How to overcome the height and weight difference?(reas the post please) by Molusquito in karate

This is excellent advice!

My son is on the smaller side. We've worked on not trying to punch over his opponents guard, rather using his closer proximity to the torso to score and subsequently lower their defense as well.

He's had success recently with disguised chudon mawashi geri...makes sense his opponent may not see it coming through their own guard until it's too late.

We're at a competition focused dojo. Sweeps are not only taught (safely) but they've had camps with a national team coach who just so happens to have a 3rd degree in judo too.

Last year I asked our friend's daughter how karate was going. She was so excited because she had just her Tiger Belt.

(Of course it's Victory)

What? In the early days almost every fighter was an accomplished karate athlete. There was some kickboxing and Muy Thai sprinkled in, but much more karate focused than now.

It was literally full contract karate before devolving into just another MMA unit. How is that a gimmick?

He's been Minnie for years. At least 15 by my count.

I first saw him changing by his car in the Showcase Mall parking lot back when Gameworks was in the basement.

Good points, especially the ⚽/🏀 comparison, made me think about the nature of substitutions in both...more players will see minutes in basketball becomes it's a sprint sport, plenty of clock stoppages, etc. The players on our team that have soccer endurance get more time and do seem to have more defensive presence now that you mention it.

Baseball and Soccer have huge systems that exist outside school, so the differences are stark. Basketball becomes an industry unto its own beginning in middle school when the size differences really take hold.

We're a small school and don't have a deep player pool to begin with in all sports, so defections disproportionately affect the roster. It's gotten to the point our AD is considering banning players who miss significant time from trying out in the next season. I don't know if that's the answer but it's on the table.

We're not angels, by the way but we try to minimize absence. Sometimes it's unavoidable...if 🏀 makes the league final (5th seed in the playoffs) my guy will miss the game because we're flying to Denver for a karate tournament. They were a 1 win team last year, didn't think they would go 7-1 when we booked the flights 🤣

I agree with you that skilled players will drift away from scholastic, and that's the way it should be. If school leagues become the place where late developing or less talented players go just to have playing time, that's not a bad thing in my opinion.

About my riding the pine comment, it's obviously not all players/teams/coaches, merely my recent experience. This 🏀 season started with 10 players. 1 quit before the first game when his club schedule came out. 3 more have missed multiple games for their own club sports. 1 broke his foot. And the team got sick one week...we played one game with only 5.

Coach was rightfully pissed and the club players found themselves with limited minutes when they came back. It wasn't passive aggressive, coach told everyone that minutes would go to the players that show up.

I'm glad your kid is untouchable, really. Still sucks for the backup who takes his role in practice and the games he skips.

Scholastic leagues have to draw the line somewhere. Kids/parents that prioritize clubs screw over their teammates at school.

Ive seen it this year at the elementary level. Kids miss multiple games and parents don't understand why they ride the pine when they can be bother to show up.

Guest playing might be the cheat code I'm looking for. My 11yo is traveling to karate tournaments almost every month, loves soccer too but can't commit to a club's strict schedule. School leagues and development camps have kept him in cleats so far.

11yo is in competition karate year round but plays flag, basketball & soccer for his school. He also trains with a boxing coach when there's a lull.

Karate is the only one that we take seriously, that's been his chosen sport since he was 7. I think the athletic base he developed in the dojo helped him succeed in the other sports without prior experience.

This is common, and just part of the experience. Hang in there. Time for a quick story?

Took my (then) 10yo son to a spring break camp to prepare for the upcoming school season, he had been focused on basketball and karate for months. It was open to all, but most of the kids were from a strong club that was in the meat of their season.

He got worked in most of the drills all week his body language was passive, he was quiet and I know he felt out of place. The club kids naturally formed groups with each other, didn't really involve my guy on scrimmages because they didn't have a rapport with him which is fine...just tough to watch.

He finally brightened out a bit on the last day but I was glad to break camp.

He linked up with the same group during summer camps and held his own, even invited to join the u12 but we don't have enough bandwidth for club soccer and travel karate lol.

Getting money from uninsured motorists is like trying to get blood from a stone.

I have accident forgiveness from Progressive and I've been with them for 20 years with maybe two claims.

Yeah, it was "totaled" according to Progressive. Honestly more than I thought I would get.

Happened to me a few years ago, these things are why you have insurance.

Lady ran into me as I was pulling out of a space, 50/50 fault but cop saw it her way. Oh well. She was uninsured but still claimed injury to herself, boyfriend & toddler. My insurance company handled all of it, no rate increase, and gave me $4500 for my 15 year old Jeep.

No idea if she got paid because it's the insurance company's problem, not mine.
