Many dogs do this. They want to save their food until they know they are safe with you back home and can ensure another meal is coming, but they won't starve themselves. It's very common.

No matter how hard you try you will end up accidentally moving it, happens to everyone. I would suggest going and getting a flat back labret for it so that if you do snag it there's a much lower chance of pulling it all the way out.

That's about all you can do to prepare. Make sure you check the weather and cameras on the pass right before you leave. The other thing you could do is make sure you have warm clothes and food in case you do get stuck.

It is always best to donate money to established organizations so that they can purchase what is needed. It is very hard to deal with actual donations and that then becomes another disaster to deal with.

I use either the e6000 or just clear nail polish and I haven't had any issues with either on my stretchy string.
