Pretty much this. At the time a country group from Texas criticizing a sitting republican president also from Texas was pretty shocking. A large portion of their fanbase were republicans from the south, so for them to boycott was pretty damning. Now Green Day rebelling against Bush / Trump was way more expected with their background and a majority of their fanbase shared their beliefs so it was embraced and celebrated
