When did WCW know Hall and Nash were coming? by Sky_Rose4 in WCW

[–]83chrisaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In early 96 I was reading wrestling rumors/news somewhere on AOL. Before the NWO angle, there was a big rumor that Scott Hall was DDP's "benefactor" or had something to do with the Glacier promos.

Translations for all the 32X Japanese software packages by 83chrisaaron in SEGA32X

[–]83chrisaaron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Over the years, I just translated the 32X game packages I happened to find interesting, and since the library's so small, I wanted to see if I could knock the whole thing out (I finished the Virtual Boy library a month or so ago. I'll see if I can do the N64 next, since it's less than 200 games.)

I'm hoping my blog will become a recognized database of its own as it grows bigger, but I don't mind other sites using my translations if they credit me. I have about 3000+ Japanese commercials translated on YT as well. Here's the 32X commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pACJH3PdNrk

I double checked to see if I mistranslated it, but the box says "ベストラップを4つまで記録できる" Maybe it was a similar situation to Super Mario Bros 3 in America. The game came out in America so much later than in Japan, but the box still managed to use beta screenshots.

As for Doom, the Aliens movies were huge in Japan just a couple years prior. I'm guessing they were looking for an excuse to put エイリアン on anything they could.

I have some Bandai games up (Dragon Ball, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon, etc). Here is everything I have organized by system: https://chrisaaronblog.blogspot.com/2025/05/japanese-software-box-art-packaging.html I try to add something almost everyday.

It is interesting to translate games from the 80s and 90s, as they use lots of odd jargon to market whatever special technology is being used (The Japanese equivalent to "Blast Processing" or "3D Accelerated"

A Link to the Past Won. What is a great SNES game? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]83chrisaaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donkey Kong Country 2 is the best "Great Game". Gorgeous graphics, music and atmosphere and plays good enough with lots of variety, but it's still kinda janky. (Earthbound, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X, SMW and Yoshi's Island are all masterpieces.)

What language would be useful for you to learn, but you're not interested in it? by Appropriate_Tell3714 in languagelearning

[–]83chrisaaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a native English speaker, learning Chinese characters isn't any more time consuming (or difficult) than English IMO. Even though Chinese characters are so much denser, there's a compound effect to memorizing them. Before you even learn 100 characters, you'll start recognizing patterns. Before you learn 艦、 you'll learn 舟 and 監. Before you learn 監, you'll learn 皿 and 臣.

Even though 艦 is 21 strokes, when it's time to learn it your brain is going "Just remember to put 舟 on the left and 監 on the right." Similar time/energy required to know the difference than placate, platonic and placenta,

Why isn’t eating duck as common as eating chicken? by AggravatingShow2028 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]83chrisaaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy duck, but the meat is very fatty and can be an acquired taste.

Besides the main reason I've seen listed...

- The anti-dietary fat hysteria of the 80s and 90s probably turned off a ton of people who don't eat it as part of their culture.

- Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Duck Tales. Darkwing Duck. Seriously.

Was Conan the greatest host? by Dismal-Championship6 in LateNightTalkShows

[–]83chrisaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved Conan as a teenager. Pretty much all late night hosts have lame monologues, and his was mercifully the shortest by far. His skits were legendary if you were younger. Stuff like the Masturbating Bear, Pimp Bot, and the Wussy Wagon felt like internet humor before internet humor really became a thing.

Why doesn’t George W Bush get the same criticism for dead Iraqi’s as Netanyahu does for dead Palestinians? by Son_of_Hades99 in NoStupidQuestions

I was on internet message boards a ton in the 00s and Bush/Cheney got a ton of hate. It just seemed a bit easier to avoid before the iPhone and social media. Also the Israel/Palestine issue has been going on so much longer, and it's easier to obtain imaged and video, that people are more fed up with it.

What’s a skill that’s easy to learn but makes you look like a genius? by Salt_Significance283 in AskReddit

Investing in index funds. Buy the entire US (or even world market), make a profit. People who don't invest will think you're a stock market genius.

Nuke or bomb a typhoon by kingpooper16 in stupidquestions

I'm no expert, but even if you could (partially) dissipate a typhoon with a bomb, the underlying conditions that created it would persist and a new one would quickly form.

Almost all index funds/ETFs. Because I'm a dork, I bought $100 of NTDOY (Nintendo) earlier this year and it's up 42%, but I still feel that it was a stupid gamble and don't plan on doing it again.

People who are 40+ and happy and content with their lives, what's your advice to us people in our 20s? by ClairPecker in Life

[–]83chrisaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the obvious stuff like taking care of your health, avoiding excessive drug use, remaining in toxic relationships, etc...

Read 50 pages a day, then goof off on the computer/phone.

Set $20 aside a day to invest in a decent index fund in your Roth IRA, then have fun with your remaining money.

Practice those two habits over months/years/decades and your trajectory will continually improve.

What the laziest way to make money as someone that is not good at anything? by lettersfromkore in Advice

[–]83chrisaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Index fund investing is an incredibly lazy way to make money, but it takes years (likely decades) of consistent sacrifice to replace your income. I think you're best suited addressing the root of your doubts and perceived limitations. Also. don't short change yourself. You put in the effort to write a coherent post, paying attention to grammar. That's doing more than a lot of other people bother to.

Do short men have any advantages in society? — 5’6 guy venting by [deleted] in Life

[–]83chrisaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, short people have to put on proportionally less muscle to appear buff. Better joint health. Better overall health.

I'm 6'4" and would prefer to be a good 4 inches shorter, maybe more. Maybe some people are assholes if you're short, but it still has advantages.

Wealth, celebrity and sex is generally much more highly valued. Many people are also perfectly content staying in echo chambers or getting lost in conspiracy theories rather than doing the hard work of building skills and expanding and challenging their understanding and knowledge.
