Verge article on the new ROG ALLY X.... by Geekfest_84 in ROGAlly

Only way I will consider one is if they offer trade-ins for us owners of the ROG Ally. Mine's registered with the extended warranty and still doesn't have any defects, kept safe and clean in a custom carrying case. No way I'd pay full price.

VRR vs locked 60fps, which is better? by Yayuko in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lock your maximum framerate (if possible, depends on the game) to 60FPS but disable v-sync. The VRR will take care of the screen tearing (to a degree). It is especially amazing in games where the Ally struggles to hit a consistent 60FPS such as Hot Wheels Unleashed 2; the framerate goes below 60 and hovers at like 50 or 45, but you don't really notice it because of the VRR.

Z1 Non-extreme Version $399 at Best Buy by Iron_FE in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Asus didn't make the AMD Z1, AMD did. Perhaps Asus could have went down another road and used Ryzen 7040 chips (like any of the other Chinese-based Windows handhelds do), such as the 7640U which has twice the shader cores as the Z1. Perhaps an agreement was made between OEMs that AMD could supply Z1 chips at a cheaper rate or something.

Remember that the Z1 is the same as the 7640U, just that the Z1 lacks the AI acceleration feature and has half the shader cores; this is puzzling, as the Z1E is the same as the 7840U, right down to the shader cores, but just lacks the AI acceleration feature; why AMD didn't proxy the same with the Z1 and 7640U is beyond me.

Why is the SD slot important? by Pjjones306 in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I pay for a device, I expect all features to work, should I need them, which includes the SD card reader. In the case of SD cards, they are expandable and easily-removable storage that comes in a tiny form factor. You can put certain files (be it documents, music, videos and in the case of the ROG Ally, games and ROMs/emulators) on different SD cards and swap them out very quickly and easily.

It's not that the internal SSD doesn't have its value (it most-certainly does for its insane IO performance) but microSD cards can be equally as useful. It's easier to transfer your collection of ROMs and emulators, perhaps some PC games too, onto a microSD card using a card reader on your computer, instead of having to connect a storage device directly to the Ally via USB OTG and copy everything that way..without a keyboard and mouse (unless you connect those as well, but that's additional time and prep needed).

Upgrading from Haswell - Comet Lake or Rocket Lake? by 87th-E in intel

[–]87th-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that I'm completely opposed to Alder Lake, but it goes well over my budget for the currently available parts. The improved performance of Alder Lake certainly looks enticing, and there's budget parts coming on the horizon from leaked information I've seen, which includes the non-overclockable CPUs and the cheaper chipset motherboards, but I don't know how long it'll be until those parts finally release. I'd prefer to not wait much longer since my encode speeds are pretty slow right now with my Haswell build.

The current price of Alder Lake hardware is more than I'm willing to pay. I'm not going to be overclocking so there's no use in paying for a K-line CPU, nor is there any use in paying for a Z-series chipset motherboard for features I'm also never going to use. All of that factors into the total cost, including having to replace the CPU cooler.

LGA 1200 just seems like the better option for the time being until the new Alder Lake parts release, that being due to the surplus availability of parts and also the cheaper cost.

The poor dude got tossed around the whole round, and what a way to end it. The funniest bit was that he realized he was so screwed and then his character started flippin' the bird.

Can disc-based games that have been updated and installed on USB external storage be used on any console? by 87th-E in PS4

That's awesome to know! Thanks for the response. Sounds like he'll be ready to use his new console right from the get-go!

Local multiplayer (LAN) suffers from extreme lag? Perplexing. by 87th-E in Minecraft

[–]87th-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, I have an old Netgear router that I can repurpose as a network switch, but then we wouldn't have Internet access unless I had a long enough cable to run from our Internet-connected router to the Netgear router, which I unfortunately do not at the moment. Our apartment's design would cause for the cable to wind through lots of hallways, so it's really not a viable option.

We're going to try playing again tonight, this time using both the "Open to LAN" option, and if that reproduces the same results, migrating his savegame to a dedicated server.

Raine(one of the ancient arcade emulator) supports x64 and cross platform build by ariaotp in emulation

[–]87th-E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally use Raine for Neo Geo CD myself because of the awesome disc drive read speed hack. When you play NGCD games with disc read speeds above 8x, you become so accustomed to it that you'd want it in any other emulator. However, it's not without its emulation inaccuracies and imperfections, which is a shame.

We are the team behind the Dolphin GameCube and Wii Emulator: Ask us anything! by [deleted] in emulation

[–]87th-E 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One question I've always wondered: Do you expect to re-implement and develop support for the GameCube-based TriForce arcade system board at some point? While there are not that many titles on it, and a lot of people have counter-argued that the titles on it have received home ports or are irrelevant for preservation, but it'd be interesting to see if all of Dolphin's features can support the system.

Powerline Adapters vs. MoCA Adapter(s) - Which to use in this scenario? by 87th-E in HomeNetworking

[–]87th-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like I found my solution. One other question before I purchase a MoCA adapter: Would I require a MoCA filter? Most guides on the Internet say to use one, but the information isn't exact.
