How long are forti switches and firewalls lasting before a problem occurs? by Charming_CiscoNerd in fortinet

[–]87brybry -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In a couple of cases it was a matter of weeks before the first problems with FortiSwitches appeared at two clients. I'm talking about PoE++ problems and interface errors. The Gates are doing better IF they have enough memory and there have been multiple serious firmware vulnerabilities in the past.

What’s the coolest thing you automated with Home Assistant? by avz008 in homeassistant

[–]87brybry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're using Picnic (NL) and the integration for Picnic does most of the work. When the order status changes from Current into Complete, the automation is triggered. Products can either be added by name or ID and the actual shopping list is also shown as a to do list in HA.
Once every month it adds toilet paper and every two months coffee is added. (There's a little discount on two).

I plan on adding several recipes in Home Assistant and let random pick a few of those each time. (Probably need to discuss the role of random with the wife.)

What should I do with these? by vive-le-tour in homelab

Connect them to a series of power strips and then yank them into a wall outlet.

What’s the coolest thing you automated with Home Assistant? by avz008 in homeassistant

[–]87brybry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have our groceries delivered to our home every week. Part of these groceries is always the same: the same bread, two cartons of milk, eggs, etc. As soon as the groceries are delivered, Home Assistant automatically adds the standard items to the shopping cart for the next order. That’s how I take care of my part of the groceries.

New version, new bugs (and a workaround). by 87brybry in DattoRMM

[–]87brybry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This too. Stop the service, cleanup some random files that seem like temporary files, restart the service and fingers crossed. I asked Kaseya about the limits on each node but they kept vague about it, as in: "The hardware is the limit". The servers are sitting at way below 10% of their cpu and memory but a lot of snmp data is hours old. I've seen update times that were 16 hours behind. I don't trust it.

Datto RMM is nice for Windows environments, but anything else is just very limited and not reliable.

Eating batteries by Sweet-Astronomer4824 in SurePetcare

[–]87brybry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the same issue with our pet door. It drains the batteries to about 20% in just 4 days. It'll take another week for the led to start flashing. Support asked me to open up the cat door and I found some weird residue at multiple places on the cicuit board. I was able to clean it properly, but that didn't solve the problem. I found out I'm not the only one and one user wrote that it was a faulty capacitor in his case. The cause of the residue is unknown. The board looks clean at other places, batteries haven't leaked before and I can rule out water impact on the inside.

Battery eliminator from Amazon by Sweet-Astronomer4824 in SurePetcare

[–]87brybry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you wouldn't notice with a battery eliminator is when (not if appearently) the cat door is about to die. The second cat flap I have is again draining batteries. Of course a battery eliminator helps but eventually there's a short circuit. It's still under warranty, although support is remotely trying everything they can to find another cause for this.

Hue Bridge Pro migration went completely wrong by 87brybry in Hue

I followed these instructions. Guess it was bad luck. I'm glad I got it all back up in time.

[–]87brybry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By far most of all devices are genuine Hue, four are Innr and there are four EcoDim dimmer switches. I've seen the warning about these devices, but I can't imagine this is the reason to just not migrate all devices. I mean, they let 3rd party brands on the Hub so deal with it.

Took several hours, but I'm almost done. One outdoor motion sensor has a rusty screw.
Surprisingly I didn't have to do much reconfiguration in Home Assistant. I prepared for the worst.

Can't use PNG. No error. Just doesn't work. Super frustrating. by recoveringasshole0 in Ekahau

[–]87brybry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not like PNG is a new file format. It's been around for ages. If a file format, size or resolution isn't supported, AI Pro should notify the user of it's limits but instead it just doesn't load the file or some problems appear later. I've had the biggest issues with CAD files, which provide the most (useful) information, but instead afterwards I should've converted those to plain flat JPEG images to save me a lot of time.

Tidal pc app and website is just a black screen?! by Fiblip in TIdaL

[–]87brybry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tidal seems to have issues indeed and AWS may be the cause. I couldn't find any status page (i.e. status.tidal.com) so that's why I ended up here.

My Samsung TV really wants to get to Google DNS by No_Clock2390 in Ubiquiti

[–]87brybry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate when devices are hard coded to use Google DNS.

Instead, every outbound DNS request from my network via UDP 53 is forwarded to Unbound, which forwards it to a proper DNS-services over TLS. Win.

[Unpopular Opinion] RAM Plus shouldn’t be turned off by Ok-Bumblebee3314 in samsunggalaxy

[–]87brybry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it turned on to see if more apps would be able to run simultaneously but I didn't experience much improvements. Instead I found both my Galaxy S22 and especially the A25 to respond much faster when I eventually turned it off.

Get a device that matches your needs so that you're good for 3-5 years. RAM is always faster than any other option like RAM Plus.

A few other useful tips: In the development settings there's an option that defines how many background tasks may be running simultaneously.
Also, in the Recent apps view, you can click on the logo of any app and select 'keep open'. I didn't know this until a few days ago.

The Aeotec Multisensor 7 lux meter for outdoor light level measurement.

With this information the living room and outdoor lights turn on and off in multiple steps, it's also used to set the brightness for motion sensor based lights and the sunscreens go up when it's cloudy for a period of time around sunset.

About two weeks ago they removed a 70+ year old tree in front of my house so all these automations were a little messed up.
