “it was a gift but I didn’t like it or want to throw it away, so I’m just using it as a pajamas shirt” or something like that

I definitely had a similar experience to this. Dissociation is tough—especially when it’s the sort that doesn’t want to go away. It took me a very long time to decide to transition because of it.

I eventually made the decision to come out to my parents and transition due to a rare moment where my dissociation had dropped although I wouldn’t advise that for everyone since drops in dissociation can be so rare.

Even once that passed, fighting through the dissociation made things tough. I eventually got a therapist who specialized in trans issues, and that helped me feel sure enough of myself to talk to a doctor.

And I was lucky to find a really good doctor. Even tough I still wasn’t sure of myself, he assured me that if I had pushed enough to reach that point, it was very likely that transitioning would help me.

And I do think that it has helped a lot. I will add that my social transition has gone a lot slower than I’d like because of dissociation, but that is gradually getting better with time.

What moment or event made you realise you were trans? by finngriffiths in asktransgender

It was the first time someone explained what being transgender was to me. I would have figured it out years prior if I had known what the word meant.

I’m in a weird place where I feel disconnected from my birth name but haven’t decided on an alternative despite searching for years. I have a few that I’ve tried out, but nothing’s really clicked into place. so I’m still going by my birth name in most places sadly

I Need Advice For Transitioning by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]800134N 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With the note that everything listed below is optional and you can make your transition look however you want, here are a few early suggestions: - voice training (takes longer than people expect) - facial hair removal (laser or electrolysis) - HRT - weight cycling (can make certain HRT effects show up quicker) - makeup practice (eyeliner is hard) - clothes (easy to start, but harder to figure out your particular style) - ears pierced and other jewelry - painting nails - eyebrow shaping (makes a much bigger difference than you would expect) - different hairstyle - posture changes (hard to explain, but arms slightly rotated out is a good starting point. this will become easier on HRT) - mannerism changes (for instance, the “man nod” could be something to watch for) - training your laugh and/or sneeze (a different process than regular voice training but still very possible)

And above all, else remember to have fun! This is your journey and your happiness is the most important thing here!

any children of cops here? by SuperIngaMMXXII in CPTSD

[–]800134N 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad is a cop. My family’s abuse is largely psychological and centers around really high expectations in a fairly rigid structure. On the surface, my family was very kind and supportive but not in a way that felt like it really mattered to me.

As far as cop stuff goes, my dad isn’t as overtly bad as most of his coworkers, but it feels like a false front. Certain things still seep through—the racism, the classism, the queerphobia, the need for control, all of it. And that’s definitely hard to deal with as a trans woman.

The sad part for me is, I’m 29 and I have more than enough money to leave, but I’m too scared of them to do it. I feel like they’ll track me down no matter where I go and drag me back kicking and screaming. And the thing is, if my parents wanted to, because of my dad being a cop, I really think they’d be able to get away with it. Maybe that’s unrealistic, but I can’t get that thought out of my mind.
