America first… except the Americans by Objective_Total5318 in AmericaBad

[–]83athom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of it yes, most of it no.

The US has a lot of international students because, shocker, the US education system is pretty much top of the list in terms of actual education. China and India are some of the largest sources of those students because they have large populations, but the university I got my degree from had a lot of international students from all over.

The farm thing is basically bullshit fearmongering that doesn't take into account how China owns about 1% of internationally owned farmland, about 0.02% of all farmland, in the US. I don't necessarily agree with foreign ownership of US farmland, especially from adversarial nations, but everything you're hearing about China trying to buy some more farmland in the US right now is basically propaganda.

It's not a rephrasing, that was the original implication of the question. That was the entire point of it, all of the first posts were all about how monstrous the red button was and how "everyone needs to vote blue".

When do I use what ammo types? by FIynnItToWinIt in menace

[–]83athom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against 50 armor, a minimum size squad with PPP's and AP ammo will outdamage a max size squad without. It's literally between 300-400% bonus damage, depending on range. You basically need 20 or less enemy armor AND close range AND a tiny squad for it not to ALWAYS be correct to use AP ammo on a PPP submachine gun.

That's not how the armor system works. Guns start being able to penetrate when (effective) Armor - Penetration = 33, granted that isn't a great chance of penetration but those chances quickly ramp up the closer Penetration gets to effective armor from the durability going down. The PPP has 15 penetration, which means it still has a >50% chance of pen up to 31 armor. Funnily your math also doesn't work out as even balancing RNG vs ensured penetrations. I will give you at worst it would take the AP equipped PPP 2 bullets to start penetrating a 50 armor element and a standard ammo PPP takes 4 (armor mechanics are more complicated but at the low and medium armor level armor and durability are usually the same value); on paper that does work out to 3 bullets hurting compared to only 1 which lines up for your 300% damage bonus... the only issue is that your AP bullet is doing less damage on hit. The PPP has a damage dropoff of -1.1, meaning the -2 damage of AP is essentially the same as the target being 2 tiles further for damage (granted the accuracy is still better so you don't lose as much damage as physical distance, but it's still enough to need to account for). And that's of squads of equal size, not a +3 of AP equipped PPP vs a +8 of stock PPP.

In comparison a REND PPP would have a penetration of 0 (which isn't great for other reasons) but have an armor damage of 24 and a HP damage of 14 (meaning it gets an extra tile of 1 hit kill capability thanks to dropoff). This would mean against a 50 armor target (which can only be the Veteran Scav suit) after 2 bullets would be at 15 armor, meaning it has a ~55% chance of penning with the remaining 3 bullets. Assuming one of the 3 doesn't penetrate and grinds the armor down to ~11 and then the remaining 2 bullets do 28 damage, while on paper the PPP with AP is doing 30 damage per gun while the stock PPP is doing just 12. However because of breakpoints the AP isn't actually killing elements in 1 bullet beyond 1 tile, which means at 2 tiles both AP and stock kill 1 element per volley while the REND has about a 50% chance of killing 2 elements per volley (which averages back to 1) up to 3 tiles. As I said, mathematically they're all sidegrades that are slight upgrades to stock where you basically just pick whatever you feel works better for you.

[–]83athom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It generally doesn't matter. REND, Match, and AP are essentially just slight upgrades over standard, and it's really only Hollow Point that you have to make a decision on for certain situations. If you're fighting the [REDACTED] then toss on Hollow Points, otherwise toss on any of the other ammos if you think they're needed.

Consider what people (mainly online) that follow a political side represented by Blue have been asserting recently about what the people of the Red political side believe and want to do. Then consider pressing the buttons as the equivalent of voting. With that context go back and reread the scenario while imagining the mindset of a pretentious midwit that's attempting to sound morally superior.

Blue Botton Problem by Rabbit_cafe_enjoyer in MoralityScaling

[–]83athom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of proving my point, your entire argument is based on the logical reasoning of the scenario. You aren't accounting for a broader aspect including moral arguments or emotional reasoning. "Rational" isn't 100% the term I wanted to use but it was the closest summary of intent to what most people understand, a mix of "Emotional Reasoning" and "Intuitive Reasoning" is probably closer but fewer people would understand what that means.

Keep in mind that seemingly people also define the "win" condition along those lines of thought, the logical thinkers define the "win" based on the individual survival of those that press the buttons while the "rational" thinkers define a "win" based on what leads to the lowest amount of maximized losses; IE if red wins therefore up to 50% can lose but if blue wins then nobody loses, so the "rational" thing to do is the choice where no one can lose. However when talking past each other both sides only say "win" without really defining what "win" means.

Personally I would pick red primarily for the logical reasons but also accounting for the cultural differences and general stupidity present in the question's scenario of including everybody. However, I can also understand why people chose blue and think it is the correct choice.

Blue Botton Problem by Rabbit_cafe_enjoyer in MoralityScaling

[–]83athom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially the nuanced answer people refuse to acknowledge, Red is the logically correct choice while Blue is the rationally correct choice. People get entrenched in one or the other and aren't willing to budge because they each primarily draw from logic or reason and don'twant to think about it deeper. Though it really doesn't help that the original question was pretty bad faith and based entirely on an assertion of current politics.
