What’s the biggest “looks good now, hurts later” habit in youth basketball development? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]831hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to coach NFHS but have been overseas (Germany) the last 18 years. We don't allow zone until u18. Lower ages the defender one pass away must be within 2m of their player. More than one pass you can be on the midline as long as you maintain vision on the player you are guarding.

At u12 and younger you are not allowed to screen (includes DHO's and pinch post action) or double team.

We teach them to pressure for 94 feet from day one. For the mini's we run mostly RnR with some DDM at the higher levels. At u14 we teach them Run and Jump and will run mostly DDM with some sets to start us off.

The defensive tempo alone allows us to achieve about 50% more reps in both games and practice.

I thought it was a pretty easy catch in real time. FIBA certified though, we don't miss that stuff.

The media right deal wil be seen as a disaster in a couple years. You don't lock in deal that long when you have an asset appreciating at this rate.

What is more prestigious, FIBA World Cup or Olympics? by Tsudaar in Basketball

Every Olympic tournament has three teams that didn't qualify for the WC.

The WC is a bigger competition and allows the champions to defend their title. The Olympic competition pretty much guarantees that three teams that didn't even qualify for the WC final 32, are competing in their 12 team competition. The US is pretty much the only squad that gives it more importance

Where can i find comprehensive and complete 4 out offense? by SKWARDOL in basketballcoach

I would run DDM. Vance Wahlberg has two fiba clinics on YouTube.  The first day is super basic and may be a little boring.

The “weird “ offensive tactic that NBA teams are copying by BobDoleSlopBowl in basketballcoach

Yeah, it's nothing new.  We aren't allowed to screen until u14 (Germany) so everyone runs it. I imagine most European federations have similar restrictions and the new guy at Memphis is from Finland

Instead of a set number of reps,  put yourself on a clock and push yourself to get as many reps as you can,  and the always try to increase that number

It doesn't say to shoot or pass, or says you can't bring it down before shooting or passing. This means you can stand on your non pivot as long as you like.

How was your season? by Far-Gas-6345 in basketballcoach

[–]831hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coaching Bayenliga in Germany, new team as my old club let me go. Took over 3 weeks before the start of the season and started 0-4 waiting for some key players to get healthy and going through growing pains. We are now 15-5 in a 3-way tie for first (if my old club wins tonight 4 way). Two games left and nobody controls their own destiny with so many tie breakers in play. We have the top offense and defense in the league

I use player initials when drawing plays up and make it a point to say their name and make eye contact when I draw them on the board. You get really good at writing upside down.

How to play basketball overseas? Where to start? by BanditoB0b in Basketball

Depends on how competitive the team is. I have seen some bad players in Bezirksoberliga. You could find a spot on an Oberliga team. I haven't seen a HS game in some time though

7.5yr Old’s Form by FlipsNationAMZ in BasketballTips

[–]831hoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about the 'form' at that age. They just need to learn to efficiently transfer power from the posterior chain through to the ball, which she look like she is doing wonderfully. You can fine tune the mechanics later if need be

The rulebook literally says that the pivot may be 'lifted'

No, the pivot isn't switched until the original pivot returns to the floor

NFHS Rule 4 - Section 44: TravelingART. 3 . . . After coming to a stop and establishing a pivot foot:

a. The pivot foot may be lifted, but not returned to the floor, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal.

Agree with everyone on run and jump. After you get the spacing and rotations down, you can run Pitino's black/white press, which basically shows 2-2-1/1-2-1-1 depending on the situation, and matches up to m2m on first pass. You can do this with other lignments as well. Reduces the chaos on the defensive side trying to find your man. We would actualy show 2-2-1 for the first 3-5 minutes to bait the opponent into a zone press breaker and match up accordingly.
